Places to see in ( Prato - Italy )

Places to see in ( Prato - Italy )

Prato sits in the heart of Tuscany, near some of the most famous of the world's cities of art: Florence, Lucca, Pisa, Siena. It is the second-largest city in the Region, as well as the third in Central Italy for number of inhabitants. The city's roots lie in the realms of art and nature, even if its economy - and that of the Province - was historically founded on the textile sector. Such a history is still alive and kicking, spurring on its growth beyond the riches it created; the area remains particularly rich in its values of hospitality, and in its cultural diversity.

The city of Prato, internationally renowned for the textile production that has its roots in a time-honored tradition, gather the evolution phases of this activity together in a museum. It is a journey through the historical memories and world of textiles. The terrain is rather varied, offering historic-artistic attraction of great significance along an itinerary in discovery of the treasures of the Etruscan, Medieval, and contemporary ages.
The Province of Prato is an authentic discovery of unexpected treasures. In a province primarily known for its important textile districts, it is less-known that it preserves historic works of beauty, where traditions and a prized cuisine blend with the beautiful scenery to create a dynamic that is fresh, modern and new. The Province comprises the Comunes of Cantagallo, Carmignano, Montemurlo, Poggio a Caiano, Vaiano and Vernio.

Piazza del Comune is the original nucleus of Prato, a crossroad of two Medieval streets. It hosts the 13th-century Palazzo Comunale and the medieval Palazzo Pretorio, which is characterized by red bricks and is the home of the civic museum that will open again on March 22nd after a long period of closure due to restoration. In the middle of the square, there is a statue of Prato's famous merchant, Francesco Datini. You'll also see a fountain: it's copy of the Fontana del Bacchino (Little Bacchus), the original of which is inside the Palazzo Comunale.

Piazza del Duomo is just few steps from Piazza del Comune. The main attraction here is the Cathedral of Santo Stefano, a jewel of Romanesque Gothic architecture, which featuresAndrea della Robbia's sculptured relief doorway and Donatello's pulpit. Inside, you'll find frescoes by Paolo Uccello, Filippo Lippi and Agnolo Gaddi. On September 8, each year, this is where the Display of the Sacred Belt of the Madonna takes place. It is one of the main celebrations in Prato.

San Domenico church is easy to reach from Piazza del Duomo, by take Via Convenevole. San Domenico is a refined Gothic structure in stone and brick. Passing through the cloister, you'll see the Museo di Pittura Murale. Palazzo Datini is another point of interest because because it is a rare example of a medieval frescoed residence. It was built in 1383 for the merchant Francesco Datini, and, in 1409, housed Pope Alexander V.

In Piazza San Francesco stands the church of the same name, which features a beautiful green and white marble façade. It houses a funerary monument of Geminiano Inghirami and frescoes by Niccolò Gerini in the Migliorati Chapel. Piazza delle Carceri is the home of the Emperor's Castle, erected by Frederick II and built between 1237 and 1247 by Riccardo da Lentini. Here, you'll also find the Basilica of S. Maria delle Carceri, which was commissioned by Lorenzo de' Medici to Giuliano da San Gallo. It features works by Andrea della Robbia, Bernardo Buontalenti and stained glass windows by Domenico Ghirlandaio.

The Cassero Medievale is a medieval bridge house that has a super-elevated fortified walk, accessible from Viale Piave, just in front of the Eastern Gate of the Emperor's Castle. Nearby, you'll find the Museo del Tessuto, the only museum of its kind in Italy. In Piazza San Marco, there is the Square Form with Cut, a white marble sculpture by Henry Moore, which was donated to the City of Prato in 1974. Outside the walls, there is a main attraction you cannot miss: the Centro per l'arte Contemporanea Luigi Pecci, located in Viale della Repubblica. It is not just an exhibition space but alsoa place for international research on contemporary art and textile technology.

Montemurlo - Javello

Places to see in ( Siena - Italy ) Casa di Santa Caterina

Places to see in ( Siena - Italy ) Casa di Santa Caterina

The sanctuary of Santa Caterina is located in Siena on the Costa di Sant'Antonio. The sanctuary incorporates the ancient home of the Benincasa, birthplace of St. Catherine and is divided into various porticoes, loggias, churches and oratories. The area of the Conca di Vallechiara , rich in water conveyed to Fontebranda , was inhabited by many wool workers, who had their homes, laboratories and dyers here. Among these there was also the father of the future Saint Catherine , Jacopo Benincasa. The Sienese municipality bought the house of the saint (which belonged to the Wool Guild) and other annexed buildings to build a sanctuary immediately after Catherine's canonization, in 1461. In 1464 the transformations began.

The house of the saint still faces the alley of the Tiratoio, and is recognizable by the stone Renaissance portal with the inscription Sponsae Kristi Catherine Domus and for the overhead gallery, with terracotta columns. The complex is accessed by the neo-Renaissance portico of the Italian Municipalities, commissioned by the Archbishop of Siena Mario Toccabelli to celebrate the proclamation of St. Catherine to Patron of Italy by Pope Pius XII in 1939 , a proclamation demanded loudly by the Archbishop same (the event is remembered by a plaque).

The portico was begun in 1941 , the year in which every municipality of Italy contributed to the costs of its construction with a symbolic sum equivalent to the cost of a brick. From this curious fact derives the name of the portico. The works were immediately interrupted due to the war, and were only completed in 1947. The portico also shows the busts of the various popes who recognized the sanctity and importance of St. Catherine in the history of the church. These include Pius II , who proclaimed her saint in 1461 , Pope Pius XII , who proclaimed her the patron saint of Italy, Paul VI , who named her Doctor of the Church in 1970 , and John Paul II , who proclaimed her the patron saint of Europe in 1999 . The portico also includes a Renaissance well , designed perhaps by Baldassarre Peruzzi in the first half of the sixteenth century.

You then enter two other loggias , of which the first one, more ancient, was erected in 1530 - 1550 by Giovan Battista Pelori , student of the most famous Baldassarre Peruzzi. The second loggia is modern and has a stucco statue of large dimensions, depicting Saint Catherine and designed as a model of the statue on the fortress.

Places to see in ( Siena - Italy ) Basilica di San Domenico

Places to see in ( Siena - Italy ) Basilica di San Domenico

The Basilica of San Domenico, also known as Basilica Cateriniana, is a basilica church in Siena, Tuscany, Italy, one of the most important in the city. The church was begun in 1226-1265, but was enlarged in the 14th century resulting in the Gothic appearance it has now. However, aspects of the Gothic structure were subsequently destroyed by fires in 1443, 1456 and 1531, and further damage later resulted from military occupation (1548-1552).

It is a large edifice built, like many contemporary edifices of the mendicant orders, in bricks, with a lofty bell tower on the left (this was reduced in height after an earthquake in 1798). The interior is on the Egyptian cross plan with a huge nave covered by trusses and with a transept featuring high chapels. The church contains several relics of St. Catherine of Siena, whose family house is nearby.

Cappella delle Volte is an old praying place of Dominican nuns, connected to numerous episode of sanctity of Catherine of Siena's life. It houses the Canonization of St. Catherine by Mattia Preti, flanked by two 1602 paintings by Crescenzio Gambarelli. Other works by the latter are also present. The main wall has a portrait of St. Catherine.

the left wall of the nave has a Madonna with Child by Francesco di Vannuccio, framed by an Eternal with Saint by Il Sodoma and by a predella with fifteen Stories of the New Testament by Antonio Magagna. Rutilio Manetti painted a St. Anthony Abbot's Exorcism, Sebastiano Folli a St. Catherine of Alexandria and Francesco Vanni a St. Hyacinth Saving a Statue of the Madonna from a Fire.

The altars on the right side are decorated by a Appearance of the Virgin by Stefano Volpi (1630), a Nativity of the Virgin by Alessandro Casolani (1585) and a reliquary of St. Catherine's relics. They are followed by the St. Catherine Chapel, with, in the centre, an altar housing the saint's head and thumb. Il Sodoma provided an Fainting and Ecstasy of St. Catherine and Death of Niccolò di Tuldo for the chapel, while by Francesco Vanni is a St. Catherine's Exorcism (1593-1596). The 15th century marble pavement, featuring Orpheus and animals, is attributed to Francesco di Giorgio.
