Mardin is a picturesque mountain town near the border of Syria with beautiful architecture, fascinating history, amazing food and very friendly people! We highly recommend adding this lesser visited area of Turkey to your travel bucket list!!

10 places to visit Turkey - cappadocia, eagean, pamukalle, konya, burdur, island, black island, van, istanbul
Cappadocia, a semi-arid region in central Turkey, is known for its distinctive “fairy chimneys,” tall, cone-shaped rock formations clustered in Monks Valley, Göreme and elsewhere. Other notables sites include Bronze Age homes carved into valley walls by troglodytes (cave dwellers) and later used as refuges by early Christians. The 100m-deep Ihlara Canyon houses numerous rock-face churches.
Pamukkale is a town in western Turkey known for the mineral-rich thermal waters flowing down white travertine terraces on a nearby hillside. It neighbors Hierapolis, an ancient Roman spa city founded around 190 B.C. Ruins there include a well-preserved theater and a necropolis with sarcophagi that stretch for 2km. The Antique Pool is famous for its submerged Roman columns, the result of an earthquake.
The Princes’ Islands are a cluster of 9 islands southeast of Istanbul in the Sea of Marmara. Mainly car-free, the islands are known for their horse-drawn carriages (phaetons). At the highest point of Büyükada, the largest island, the 6th-century Hagia Yorgi Church has panoramic views. Nearby are the pine forests of Dil Burnu National Park. The Museum of the Princes’ Islands has exhibits on the islands’ history.
Van is a city in eastern Turkey's Van Province, located on the eastern shore of Lake Van in Turkish Kurdistan. The city has a long history as a major urban area.

Mardin is a city in southeastern Turkey. The capital of Mardin Province in Turkish Kurdistan, it is known for the Artuqid architecture of its old city, and for its strategic location on a rocky hill near the Tigris River that rises steeply over the flat plains.
The Aegean Region is one of the 7 geographical regions of Turkey. Located in western Turkey, it is bordered by the Aegean Sea to the west, the Marmara Region to the north, the Central Anatolia Region to the east, and the Mediterranean Region to the south.

First Impressions of Midyat Turkey
Today we're traveling from Mardin Turkey to Midyat Turkey. During this jounrey across Southern Tukrey we will be visiting a 4,000 year old Sumerian Temple, the old head of the Asyrian Religion, a Roman graveyard for residents of the Roman city of Dala along with the Dala cistern, the Syrian Boarder with Turkey and finally the AMAZING city of Midyat Turkey!

The history of Midyat can be traced back to the 3rd millennium BC. Today over 6,000 Christians live in harmony with their neighbors. It was here that I learned about the ancient goddess of fertility Shahmaran from my guide Taha Ozyavuz.

Mardin City Guide - One of the most beautiful cities in Turkey!
What we are about to explore in this Mardin Travel Guide is the summary of our visit to Mardin in June 2022, one of the most beautiful cities in Turkey.
One of the oldest cities of Northern Mesopotamia, Mardin seems locked in time, with its unique texture and amazing architecture.
Mardin, with its elegant limestone buildings overlooking the Mesopotamian plains, is arguably one of Turkey’s most beautiful cities. It’s also one of the country’s most historically rich and culturally interesting, with the region being home to a mix of Kurds, Arabs, and Assyrians.
We had seen a couple of pictures, but we really didn’t expect such beauty and authenticity. Besides, Mardin has little mass tourism. We were lucky enough to be some of the few tourists in the city. However, it won’t remain under the radar for much longer, so you better visit soon.
While you can see all of the historical sites over the course of a few days, allow yourself even more time to visit the nearby sites of the scenic Deyrulzafaran Monastery and Dara, the important East Roman fortress city.

Mardin is a picturesque mountain town near the border of Syria, in the south easter part of Turkey. Between the incredible architecture, the amazing food... and of course the trash donkeys, we really need to consider visiting :)

Mardin, Turkey ???????? - Only 10 km from the Syrian border! ????
Mardin is a historical city in the southeast of Turkey. The city is divided in two parts. The old part lies on top of a hill and is known for it´s architecture consisting of stonework. From the citadel you can enjoy endless views to the Mesopotamian plains. I also visited the Deyrulzafaran Monastery there.
As the border of Syria is just a 20 minutes ride from Mardin, I was worried a bit about the safety....So check out what happened in this video!
