Canada can lay claim to many wonderful things -- the world's highest tides (Bay of Fundy), the world's cleanest air (Whitehorse), the world's largest goose (Wawa). But one thing we do have in Quebec that really surprises everyone who hears it is that our country also possesses the world's most beautiful cow -- Rose!
Found on a dairy farm in Montmagny, Quebec, Rose has twice won the World's Most Beautiful Cow competition -- the only cow in history to have ever done this! It's no easy feat at she was competing with other beautiful cows from all over the world and her lines, bones and venation have to be almost perfect. But Rose beat all other comers to take home the title, and she did it twice. Way to go Rose!
But all the praise cannot go to Rose alone. Her owner Pierre Boulet needs to take some of the credit for raising such beautiful cows. Not only does he have the wonderful two-time champion Rose, but he also has many other cows who have won national and international awards. If you don't believe us travel to his farm to check out his trophy room; it's jammed with ribbons, medals, plaques, trophies, magazine covers and many other awards.
There is a science to raising a beautiful cow and Pierre has perfected it. He's a proud farmer who loves the thrill and satisfaction that comes with breeding the best. Even though he's a quiet, modest man he has a competitive fire that burns bright in his soul. Speak to him about his cows and you'll notice it right away.
He's a great Quebecer and a great Canadian. Congratulations Pierre and Rose. Best of luck in the next competition!

ICE CANOE RACE at Quebec City Carnival (le Grand Défi des Glaces)
Cold, ice and frigid waters? These are things most people avoid; however, at Quebec City Carnival the legendary ice canoe race is what many consider to be the main event. Courageous teams brave the elements to compete against each other along the St. Lawrence River. Having had the opportunity to try ice canoeing with Audrey, we both have absolutely mad respect for the athletic prowess and sheer bravery of the participants. There are not many things I've tried before that have scared me quite like being out on the river dodging massive slabs of ice. The skill of the participants to navigate the waters is truly impressive.

In terms of the event, crews of five athletes push their canoe across giant slabs of ice and row in waters featuring tides of over 15 feet and ice blocks weighing several tonnes. If it sounds like madness let me assure you - it is!
For maximum traction on the ice, athletes wear special shoes featuring bolts screwed to the bottom. Fiberglass canoes are a minimum 250 pounds ranging in length from 6 to 8.5 meters. Considering ice canoeing once featured wooden canoes merely meant for transportation, the sport has truly evolved over the years!
The Association des Coureurs en Canot à Glace du Québec (ACCGQ) was formed in 1984 to organise and standardise races. Six races are accredited by the ACCGQ: La Grande Traversée Casino de Charlevoix, La Course en canot du Carnaval, La course de la banquise de Portneuf, Trois-Rivières Extrême, le Défi Canot à Glace Montréal, and le Grand Défi des Glaces. The latter is the biggest event. It is run during the Quebec Winter Carnival, at Quebec City every February.

One of the most exciting events of Quebec's Winter Carnival was the ice canoe race.
This event is exactly what it sounds like. Teams hit the frigid waters of the Saint Lawrence river with their canoes and race through a mix of ice, slush and water.
Originally, a means of winter transport, ice canoeing has become a sport for the bold and brave. Having had the chance to try this ourselves we had some serious respect for the teams competing.
Here is a look at this legendary event.

Genevieve Parent is a lucky woman. Her office is an 18th century castle perched royally on the banks of the St Lawrence River in downtown Quebec City and one of her work colleagues is a big, jolly Burmese dog who welcomes guests with a wag of his shaggy tail. Her office?... It's the magnificent Chateau Frontenac, one of Canada's most beloved and world famous hotels and one of the most photographed icons in the world.
We showed up in the historic Quebec City on a sunny afternoon and walked past the calashes, fountains and flags into the lobby of the hotel. The opulent lobby is an immediate indication of what a guest can expect to find throughout the rest of the hotel. Originally built in 1893, as a renaissance chateau, it took on its current look of a medieval castle in 1924 when they added the main tower. Gorgeous from inside or out, in summer or winter, up close or from afar the Chateau Frontenac is a mecca for Canadians and tourists alike to come for a walk around, a meal in the dining room or a stay in one of the gorgeous rooms over-looking the historic city or the St. Lawrence River.
Genevieve gave us a tour of the hotel and we 'oohed' and 'awed' at the grandeur, the history and architectural splendor. The décor of the hotel's interior brings you right back to eighteenth century France and the hotel's view of the Saint Lawrence River, alone, is worth the trip. If you ever get the opportunity to visit glorious Quebec City, be sure to drop by the Chateau for a visit.

The Battle That Changed the History of North America
Now it sits as a quiet green space in the middle of the city where children play, people walk their dogs and couples stroll hand in hand. But turn back the clocks to September 13th, 1759 and it was the scene of a quick and deadly battle that changed the history of North America -- the Battle of the Plains of Abraham or Première Bataille de Québec. It was fought between the British and the French Army and it is the reason why Canada proudly includes the province of Quebec and it's French culture and language.
It was a gorgeous sunny afternoon when we met up with our Parks Canada animator in the middle of the green expanse of grass outside the walls of Quebec City. The man was dressed as a French soldier and I was dressed as his nemesis, a British soldier. Luckily they were only costumes we were wearing and we could be friends and not foe. He excitedly recreated the battle for us and explained all the details of that fatal morning. It was easy for us to picture it all as he recounted the critical point in Canadian history and we were riveted by his tale.
After he finished his tale he stood still and silent, and smiled proudly. We clapped at his wonderful story. A little while later as we parted company and continued on our journey we had learned something new and appreciated the important history lesson about our great nation. We gave our French comrade a hardy hug and continued on our way more knowledgeable about our country and grateful for our Quebecois culture.

The Château de Grouchy is a castle located in Osny, in the Val-d'Oise department, thirty kilometers northwest of Paris.
The castle owes its name to the last private owner, the Marquis Jean de Grouchy, great-grandson of the Marshal of the Empire, Emmanuel de Grouchy. Listed as a Site in 1945, then in the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments in 1990, the castle, in its current state, dates from the end of the 18th century. Commissioned by Count Charles de Lameth, in the neoclassical style, it is the work of architect Jacques-Pierre Gisors.
The Château de Grouchy is gradually being restored with the financial participation of numerous patrons and public partners. It becomes the seat of the municipal administrative services (1989), but also a cultural center which regularly hosts concerts, conferences, exhibitions and a permanent gallery.
Some outbuildings have been rehabilitated in order to highlight the existing heritage:
➣ former stables have housed the Departmental Museum of Firefighters since 1999,
➣ since 2003, the graineterie has housed the Municipal School of Music and,
➣ since 2006, offices have been installed in the orangery.
The users of the town hall and the park of Grouchy can thus discover and reappropriate all the typical elements of a landscaped park of the XIXth century: French garden, dovecote, terraces, statues, temple of love, vegetable garden, icehouse, pond, grid of honour…
