10. Sagres
Sitting at the westernmost tip of the Algarve, Sagres is the wildest and most untamed destination. Windswept, barren landscapes, towering cliffs, and rough waters are what set this place apart.
9. Portimão
Visit the Portimão museum if you want to learn more about its fishing and canning tradition, or go to the medieval Fort of Santa Catarina de Ribamar for panoramic views. But the biggest draw is undoubtedly Portimão’s nearby Praia da Rocha.
8. Faro & Ria Formosa
From cobblestone streets and cozy squares to a wide range of lagoons and wetlands, Faro boasts a blend of city and nature activities. We really enjoyed a boat tour in the Ria Formosa Natural Park, which is home to canals, marshland and small islands.

7. Aljezur & West Coast Beaches
With wide-open beaches and sheer sea cliffs, the West Coast of the Algarve is a true hidden gem. It’s also another prime destination for surfing. We recommend Arrifana Beach if you’re a beginner or intermediate surfer.
6. Fishermen’s Village Ferragudo
With its white houses reaching down to the river, walking around this authentic fishing town is an experience in itself. But Praia Grande is also a great place to relax and enjoy watersports.
5. Lagos & Ponta da Piedade
Lagos has a wide range of cafés and restaurants to choose from, but also some historical sights, such as castle walls, churches, and a fort. Combine this with its spectacular coastline, filled with steep cliffs, caves, and grottoes, and you’ve got one of the most scenic destinations in the Algarve.

4. Serra de Monchique
Apart from beautiful beaches, the Algarve is also home to a rolling mountain range. The town of Monchique lies in pristine nature, surrounded by lush green forests. It’s an idyllic and authentic mountain town with sweeping vistas and a network of nature trails.

3. Silves
This historic town cascades down the hill, flowing out from beneath the beautiful Silves Castle (Castelo de Silves). Enjoy your time learning about the town’s history inside the castle walls as well as on the cobbled streets surrounding it.
2. The 7 Hanging Valleys
This 12km out-and-back hike takes between 4 to 6 hours to complete if you do the full route, and includes views of the Atlantic ocean as well as limestone rock formations. There is some elevation gain and loss as you climb up and down each of the valleys, but overall the hike is easy to moderate.
1. Benagil Cave
The Benagil Cave is a world-class natural attraction in the Algarve. Although it’s only a short distance from Benagil Beach, you still need a kayak, stand up paddle board, or guided boat tour to reach the caves safely.

10. Vila Real and Castro Marim
These two frontier towns are in earshot of each other but have little in common. Sedate Castro Marim glories in its twin castles. Vila Real de Santo Antonio enjoys a livelier culture
9. Albufeira
Once a small fishing village it has now developed to be a very touristic area. Many holiday makers return year after year because of the lovely beaches, very good climate, proximity of many restaurants, bars and pubs.
8. Sagres
Sagres is located in the extreme southwest of continental Europe, and mark by two geomorphological structures: the Cape St. Vincent and Sagres Point, which establish a transition between the eastern coastal and meridional zones. Exposed to the Atlantic Ocean, it is influenced by Mediterranean currents.
7. Parque Natural da Ria Formosa
Parque Natural da Ria Formosa is a nesting ground and as a stopping point in migrating routes: Flamingos, Milherango, Storks and so on. Spend some time in close contact with the nature, the wonderful world of the birds in its more natural state, and let yourself be fascinated for the enchantment of its sounds, its forms and its colors.
6. Lagos
There is a great variety of things to see; The city center is sculped with traditional architecture and colors from the region. Beaches vary in shape and style from long sandy beaches to almost private ones hidden by cliffs. Ponta da Piedade is a beautiful spot with a nice lighthouse from where you can make boat tours to the natural caves.
5. Loulé
Loule hosts a colourful weekly market and is a thriving centre for local handicrafts. It is also the gateway to the central hinterland and the Caldeirao mountain range
4. Monchique
Monchique is a spa town. Monchique is the main town of the Serra de Monchique, the mountain range that separates the Algarve from Alentejo and the rest of Portugal to the north. Attractions include a historic town centre, spectacular views from the two peaks of Foia and Picota, hiking, bird watching and biking.
3. Silves
The region of Silves has been inhabited since the Palaeolithic, as attested by archaeological remains, including several menhirs. The river Arade, which was navigable in historical times, linked the hinterland to the open ocean and allowed the transport of produce and commerce. The town of Silves was possibly founded during the times of Roman domination, when the region was part of the Lusitania province.
2. Tavira
Nearly 40 churches endow this elegant riverside town with a romantic and disarmingly timeless air. The Gilao river glides effortlessly through the centre -- a Roman bridge connects the two sides of one of the prettiest towns in the Algarve.

