NWR HARDAP DAM RESORT & RESERVE IN HARDAP REGION NAMIBIA SOUTHERN AFRICA

Archive video of visit to NWR Hardap Dam Resort in southern Namibia in February 2017.

#NWRHardapDamResort #NamibiaMariental #SouthernAfrica

Hardap Dam Resort:

Hardap Dam is a dam near town Mariental in Hardap Region of Namibia. Built in 1963 while Namibia was under South African rule, Hardap Dam is the largest dam in Namibia. The reservoir dams the Fish River and is home to numerous examples of wildlife of Namibia.

First planned in 1897, Hardap Dam is Namibia's largest dam with a capacity of 320 million cubic metres and a surface area of 25 square km (2,500 ha). Construction began in 1960 and completed in 1963.

Hardap Dam supplies Mariental and the surrounding settlements with potable water. Its location close to the city, however, also poses a danger of flooding it when sluices have to be opened fully due to good rains in the Fish River's catchment area. Reed grasses growing in the riverbed of Fish slow down the flow of water and further aggravate the danger of flooding.

Before the dam was built, Mariental was flooded in 1923 and 1934. Floods after the commissioning of the dam occurred in 1972, 1974, 1976, 2000, and 2006. Since then, the dam's water level is kept at a maximum of 70% of its capacity to prevent both an overflow and an uncontrolled outflow through fully opened sluices.

Etymology
The name Hardap derives from the Nama word meaning nipple or wart, which is how the surrounding area of low conical-shaped hills appeared to the early inhabitants. There are fishing spots at various points along the northern shore of the lake. Permits, and a map of permitted fishing areas, are available from the resort office, or from the magistrate's office in Mariental.

Flora and fauna
The area is home to the black rhino, gemsbok, Hartmann's zebra, kudu, ostrich, springbok and steenbok. There is also a large variety of bird species can be observed in and around the dam. Great White Pelican, cormorant, darter and spoonbill can be seen on the lake itself, as well as fish eagle and a small number of osprey.

The vegetation in the area is classified as dwarf shrub savanna. The following trees occur: camel thorn, wild green-hair tree and buffalo thorn.

Tourism
After a four-year period of renovation the dam's recreational sites have been reopened in 2016. Activities at the dam include swimming, fishing, and bird watching. There is a restaurant and a shop.

Date palm farm in Mariental, Namibia, southern Africa aerial view & devastating fire

Aerial video of Edel palm dates farm in Mariental in southern Namibia, southern Africa. The farm was damaged by fire in 2022.

#PalmTreeFarm #Namibia #SafariAfrica

Mariental:

The abandoned Edel Palm Dates Farm just south of Mariental town went up in flames on 30 September 2022.

Crime investigations coordinator for the Hardap Region, deputy commissioner Eric Clay, confirmed the incident.

“At this stage, the cause of the fire is still unknown,” he said.

The farm is owned by Octant Investment and was abandoned by the owners, Somali national Abdulkadir Saleh and his local joint venture partner, Swapo Ndume who are now engaged in a legal dispute.

The farm was one of the country's prime date exporters to the Middle East.

Marshall Ranges Sean Naude said little could be done to salvage the trees.

“The only thing that could be done was to cordon off the area, allowing it to burn itself up while making sure the fire did not spread further. It's a tragedy and major loss,” he said.

Mariental municipality firefighters were on the scene to protect all nearby exposures and adjacent properties.

2020:
Mariental locals seem to have found use of the abandoned Edel Dates Farm as they are now harvesting the dates from the farm for free and selling them on the streets.

The farm which was one of the country’s prime date exporter is owned by Octant Investment Pty and has been closed since the owners abandoned the project and closed the farm in July 2019.

The business was an employment source to 20 permanent workers and about 100 seasonal employees before it closed.

According to the caretaker at the farm, Linus Hitewa, the company closed down because of the drop in the water level in the Hardap Dam and the owners gave locals permission to collect and consume the dates.

“For now, the company is closed because there is not enough water in the dam. People from the location can eat the dates; we have permitted them to eat the dates,” he said.

However, according to various sources, the date farm, which was considered one of the biggest date farms in the region, closed because of the ongoing legal dispute between the two owners of Octant investments and SOMNAM Investment.

