Here is another episode of our Top Things to do in Auckland during summer vlog series. In this episode we will tour you around the Manukau Heads Light house.
Hi guys, welcome back to our channel! If you are looking for another summer activity idea then you came to the right channel. Equally, if you are feeling the travel bug then you still came to the right place as we will tour you around New Zealand. In this episode, we are featuring the Manukau Heads lighthouse, one of the only few publicly accessible where you can climb up and see the views.
The Manukau Heads Lighthouse is about 1 hour 45 minutes drive from Auckland CBD and is located at the tip of Awhitu Peninsula on the south side of the Manukau Heads of Auckland New Zealand. It's open everyday except Christmas day from 9am to 5pm and the entrance fee is by donation.
In our video we will talk about the history of the lighthouse, share with you what else you can see here and the amazing views you will see. Top 18 Auckland attractions is the travel video we've been asked for many times. Lots of people travel to New Zealand and spend time in Auckland, so they want to know what to do and where to go. We got you covered with this 2023 travel video providing up-to-date travel information about top Auckland attractions.
Auckland is not only the biggest city in New Zealand with the busiest airport. This is also a very beautiful region (and a huge one) with so many incredible tourist attractions. And they are extremely diverse. You can enjoy the architecture of the city centre while walking the streets or having coffee at one of the local cafes. Or admire the view from the tallest building in New Zealand - Sky Tower. Explore Auckland's hidden gems like Ponsonby, Silo Park and Domain Wintergardens or pick one of the touristic must-haves including Mount Eden, Viaduct Harbour or Giapo. If you have more time, there is plenty to do outside Auckland city - fantastic black sand beaches (Piha, Anawhata or Muriwai), waterfalls (Hunua) or lighthouses (Manukau Heads).
Creating this Top 18 Auckland Attractions list was quite a challenging task. It took us many visits to Auckland during the last 3 years to film this content and combine it into this video. Manukau Heads Lighthouse │ Auckland, New Zealand ????????????
If you want to escape the city for a relaxing day out without having to drive for hours, then bump Manukau Heads to the top of your ‘must visit’ list. For a place with such rich history, character and natural beauty, it’s surprisingly still unknown to many Aucklanders.
The views as you drive along Awhitu Peninsula are truly magnificent, with the Manukau Heads Lighthouse sitting proudly at the very tip. This lighthouse is particularly special as it’s one of only a few in New Zealand you can actually climb to the top of.
Inside, we take a look at the pieces of artwork and wall displays telling the story of the HMS Orpheus, which ran aground in 1863 as it approached Manukau Harbour, tragically killing 189 people. From the balcony at the top, we are welcomed by beautiful views of the harbour. The sea is calm and it’s hard to believe that New Zealand’s worst maritime disaster happened on a peaceful day like this. If you look south on a fine day you can see for miles across the Tasman Sea. Directly across from the lighthouse looking north are the stunning Waitakere Ranges and the last stretch of Whatipu Beach.
The gates to the lighthouse are open from 9am to 5pm daily and while there’s no set charge, a donation is greatly appreciated to ensure the lighthouse is around for many years to come.

Auckland is a modern cosmopolitan city with a population of 1.45 million people — roughly one third of New Zealand's entire population reside in Auckland. In the centre, the iconic Sky Tower has views of Viaduct Harbour, which is full of superyachts and lined with bars and cafes. Auckland Domain, the city’s oldest park, is based around an extinct volcano and home to the formal Wintergardens. Near Downtown, Mission Bay Beach has a seaside promenade.
The city and suburbs have developed within the same time frame and similar urban patterns as California (Los Angeles and Auckland have shared urban planning designs and are sister cities). Today the city and suburbs sprawl over a large urban area, hemmed to the east and west by two large harbours (Waitemata and Manukau) and ocean (Pacific Ocean and Tasman Sea) beyond.
Auckland is in a temperate climate zone and does not experience hot or cold extremes at any time of year. The summer months are December to March. The sun is very strong during this time and it is advisable to use sunscreen and cover skin from prolonged exposure. April to June brings cooler temperatures and rain toward the end of June which persists through winter until September and October.
If you want to explore Auckland's more distant suburbs, it's possible to take a service from the CBD to a hub where information and further connections are available. Hubs are located in larger suburban centres - retail malls, entertainment facilities and (depending on destination) beaches are never far away. The bigger hubs are (buses only unless otherwise indicated):