Algarve - Portugals sonniger Süden | WDR Reisen
Die feinsandigen Traumstrände mit ihren bizarren Felsformationen sind das Markenzeichen der Algarve. Die südlichste der portugiesischen Provinzen punktet zudem mit einem spannenden Hinterland und einem angenehmen Klima. Andrea Grießmann bereist das Gebiet zwischen Olhao, dem Cabo de São Vicente und den Stränden an der Westküste. Zusammen mit ihrem Guide Michael Dias besichtigt sie in Lagos die Igreja de Santo António mit ihrem reich vergoldetem Altar, in Monchique das alte Kloster und am Cabo de Sao Vicente die Festung Forteleza de Sagres. Sie bummelt über den Bauernmarkt in Loulé, stellt das Eselprojekt von Sofia von Mentzingen vor, geht im Feuchtgebiet Lagoa dos Salgados mit dem deutschen Ornithologen Georg Schreier auf Vogelbeobachtung und wandert ein Stück auf dem alten Pilgerweg Via Algarviana. Sie segelt die Küste entlang, lernt Wellenreiten und testet an Europas südwestlichster Punkt die angeblich letzte Bratwurst vor Amerika.
Die schroffen Gesteinsformationen und Höhlen prägen das Bild der Fels-Algarve. Nahezu unbekannt sind die kleinen Inseln vor der Südküste. Andrea Grießmann besucht auf der Insel Culatra einen Muschelfischer und entdeckt einen fast menschenleeren Strand. Zurück an der Küste stürzt sie sich mit dem Surfbrett in die Wellen des Atlantiks. Ihr Lehrer Dago Lipke hat auch mit 60 Jahren die Lust am Wellenreiten nicht verloren.
Der Weg ins Hinterland führt vorbei an Storchennestern zum Monte Foia, mit 902 Metern der höchste Berg der Algarve. Andrea Grießmann wandert ein Stück auf der 328 km langen Via Algarviana, die sich zwischen der spanischen Grenze und der portugiesischen Westküste erstreckt.

Lagos is a charming port town that boasts dramatic natural scenery, situated in southern Portugal's Algarve region. We highlight the 6 best things to do in and around Lagos in this video:
6. Hit The Beach
Due to its year-round pleasant weather, one of the best things to do in Lagos is to hit the beach. Characterized by flanking rocky cliffs, hidden coves, and white sand, Lagos is home to many beaches that are perfect to relax and swim. Our favorite beaches for swimming include the sandy Duna Beach, the beautiful Dona Ana, Estudantes, Batata, and Camilo beach.
5. Explore Downtown Lagos
The downtown of Lagos is home to whitewashed houses and narrow cobbled streets, filled with cozy restaurants and cafés. It’s just fun to wander around, have a bite or drink, and relax. But if you want to learn a bit more about Lagos’ past, you can also visit the forte da ponte da bandeira, the iconic churches (Santo Antonio/Santa Maria Church), or one of the museums (Museu de Lagos dr. josé formosinho). It’s also a pleasure to roam around the traditional houses and check out the pretty harbour.
4. Walk The Cliffs
Starting at Pinhao beach, you can walk 3km of coastal cliffs all the way to the famous Ponta da Piedade. Winding above eccentric limestone formations and through diverse flora and fauna, this trail is truly special. Adventure lovers will find joy in getting lost and then navigating their way back to the path throughout the route. Even though the trail is not well-marked, you can just keep walking south the whole time along the cliffs and you’ll make it to Ponta da Piedade.
3. Ponta da piedade
Sitting 3.5 kilometers from the city center of Lagos, Ponta da Piedade is one of the most amazing natural sites to see in the area. Jagged limestone cliffs and hidden caves take center stage while pounding waves make beautiful music in the background. There is a boardwalk as well as small cliff trails that line the edges, winding around the magnificent lighthouse. We recommend arriving at the point an hour or so before sunset. In this way, you can get a little exercise in before rewarding yourself with one of the most beautiful sunset spots in all of Portugal!
2. Grutas boat tour or kayak tour
There are hundreds of caves and strange rock formations that go along the coast from Batata Beach to Ponta da piedade. While it’s fun to walk along the top of the cliffs, it’s even more impressive to see them from the ocean level. You have a few options for guided tours of these special cliffs. You can either go on a guided kayak or boat tour that leaves from downtown Lagos. While the kayak is more adventurous, it can also be a little rough because of weather conditions!

1. Day trip to Benagil cave
Located about 35 kilometers from Lagos, The Benagil Cave is an amazing natural attraction in the Algarve. You can get to the cave by rental car or by boat tour directly from Lagos. Keep in mind that if you choose the boat tour, you won’t be able to see the inside of the cave since the boat is too big. That’s why we recommend renting a car or scooter to get to the cave and then renting a kayak at the beach itself.

This is the Algarve region, but we're in the green mountains... not down at the beach! You'll see mountain views from the slopes of the Serra de Monchique. Monchique is the home of the monchique termas, which are blissful natural thermal spas! ????????♀️
You'll see what the landscape is like and also learn about wild food. ???????? Most people do the Monchique Fóia Trail, but few know about this one! I think it's one of the best walks in the Algarve. I've filmed this mostly in POV so you can see what I see.
The waters of Caldas de Monchique have been famous since Roman times because of people's beliefs about their healing properties.... and for love! ???? This special place was often used as a special holiday retreat for Portuguese royalty. ????
Nowadays, you don't have to be a Royal to visit. So, come along and explore as part of a hiking meetup group with me!
