Top 5 Hikes in the Eastern United States | Best Trails on the East Coast of America

The Eastern United States is home to the country’s longest marked footpath (Appalachian Trail), America’s favorite drive (Blue Ridge Parkway), and the nation’s most visited National Park (Great Smoky Mountains). This makes it a premier destination for outdoor enthusiasts. The East plays host to some of America’s most picturesque mountains surrounded by trails with rugged terrain that is protected by some of the most extreme and unpredictable weather on the continent. From the unruly summits of New Hampshire to the rocky coastline of Maine and the blue tinted mountains of North Carolina, this is where hikers go to get their fill of natural challenges and breathtaking views. Thick, diverse forests, rocky hiking scrambles, babbling brooks, and stunning fall foliage are all part of the deal when you punch your ticket to the right coast's best trails. These are the Top 5 Hikes of the Eastern United States.

CONTENTS
00:00 Teaser Overview
01:46 #5 Beehive Loop
04:16 #4 Old Rag Mountain
06:43 #3 Mount LeConte
09:13 #2 Grandfather Peaks
11:45 #1 Franconia Ridge
14:14 Hike Compare Outro

5. Beehive Loop Trail, Acadia National Park, ME
The Beehive Trail is a flagship hike in Acadia National Park, Maine. It is an exhilarating hike that takes you up exposed rock cliffs using iron rungs on your way to spectacular oceanside overlooks. Although hikers are reminded that this is not for those with a fear of heights, many use this as an opportunity to overcome that apprehension and reap the rewards of breathtaking views.

4. Old Rag Mountain Loop, Shenandoah National Park, VA
Virginia is the home to Old Rag, the most popular - and most dangerous - hike in Shenandoah National Park. Due to its challenges and stunning scenery, it is often rated as one America’s best hikes. This circuit hike contains a lengthy and rigorous rock scramble that should not be taken lightly. Additionally, there are 2,700 feet of vertical gain over a ten mile loop. This is not for everyone, but for those who tackle it, fantastic rewards await.

3. Mount LeConte via Alum Cave Trail, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, TN
Within the borders of Tennessee you will find much of the Smoky Mountains as well as the 6,600 foot summit of Mount LeConte. The longest and highest hike on this list, the trail to Mount LeConte ascends 3,250 feet during the first half of a 12-and-a-half mile out-and-back. Although not as technically challenging as Old Rag, this hike is very strenuous in its own right. But with this effort comes the reward of breathtaking views from one of the nation’s top hikes.

2. Grandfather Peaks via Profile Trail, Grandfather Mountain State Park, NC
In the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina lies the iconic and notoriously rugged Grandfather Mountain. The Profile Trail is the steepest route from the base of the mountain to the top, giving hikers access to the three tallest peaks: Attic Window, MacRae Peak, and the tallest summit, Calloway Peak. Hikers be warned - this may be the most difficult and technical hike in the eastern United States. Those up for the challenge should be prepared for a slow and deliberate trek as you use ladders, cables, and all-fours to traverse rugged and sometimes unstable terrain. Throw in unpredictable weather that includes mountaintop winds that can reach up to 200 miles per hour, and you have an adventure in the making.

1. Mount Lafayette via Franconia Ridge Loop, Franconia Notch State Park, NH
Nestled in the Northern Appalachian Mountains of New Hampshire are the beautiful and rugged White Mountains, home to the Franconia Notch State Park and our famed Franconia Ridge Loop. This hike takes you from the trailhead up a strenuous 4-mile, 3,500 foot climb past a number of elegant waterfalls on your way to the rugged alpine tundra. Once there, you will encounter up-and-down exposed hiking as you traverse the famed knife ridge between three peaks: Little Haystack, Mount Lincoln, and Mount Lafayette. This rite of passage for adventure-seekers combines steep, rocky terrain entwined with a cascading brook and breath-taking panoramic views. Once experienced, there will be no question as to why this escapade is listed among National Geographic’s list of the 20 “World’s Best Hikes”. The rewards, however, are not simply provided; they must be earned.

