Ethiopia Travel Guide + Vlog | Addis Ababa and Awassa

What are the best things to do in Ethiopia? This travel guide slash vlog will show you everything I did during my two weeks there! From Addis Ababa to Awassa, I'll take you to two beautiful regions of the country and share some of my best travel tips.

I visited Ethiopia for work, so didn't get to do many typical touristy things like the churches in Lalibela, Danakil Depression or hiking the Simien Mountains. But my experiences were perhaps a little more local and authentic than your average guided tour, so I hope you'll take this video for what it is.

Have you ever been to Ethiopia? Did you just pass through the capital of Addis Ababa, or did you have time to go sightseeing? Let me know in a comment below, I'm so curious!

Visiting Tigray, The Worst War You've Never Heard Of (#173)

Ukraine. Israel/Palestine. Some conflicts dominate the news cycle, while others pass by barely noticed -- Sudan, Myanmar, Congo, just to name a few. But the most violent war of the past decade was in a place many have never heard of: Tigray, in northern Ethiopia.

In just 2 short years between 2021 and 2022, a brutal struggle was fought between the Ethiopian government and the Tigrayan people. At least half a million people lost their lives.

But Tigray used to be known for more than just conflict. It's the home of Axum, an ancient city that could be considered the beginning of Ethiopia. It's also supposedly the place where the Ark of the Covenant is held, which is said to hold the 10 Commandments. Intense.

No one wants to visit this place. I decided to go for it.

Ethiopia is one of the oldest countries in the world. In the long and disturbed history of the African continent, Ethiopia remains the only country which has never been colonized (except for a brief occupation by Italy during World War II). Ethiopia was a founding member of the AU and is home to the African Union's headquarters. The Old Testament of the Bible records the Queen of Sheba's visit to Jerusalem.

In fact, historians believe that Ethiopia may well be the beginning of humankind. The fossils of the oldest once-living humans or Lucy were discovered in the the northern section of Ethiopia. The remains of the fossil are said to be 3.5 million years old.

After a long and difficult period under self-declared communist rulers, the country is now back on its feet. The long history assures that there are many historic sites in the country. The natural beauty, with high mountains, lakes, waterfalls as well as arid deserts are among the natural attractions of Ethiopia.

Cities
Addis Ababa – capital of Ethiopia and one of the biggest shopping cities in Africa
Adama (also known as Nazret or Nazareth) – a popular weekend destination near Addis

Lalibela – home to 11 astonishing rock-hewn churches
Mekele – a town in the Tigrayan Highlands in the north

Destinations

Ethiopia by HandZaround

'Ehtiopia' is a personal project of travellers HandZaround.com funded in majority by them and created in their free time.

Read more about the film here:

'Green highlands, barren deserts, impassable lowlands, sparkling waterfalls, glistening lakes, bustling towns. We can’t describe Ethiopia with one word, unless we reach for ‘diversity’.

‘Ethiopia’ takes you on a journey off the beaten track through Northern lands of the country. It offers you a glimpse into the life of Amharic people living in the highlands, a chance to take part in important religious celebrations of Meskel, and a visit through a myriad of majestic Ethiopian landscapes, varying from the hottest desolate reds of Danakil Depression, to tremendous Blue Nile Falls, to the colourful mixture of cultures that you can find in the country’s capital, Addis Ababa.

Although the film is our personal tribute to this unique and vast country, it was impossible to include all that Ethiopia comprises of. We have yet to visit the South, East and West of Ethiopia. For more information about the places featured in the film, head to the article on our website:
handzaround.com/journal-1/ethiopia-travel-film

We are of course aware that Ethiopia consists of Muslim population, and other religions, but unfortunately we didn't have enough time and funds to represent the whole cultural, religious and natural landscape of Ethiopia.

In our description and in our understanding the word 'diverse' applies mainly to Ethiopian geography ('Green highlands, barren deserts, impassable lowlands, sparkling waterfalls, glistening lakes, bustling towns. We can’t describe Ethiopia with one word, unless we reach for ‘diversity’ '), and in our opinion Ethiopia is very diverse in that sense, especially in comparison to the countries we come from.'

Rock-Hewn Churches of Lalibela, Ethiopia [Amazing Places]

The 11 medieval monolithic cave churches were built or rather carved from the rock by king Lalibela in the 13th century to create a 'New Jerusalem'. In the video: walk around the 11 Lalibela churches, beginning with a morning mass at Bet Giyorgis, and following with Bet Medhane Alem, Bet Maryam, Bet Danaghel, Bet Gabriel-Rafael, Bet Emanuel, Bet Abba Libanos. At the very end - Yemrehanna Kristos church, located in a natural cavern, 40 km from Lalibela, predating the Lalibela churches by a century. The Lalibela Rock Hewn churches are UNESCO World Heritage site.

Recorded March 2014 in HD with Panasonic TM900.

Mekele to Erta Ale | Ethiopia Vlog 7

We started the journey to Erta Ale Volcano from Mekele on 7th June 2019. We stopped at Abala to get some permit and then we stopped at a small village for lunch. As we approached the volcano, we could see plenty of volcanic rocks. The roads deteriorated. By evening 6 pm we reached the base camp of the volcano.

Mekelle city 'MEKELLINA -NEW-

Mek'ele is a city and woreda in northern Ethiopia. Located in Enderta which is in the Debubawi Zone, Mek'ele is the capital of the Tigray Region and home to the headquarters of the United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea. It is located some 650 kilometers north of the capital, Addis Ababa, at latitude and longitude 13°29′N 39°28′E with an elevation of 2084 meters above sea level.
Mek'ele is one of Ethiopia's principal economic and educational centers. Intercity bus service is provided by the Selam Bus Line Share Company. A new international standard airport, Alula Aba Nega Airport (ICAO code HAMK, IATA MQX), has been opened very recently, as well as northern Ethiopia's principal cement production facility. In May 2000, Mekelle University was created by the merger of Mekelle Business College and Mekelle University College.
There are two primary local landmarks in this city. The Tigrayan People's Liberation Front (TPLF) monument commemorating the struggle against and overthrow of the Derg, is visible from most of the city -
The other is the palace of Yohannes IV at the northern edge of Mek'ele. It was built at the Emperor's command by Giacomo Naretti, who had served Yohannes already at Debre Tabor, with the assistance of William Schimper, and completed in 1884.[1] The complex still stands and now serves as a museum, where the Emperors throne, royal bed, ceremonial dress, rifles and many other valuable historical collections can be seen.
Other notable landmarks include the churches Enda GabirEnda Yesus Mek'ele Bete Mengist, Mek'ele Iyesus Bete Kristiyan, Mek'ele Maryam Bete Kristiyan, Mek'ele Selassie Bete Kristiyan, and Mek'ele Tekle Haymanot Bete Kristiyan. Trans Ethiopia is the local soccer team. A local market has been held every Monday since at least 1890.

Mekele is the seat of a historical palace called Atse Yohannes IV Palace named after the famous King who ruled Ethiopia from 1872-1889. Emperor Yohannes chose Mekelle as the seat of his government and built his graceful palace, still intact, in 1870s. The palace now serves as a museum. The Emperor’s throne, royal bed, ceremonial dress, rifles and many other valuable historical collections can be seen in the museum and the fantastic throne of Atse Yohannnes IV made by the Italian engineer Giacomo Nareri in 1874 is the eye catching centerpiece of the museum.
