Lord of the Lake Flies
This is an amalgamation of the footage I have been collecting of the swarms of lake flies sometimes seen on Lake Malawi.
The swarms are usually seen several miles out on the lake and look like smoke rising out of the water. They drift wherever the wind takes them and form strange boiling vortex-like patterns.
The flies themselves are very small so these clouds must contain millions of individuals, all frantically trying to get their genes into the next generation.
Although the flies are small and are usually well out in the lake they do sometimes make landfall. When one of these clouds arrived ashore at our house my first thought was of a movie special effect. By then the local birds were in a frenzy and the sky was a brown blur of moving bodies. At first the flies mostly stayed 10 metres or so off the ground, but at dusk they came down. They are smaller than the holes in the screening on our windows. They stink of rotten fish. We spent most the next day sweeping and cleaning. We collected about 15 liters of them just from inside the house.
Next time they make landfall at our house we're going to tape up the doors and windows and go away. On the plus side the gardener took a bucket of them home for his wife to bake into cakes. Apparently they are very nice.