While all of these hikes are very demanding, what makes each one difficult varies. This chart shows a variety of trail attributes - as well as the components that make each hike difficult. These top hikes may indeed take all the energy you have - but rest assured that it will be given back many-fold in return.

Top 10 Towns You Can Retire on $1658 a month in the Southern US

Are you thinking about retiring soon? Are you looking for an affordable town to retire in? Maybe you aren't retiring but still looking for a nice town where you can afford a home. If you are in those situations this video is for you.
We researched the Southern United States looking for the best towns someone could survive on Social Security only. That monthly check is currently $1658 a month. We looked at Cost of Living, housing, health care deductibles, insurance, and Utilities. These towns are the best bet for the average person on Social Security or some other sort of fixed income.
Most of these towns have homes for sale that can fit your budget. A Real Estate purchase in some of these towns is almost cheaper than renting.
Today we are looking at the Southern States. Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, Louisiana, and Kentucky. Virginia and West Virginia should be on this list but some consider those part of the North Atlantic.

Side Note: This is focusing on residential real estate not commercial. People keep asking that for some reason. These are just the affordable and best places to retire or live in the southern United States.

CAPE BRETON Travel Guide ???? | Things to do in Cape Breton, NOVA SCOTIA, Canada ????????

Hello and greetings from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia where in this travel guide we plan to highlight some of the top things to do for visitors! We recently spent a week road-tripping the island and what an adventure that was! This was our fourth summer exploring Nova Scotia, and this time around we focused on southern Cape Breton, specifically the area between St. Peter’s and Port Hastings. Here is our Cape Breton Travel Guide covering some fascinating things to do in Nova Scotia, Canada.

I think this is a really interesting area to visit because it is very accessible. Port Hastings is the first town you hit if you’re crossing via the Canso Causeway (the only land access point to the island!), so it’s a logical starting point, and it makes a lot of sense for travellers who want to see a bit of Cape Breton without having to drive too far.

We spent our week in southern Cape Breton doing an iconic sail from lake to sea, feasting on seafood at every meal, tackling different hiking trails, and enjoying the warm hospitality the island is known for.

So hit that subscribe button and join us as we explore Cape Breton, Nova Scotia!

Places we visited in southern Cape Breton:

St Peter’s Canal Sailing Tour
The Island Nest
LeNoir Forge
Lennox Passage Provincial Park
The Groundswell Inn
Battery Provincial Park
St Peter’s Coastal Trail
Lockmaster’s Pub
Miller's
Port Hawkesbury Community Trails
The Country Kitchen
Celtic Shores Coastal Trail
Canso Causeway
The Cove
Dundee Resort and Golf Club
MacRae’s Dining Room

Grandfather Mountain | Most Extreme Trail In North Carolina | Fall Foliage

Right off the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina is one of the most extreme trails in North Carolina, the Grandfather Mountain trail. It is an epic trail with amazing views every step of the way. It has ropes and ladders and outlooks and peaks aplenty. Grandfather Mountain NC is one of the best places to explore and view peak season North Carolina. It is absolutely beautiful! We were so excited to experience peak season in the Blue Ridge Parkway and from the many peaks of Grandfather Mountain. To enter Grandfather Mountain State Park it is $22 per person and it is best if you make a reservation because they do limit the number of people allowed in. You must be back at your car by 6:00pm or they will begin a search. This is an extreme hike and not for the faint of heart or those afraid of heights. If you don't think you are up for the hike please enjoy this video!

Poverty in Arkansas.

10 Arkansas small towns with the worst poverty.
10 Poorest towns in Arkansas.

Today we are going to take a look at Arkansas and the mess that it is.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the national poverty rate was 11.8% percent or 38.1 million Americans in 2018. These states have the highest percentages of poverty in the country: Mississippi, New Mexico, Louisiana, West Virginia, Arkansas, Kentucky, Alabama, District of Colombia, Oklahoma, South Carolina and the territory of Puerto Rico.

