Day Trip to Monahans ⛱ (FULL EPISODE) S6 E10
THROWBACK EPISODE - This episode originally aired on PBS on May 6, 2015. Some of the locations may have changed. Check for the most up-to-date information.
It’s been called “Texas’s Largest Beach Without an Ocean.” That’s true, but it’s also a rugged West Texas town that sits atop a massive dune field that reaches deep into New Mexico. Yet, those that travel here will find much more than sand.
Let’s start with the main event. By far the most popular thing to do in town is visit Monahans Sandhills State Park. It’s just east of town, but feels like it’s east of the Atlantic Ocean somewhere in the middle of the Sahara Desert. You can hike over the wind-swept dunes or checkout a sled from the front office and ride them to your heart’s delight.

If you’re looking for a history lesson on Monahans and Ward County, head to the Million Barrel Museum (or Ward County Museum). This collection of historic buildings and artifacts is built around a concrete pit that could once hold a MILLION barrels of oil.
Also in the Million Barrel Museum is the Rattlesnake Bomber Base Museum that’ s all about the World War 2 era training facility that used to be in nearby Pyote, TX teaching B-17 and B-29 pilots to fly in the 1940’s.
Another museum not to be missed is the Roy Orbison Museum in Wink, TX. The famed rock-and-roll musician called this town home before he hit the big time with hits like “Pretty Woman” and “Only the Lonely.” You can see relics of Roy’s childhood and even touch his last pair of prescription sunglasses.
The town and surrounding area are full of country cafes and awesome Tex-Mex establishments. One of my favorites is Pappy’s Bar B-Q. This place is smoking tasty meats over mesquite and has even made it to the Texas Monthly Top 50. While I’m not usually one to recommend it – don’t miss the chicken.

Sand sledding, running around on sand dunes, and exploring a very cool hidden gem in West Texas, this was one of our favorite places on our Texas road trip! I never knew that Texas had sand dunes, this was an awesome surprise, it's a great place for hanging out, some adventure, photography, and camping, check it out!

Texas has some of the best state parks to visit in the United States. The landscape changes so much from one area to the other, that you will find lakes, woodland, marshes, canyons, and sand dunes. This is a list of exciting Texas state parks for kids.
What to know before you visit Texas State Parks
Currently, Texas state parks are open for day use, and limited overnight camping. Visitors to the state parks must wear masks and practice safe social distancing. Hiking groups are limited to ten people or less (unless they are all related).
How to Find the Best Hiking Trails at Each Park
We are huge fans of the AllTrails app. Download it to your phone and it will tell you everything from the best hiking trails nearby, to the number of trails at each park, a trail map, dog friendly hikes, and even share reviews of each trail. It is an invaluable tool when planning a hike with kids.
Finally, you must reserve a day pass ahead of time, even if you have a Texas Parks pass. Passes are available as timed entry or regular entry, and are available for print or mobile use. Please note that some park services may be limited, so be sure and check the Texas parks website prior to heading out.

We visit Monahans Sandhills State Park located in Monahans, Texas. Monahans Sandhills offers Texas-sized sandbox for kids and adults. We review the park entrance fee, sand disk rental fees, things to do at the park and view the campsites. The park located a few miles away from Odessa and Midland.
Ocean of Sand
Out west lies a mystical place where the wind sculpts sand dunes into peaks and valleys, sometimes overnight. Monahans Sandhills State Park offers a Texas-sized sandbox for kids of all ages, as well as a close-up view of a unique desert environment.
Things to Do
Rent sand disks and surf the dunes. Learn about the park and its natural and cultural history at the Dunagan Visitors Center. Set up camp and witness spectacular sunsets.
Explore the dunes
The park does not have marked trails – you are free to explore at will. Watch for the myriad of creatures, plants and wildflowers that thrive in what seems to be an inhospitable place.
Rent sand disks at headquarters and slide and tumble down the dunes (for kids of all ages).
