Monschau Germany ???????????? Medieval Town 4K HDR
I visited Monschau on a sunny Sunday afternoon in August 2022. Monschau is a romantic little town in the western part of Germany near the Belgian border. It is famous with tourists for its medieval center with half-timbered houses and narrow cobblestone streets and attracts many visitors for the picturesque views especially in the summer months. Located nearby is the Eifel National Park, another tourist highlight in the region.

Monschau, Walking Tour - Germany 4K Travel Channel
We came to Monschau because of this Christmas market, which is only open on weekends. Also, bad weather is forecast. But when we arrive on a Thursday, we are welcomed by pleasant sunshine. An opportunity for a walking tour to get to know the place.
Monschau lies in a narrow valley that the river Rur has cut into the Eifel mountains. Monschau belongs to the 10% of the most precipitation-rich places in Germany. Also, the sun has a hard time warming up the valley bottom in this narrow valley for a longer time. Up to now, this may have been a disadvantage. But in the age of climate catastrophe, it turns into an advantage.
Monschau was first mentioned in 1198. Beginning of the 13th century, one set up the castle of Monschau, which was extended to a fortress by the duke of Jülich at the beginning of the 14th century. In 1543, the fortress was conquered and plundered by Emperor Charles V.
During the 30-year war, many Protestant refugees came to Monschau, among them many cloth makers. In the 18th century, the son of a priest, Johann Heinrich Scheibler, led the cloth-making industry to its highest flowering.
On our way to the center, we make a small detour on the slope below the Haller (fortification), of which it is not clear whether it was part of the Monschau castle or an independent castle. From here, we have a beautiful panoramic view over Monschau. Already in 1971, the famous artist Christo came to Monschau and wrapped the Haller and the castle.
Back in the center, we find several cafes and restaurants around the market square.
At the corner is a nested group of buildings consisting of three half-timbered houses from the 16th/17th century. Until 1831 it was a well-known inn (Trierischer Hof) and, subsequently, a residential and commercial building. Since 1958, it houses Café Kaulard. Here we take a break and enjoy a selection of sweet Monschau specialties.
The bronze Weavers' Fountain, also known as the Clothmakers' Fountain, recalls the tradition of the cloth trade since the 17th century, which brought great wealth to Monschau at that time. The fountain, created by the Aachen sculptor Bonifatius Stirnberg, depicts the most relevant people in the craft, the weaver, the dyer, and the shearer.

Wir sind wegen des Weihnachtsmarktes nach Monschau gekommen, der aber nur am Wochenende geöffnet ist. Zudem ist auch noch schlechtes Wetter prognostiziert. Jedoch werden wir bei unserer Ankunft am einem Donnerstag von herrlichem Sonnenschein begrüßt. So nutzen wir die Gelegenheit, den Ort kennenzulernen.
Monschau liegt in einem schmalen Tal, das die Rur in die Eifelberge geschnitten hat. Monschau gehört zu den 10% der niederschlagsreichsten Orten in Deutschland. Auch die Sonne hat es schwer in diesem schmalen Tal den Talgrund über längere Zeit zu erwärmen. Bisher mag das eher ein Nachteil gewesen sein, im Zeitalter der Klimakatastrophe ist es eher als Vorteil zu werten.
Erstmals erwähnt wurde der Ort im Jahre 1198. Zu Beginn des 13ten Jahrhunderts erbaute man die Burg Monschau. Die Grafen von Jülich bauten die Burg am Anfang des 14ten Jahrhunderts zu einer Festung aus. Die Festung wurde 1543 von Kaiser Karl V erobert und geplündert .
Im 30-jahrigen Krieg kamen viele protestantische Flüchtlinge nach Monschau, darunter viele Tuchmacher. Im 18.Jahrhundert führte der Pfarrer-Sohn Johann Heinrich Scheibler die Tuchmacher-Industrie zu ihrer höchsten Blüte.
Auf unserem Weg in das Zentrum des Ortes machen wir einen kleinen Umweg auf den Abhang unterhalb der Wehranlage Haller, von der nicht geklärt ist, ob sie Teil der Monschauer Burg oder eine eigenständige Burg war. Von hier aus haben wir einen schönen Panoramablick über den Ort.
Bereits im Jahre 1971 kam der Künstler Christo nach Monschau und verpackte die Burg und den Haller.
Zurück im Zentrum finden wir eine Reihe von Cafes und Restaurants rund um den Marktplatz.
Am Eck ist eine verschachtelte Gebäudegruppe, bestehend aus drei Fachwerkhäusern aus dem 16./17 Jahrhundert. Bis 1831 war es ein bedeutendes Gasthaus (Trierischer Hof) und, anschließend Wohn- und Geschäftshaus. Seit 1958 ist hier das Café Kaulard. Hier machen wir eine Pause und genießen eine Auswahl der süßen Monschauer Spezialitäten.
Der bronzene Weberbrunnen, auch Tuchmacherbrunnen genannt, erinnert an die Tradition des Tuchhandels seit dem 17. Jahrhundert, die Monschau damals großen Reichtum bescherte.