So why are we starting with Arkansas? Last month I got an email from a guy named Glen in Little Rock who said
I best not put Arkansas in my mouth again. He said he’d find me and pull me out of my electric car and crush my head.
I replied: Dude how did you watch my video, you are using AOL dial-up service.
He replied. What’s wrong with that.
I replied “Nothing if it were 1997.
He never replied again. So, in Glen's honor, I am putting Arkansas back in my mouth and we are going to look at the poorest towns in Arkansas.
Thanks for checking out the channel. I hope you enjoyed today's video. If there is a state, city or town you'd like us to do a video about let us know in the comment section.

Hiking Guide to the Craziest Hike in North Carolina ????

More info on this crazy, epic hike ⤵️

But first, welcome to another TRAIL TALK THURSDAY! Haddd to highlight this wild, North Carolina trail! ????

(???? ???????????????? ???????????? ???????????????? ???????????????????????? ???????? ???????????????????????? ????????????????????????????????????????)

________

⛔️ It’s extremely important to know and practice all the Leave No Trace principles to help protect and preserve these beautiful places in nature and to minimize our impact the best we can! Also to aid in preventing any possible tragedies (ie. wildfires, rock slides + so much more).⛔️
________

????Grandfather Trail (to Calloway Peak) in Grandfather Mountain State Park, North Carolina

???? Parking for hikers is in the lower parking lot below the parking for Mile High Bridge & Visitor’s Center. Then, it’s a 0.5 mile hike up to the trailhead which is across the parking lot from visitor’s center.

???? We clocked our distance at ~7 miles (accounting for some side-off trails like MacCrae Peak, Shanty Spring, Indian House Cave etc). I highly recommend going up to MacCrae Peak -Best views!

⛰ This trail is rated difficult / strenuous with elevation gain of over 2,000ft and many ladders and cables. Rock scrambling is required in areas such as Attic Window as well.

???? Cost of admission is $24 per person and you should snag a permit online beforehand (

⏰ Definitely try to reserve the earliest time slot you can (ours was 8am, the first time available). Thus, we were the first people on the trail and didn’t have to wait as others traversed the ladders & cables.

✨ All in all, I couldn’t have enjoyed this hike more! I absolutely loved the added challenge of all the obstacles!! Not to mention: the VIEWS are insane as you hike along the ridge. Absolutely beautiful! And crazy (in all the best ways)!! ????????????????????

Lees McRae College/ Banner Elk 4K in the Snow (DJI Mavic Air 2 Drone Footage) Middle of Ski Country!

Lees–McRae College is a private college in Banner Elk, North Carolina, affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA). Lees–McRae College sits in the Appalachian Mountains at 3,720 feet (1,130 m) above sea level,[5] the highest elevation of any American college or university east of the Mississippi River. It is one of the few colleges to be named after two women, Suzanna Lees and Elizabeth McRae.

Lees–McRae College was founded in Banner Elk as an all-female high school in 1899 by the Reverend Edgar Tufts, a Presbyterian minister. He named the school The Elizabeth McRae Institute after a well-respected educator in 1900. The name of school benefactor Suzanna Lees was added in 1903, and the school became The Lees–McRae Institute when it was chartered by the state in 1907.

An all-male branch was founded in 1907 in nearby Plumtree, North Carolina. The Plumtree facility was destroyed in a 1927 fire, leading the two campuses to merge at the Banner Elk site. After the merger, the high school program was phased out, and in 1931 the institute was renamed Lees–McRae College as an accredited, coeducational junior college.

Lees–McRae began moving toward offering a four-year program in the late 1980s, and the school's president made the recommendation to the board of trustees in 1987. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools granted Lees–McRae status as a four-year college in 1990. In 2005, Lees–McRae became the first expansion site for New Opportunity School for Women, a program that helps educate and employ women in Appalachia.

Landmarks on campus include the historic Rock House, built in 1920 of native stone; Tufts Tower, a former water tower that houses the campus chimes; and the North Carolina Building, completed in 1922 and one of three permanent buildings planned by the college's founder. Also, there is Tate Residence Hall, originally the town hospital; and Tennessee and Virginia residence halls, constructed from stones from those respective states. The college's bookstore, named The Exchange, accepted chickens, pigs, grain, other crops and livestock in exchange for education costs in the early years of the college's history.
