Chinese steam 2011 Hongmiao

Hongmiao coal mine is not far from Yuanbaoshan. A lone SY works hard on its short trips, making a visit worthwhile.
SY 1565 shunting wagons.
It then makes a spirited uphill run though the trees taking empties to the mine.
At the mine the SY makes up a train of loaded coal wagons before departing tender first for the National Rail exchange sidings at Malin.

Yebaishou by Night

Picture this - it was a hot and humid August trip to China around 1994. Ted Talbot and I arrived in China after a period of heavy rain and flooding in June and July and the result was very high humidity and poor air clarity throughout and very trying daytime conditions. Ted’s still cameras stayed mainly in the camera bag. I showed the cook in the restaurant how to cook proper chips and made up a tomato kechup from tomato paste and vinegar. This night shot was my best bit of video of the whole trip! We left Yebaishou around 23:00 and before our steam-hauled overnight train to Chengde arrived, these two back-to-back QJs on an engineers’ train with another QJ on the rear set off along with a shunting JS in parallel. Magic! Oh to have the chance to do this again with a current generation video camera.

China Steam Spectacular!

Imagine thousands of steam locomotives in everyday use, rolling through lands of stunning beauty. That was steam railroading in China in 2001 when this exciting documentary was filmed. Much of it is hauntingly similar to the American railroads of the 1930s-1950s. All of it is fascinating. Join our tour of six unique sites and see why steam in China may be the greatest railroad show on earth!

We begin on legendary Jing Peng Pass with its 40 miles of tunnels, 2% ruling grade, horse shoe curves, and spiral bridges entirely serviced by double-headed 2-10-2 QJ class locomotives. Next we take you to Daban where the entire fleet of 100 QJ's are serviced. Their resemblance to Union Pacific or NYC locomotives, with smoke box deflectors, Boxpok driving wheels, and large smokebox-mounted headlights, is remarkable. In the coal mining region of Tiefa, a fleet of thirty 2-8-2 SY class locomotives pull fast commuter trains with amazing frequency. Our camera catches the action there near a busy double diamond junction. The Dahiuchang Limestone Quarry near Beijing is an enchanting narrow gauge steam line where we'll view endless strings of tiny ore cars pulled by miniature locomotives. At Anshan, we are granted rare access into one of the world's largest steel mills. It operates its own fleet of forty 2-8-2's and the activity level is incredible. Finally, we'll witness the awesome brute strength of three 2-8-2's straining full throttle up the 3-1/2 percent grade to the Chengde steel mill complex. This line has it all: steep curves, rock cuts, narrow tunnels, and terrific rural scenery. Experience the wonder of it all in China Steam Spectacular!

Chinese Steam, Fuxin 2 - SY in Trouble

Just before leaving the area to visit the loco depot and workshops we heard an SY with a train of loaded coal wagons heading for the power plant. When it started to slip on the incline from the mine we rapidly set up our equipment again to record the drama. December 2009

Like many industrial locations, Fuxin in Liaoning Provence, NE China is a shadow of its former self with regard to steam activity. However, in December 2009 it was still possible to see a good line up at the stabling point ready for the morning shift. Soon after assembling, the locos depart for duties between the mine and power plant. During our visit we saw twelve different locos in steam. A pleasant surprise in this industrial city is a clear blue, pollution free sky. At about 5:12 note the flag-man on the last wagon. Despite a temperature of about minus 10 degrees C he has no protection from the elements. The strange repetitive voice that can be heard in the background near the end of the clip is a woman selling sweets intoning her sales pitch into a megaphone. December 2009.

Steam in China 2000 – Daban Loco Depot, Ji-Tong Line

The video begins with some scenes shot at the east end of the Jing Peng Pass overlooking the small town of Reshui. This is followed by some shunting at an unknown location on the Ji-Tong Line.
Until the line was dieselised in 2005, Daban Loco Depot was probably the last standard gauge main line steam depot in the world. It was always noisy and full of atmosphere. The Ji-Tong line was not part of China Rail but a Provincial Railway in Inner Mongolia that used QJ class locomotives purchased second hand from them. As well as routine maintenance and repair, Daban Depot refurbished ex China Rail QJs for use on the line.

China - SY1771 & 1772 working Passenger at TieFa in 2012, Part 2

With this compilation, I have reworked some of my video from the TieFa system based around the city of DiaoBingShan in northern China.
A few years earlier this had been an extensive and fully steam worked system with freight and passenger but by my last visit there in November and December 2012, only passenger services were still steam worked.
The locomotives featured here are 2-8-2 SY1771 and 1772.
SY1772 (on the 4 coach train) was the last ever standard gauge steam locomotive built in the world for general (non-tourist) work. It was outshopped in January 2000 and so was less than 13 years old here.
As far as I am aware, it is now preserved in China but this is unconfirmed.
Recorded in November/December 1999.

Steam in China 2003 Ji Tong Railway Part 2

Continuing winter steam action on the Ji Tong railway in Inner Mongolia.

Chinese Steam 2011 - Pingzhuan 1

Pingzhuan coal mine is located in Inner Mongolia, 50kms south of Chiefeng.
Locos are being prepared at the stabling point.
Despite the sunshine, the air temperature is about -15°C, this does not seem to concern the birds who chirp happily in the background. Soon, the the exhaust of an SY can be seen and then heard as it hauls a 3500 ton coal train towards the China Rail exchange sidings at Pingzhuan Nan. Just as the loco passes, the fireman blows down the boiler, covering the camera and tripod in fine water droplets which instantly freeze on contact the cold metal. This would probably be my last opportunity to see a train of this weight hauled by steam so I indulged myself and included all the wagons.
After leaving its load at the exchange sidings, the loco returns with a rake of empties. An impatient car driver hoot angrily because my tripod is partially blocking the lightly used and dusty side road.
With the sound of distant firecrackers in the background a tender first SY approaches a level crossing.