“I come here to collect dates which I can sell to get an income. We do not always fill buckets like today. Sometimes we only fill up plastic bags to sell in town,” said Ivan Skrywer, a community member who has been coming to the farm daily since December to collect dates and sell on the local streets.

Also, Julien Pienaar and Christina Saal heard about the farm from their friends in the location.

“Some people come here to collect dates, some sell and others eat. They are even dry, some are not ripe yet. This is my first time here and I do not sell the dates, I just eat them,” said Saal.

Pienaar, who was accompanied by her three young children, also said it was her first time at the farm and that she went to the farm to collect dates for her family to eat.

The farm caretaker, however, expressed disappointment with some locals who come to the farm under the pretext of collecting dates, only to steal and vandalise the property.

“During the week, it is quiet, but during the weekend the entire location comes here to collect dates and I am advising them to stop stealing the things on the property.

He said the only problem he has observed is the theft. “But if they come here to eat, we don’t have a problem. They should stop stealing and damaging the things belonging to the company,” Hitewa warned.

The company used to export dates mostly to the United Arab Emirates and South Africa and also sold some locally.

Swakopmund, Namibia, was founded two years later than Windhoek, in 1892, by Captain Curt von Francois as the main harbour of German South West Africa. Increased traffic between Germany and its colony necessitated establishing of own port as Walvis Bay, located 33 kilometres south, was already in British possession. The choice fell on Swakopmund where water could be found and because other sites checked (including Cape Cross) were unsuitable.

Name. The majority of towns and villages in Namibia have grown out of indigenous settlements and very often were located close to sources of water. Names of places given by original inhabitants were very descriptive and in many cases those names were retained by European settles who sometimes simplified pronunciations of the names.

Nama word ''Tsoakhaub'' can be translated as ''excrement opening'' which was offensive but accurate description of the waters of Swakop River at the time of coming down in floods carrying masses of mud, sand, pieces of vegetation and animal corpses. The masses of dirty and muddy water were emptied into the ocean and the indigenous name described it very well.

The Nama name was changed to ''Swachaub'' and with proclamation of Swakopmund as independent district in 1896 the present way of writing came into use.

Beautiful Namibian Road Trip - C14 Walvis Bay to Sesriem camps

Each road trip in Namibia is an adventure.
With wide open spaces, and epic landscapes, half the fun of being in Namibia is the awesome road trips.

From our home in Walvis Bay, we kicked off to go see the water in Sossusvlei. It's only 360 kilometers to the Sesriem campsites from Walvis Bay, but as large sections of the road is a little tricky to navigate, it takes much longer than the 4 hours that Google says it should take.

Close to Walvis Bay the tarred road gives way to salt roads. Close to the coast, the gravel roads heal themselves from the moisture in the air. Past Vogelvederberg the road gets the usual corrugation that is common in Namibia.

Due to international travel restrictions, there are not so many people on the road, and the graders were finally able to catch up a little. We enjoyed the relative smoothness of the road, as we remember some other occasions that were much, much worse.

The landscapes in this video are quite varied, with the change in landscape sometimes just popping up as we crest a hill, or come around a bend.

The Kuiseb river was in flood when we crossed it. Not massively, but enough for us to stop and enjoy the cool water. Most of the rivers in Namibia are normally dry, and only flowing after a good rain in their catchment area. Through the millennia, these rivers have carved gorgeous canyons in the landscape.

After the canyons, the landscape changes color and texture to the orange sands still devoid of any vegetation. We found an Oryx next to the road that is quite skinny. At least it was heading in the right direction, as just around the corner the vegetation started getting more and more green from the recent rainfall.

Solitaire is the only fuel station for the area, and it's usually a bustling hive of activity. Also due to the lack of tourists, only the pumps were operating, and all the shops and even the lodge here was closed.

We managed to get a flat on the road between Solitaire and Sesriem. To avoid being stranded next to the road, it's recommended to carry at least two spare tires. We carry three because the caravan has the same size tire as the Cruiser.

Agama lodge is about an hour's drive from the gate to the Sesriem camp sites and where the road to Sossusvlei begins. They agreed to pay for the fuel for this trip in return for an ad of their lovely place. With plenty of beautiful rooms, each built to take advantage of the clear skies and low light pollution to make stargazing a treat. Prices are very reasonable too.
You can see the produced video here:

Not long after cruising past Agama, we got to the Sesriem campsites. The next morning we kicked off to go film the waters at Sossusvlei. The first video for it is here:
