???????? Mantua (Italy): travel documentary

#Mantua #Italy #Travel

We continue exploring the most beautiful cities of Northern Italy: today we are in Mantua. Mantua was one of the most prominent cities in Europe for arts and culture during the Renaissance. During medieval times, Mantua was an independent city ruled by the Canossa family, which built a number of churches and monasteries. But it’s under the Gonzaga family, who ruled for 400 years, that the city became one of the most important artistic centres of the entire Europe. The Palazzo Ducale is a proper city within the city. The palace is formed by numerous buildings and is one of the largest in Europe, in Italy, is second only to the Vatican. Each Gonzaga duke had the habit of expanding, redecorating and adding new buildings to the palace. The bridal chamber - or Camera degli Sposi - located in the Palazzo Ducale and painted by Andrea Mantegna, is the highlight of any visit to Mantua

MANTOVA - Italy ( 2023 )

Mantua is a province in the Lombardy region of Northern Italy. Its capital is the city of Mantua. It is bordered to the north-east by the Province of Verona, to the east by that of Rovigo, to the south by those of Ferrara, Modena, Reggio Emilia and Parma, to the west by the Province of Cremona and to the north-west by that of Brescia.

Founded in the tenth century BC on the plain formed by meanders of the River Mincio, Mantua became an Etruscan town and important trading post for pottery and agricultural products. Despite its defensible position, it was unable to withstand the Celtic invaders in the sixth and fifth centuries BC who overwhelmed it, and the whole area was later conquered by the Romans.

By the fifth century AD, the Western Roman Empire was collapsing. Mantua was overrun by a series of invaders, including the Visigoths, Vandals, and Ostrogoths. After 568 the Lombards seized control of the part of northern Italy which is now known as Lombardy and included Mantua.[1]

The current administrative boundaries of the province have deep historical roots, corresponding largely to the Duchy of Mantua, which was a fief of the Holy Roman Empire. The Napoleonic Department of the Mincio became the Province of Mantua at the birth of the Kingdom of Lombardy–Venetia in 1815. Following the Battle of Solferino on 24 June 1859, Franco-Piedmontese troops conquered Lombardy up to the right bank of the Mincio, and the resulting Armistice of Villafranca of 11 June 1859 between France and Austria called for the new provincial boundaries, splitting in two the part of the previous Province of Mantova that was crossed by the new international border. The new provincial boundaries came into effect after laws enacted in 1868. The coat of arms of the province, containing the symbols of Mantua, Bozzolo and Castiglione delle Stiviere, embodies the union of those three areas and was adopted in place of the previous one.

The Province of Mantua is bounded by several rivers. To the west, the River Oglio provides the border with the Province of Cremona. To the south it is bounded by the River Po, on the other side of which are the provinces of Ferrara, Modena, Reggio Emilia and Parma. To the east the River Mincio provides the border with the Province of Verona and the Province of Rovigo, and to the northwest lies the Province of Brescia. The total area of the province is 2,340 square kilometres (900 sq mi).[ The River Po is subject to flooding and much of the bank is raised by levees.

There are a number of nature reserves and protected areas in the province. The Parco regionale del Mincio was established on 8 September 1984 with an area of approximately 16,000 hectares. It includes several nature reserves and has a range of habitats including moraines, hills, plains, and the meandering riverbeds in the complex of lakes of Mantua. Birds found in the park include storks, herons, purple herons, egrets, night herons, kingfishers, bee-eaters, coots, moorhens, peregrine falcons, hawks, great crested grebe and black kite.

The Parco dell'Oglio Sud is another regional park that lies on the boundary of the province with the province of Cremona. It was established in 1988 and has an area of about 12,800 hectares. It is a river park that runs along the stretch of the river Oglio which forms the boundary. It lies to the south of Lake Iseo and the administrative centre is at Calvatone. Birds present in this park include great egret, grey heron, Montagu's harrier, Eurasian scops owl, bearded reedling, woodcock, barred warbler, crested lark, sedge warbler, moustached warbler, little egret, Eurasian hobby and ferruginous duck.

The Riserva naturale Bosco Fontana is a state nature reserve with an area of about 23,300 hectares. It is a wooded area that is a remnant of the natural forests that covered the Po valley in ancient times. It is a dense marshy forest composed mainly of Turkey oaks, pedunculate oaks, hornbeams, limes, poplars, elms and alders, which are accompanied by numerous species of shrubby undergrowth. There are glades with abundant wildflowers and fungi flourish among the trees, an important factor being the richness of the groundwater. Among the mammals found in the reserve are the least weasel, beech marten and European polecat, and the birds include the common buzzard, the great spotted woodpecker and the Eurasian wryneck.

Mantua bike tour: the Walls of Bozzolo | Italia Slow Tour

[ ENG ] Bozzolo (Mantua) is still enclosed by its ancient Walls, built by Julius Caesar and Scipione... They were two members of the Gonzaga Family, not the Roman homonyms! A Part of the Walls was renovated in the 70's but other parts were left to decay; that's why today the municipality and the realm of Gonzaga want to restore them, while keeping the ancient look.

Monument to Virgil, Piazza Virgiliana, Mantua, Lombardy, Italy, Europe

Piazza Virgiliana is a large green area of the city of Mantua, commissioned in 1797 by the French General de Miollis in order to honor the Roman poet Virgil. In Piazza Virgiliana first monument to Virgil was raised at the initiative of General De Miollis who inaugurated March 21, 1801. It consisted of a tall column on top of which was placed a bronze bust of the poet. Its location was at the center of the square Virgiliana as desired by the project architect Pozzo. Round the city under Austrian rule, in order to make possible the military exercises, the column was translocated to the edge, towards Lake Mezzo in the place where there is a monument that currently exists. Finally, in 1821, the column was demolished Virgil to make room Amphitheatre Virgilian designed by architect Joseph Mantua cantons. The bust of Virgil was moved to adorn the Town Hall. The economist and senator of the Kingdom of Italy Giovanni Arrivabene, in 1877, gave impetus to the establishment of a committee to celebrate the upcoming one thousand nine-hundredth anniversary of the death of Virgil. From this association was born the idea to erect a new monument. The Committee, which quote to collect 150,000 pounds in 1883 picked up subscriptions for 26,000 pounds, a figure that enough away in time the initial purpose. Nevertheless, long struggled on the site of construction, until the choice fell on Piazza Virgiliana. In 1919 the amphitheater century that had supplanted the column designed by Paolo Pozzo, was demolished and the space freed the current monument was built in Carrara marble designed by Luca Beltrami on top of which is placed a large bronze statue of work Milanese sculptor Emilio Quadrelli (1863-1925). Sabbioneta was founded by Vespasiano I Gonzaga in the late 16th century along the ancient Roman Via Vitelliana, on a sandy bank of the Po (whence the name, meaning Sandy in Italian; he was its first duke, using it as a personal fortress and residence. It was also during this period that it became a minor musical centre; composers such as Benedetto Pallavicino were employed here by Vespasiano Gonzaga, prior to his moving to the main Gonzaga city of Mantua.

#italy #travel #travelguide
Whoa, it has been a minute guys, but today I come back with a video about Exploring Italy, and in this video, I will be mentioning 12 best places to visit in Italy; both touristy and less touristy spots. I had initially wanted to add tips to know before travelling to Italy but looks like I forgot. Here they are!

The best time to visit Italy is in the spring or fall, when the weather is mild. Italy is also a relatively expensive country to visit, so be sure to budget accordingly. Also, Italians tend to dress more conservatively than Americans, so be sure to pack accordingly. To make you trip much easier, you can learn a few basic Italian phrases before you go. This will help you foster great interactions with the locals, and also make your experience worth it!
Also, be sure to try all the delicious food and wine that Italy has to offer aka pizza, pasta, gelato and more Gelato! I am planning an in depth tips to know before traveling to Italy video, So keep a look out for that ????

I truly hope you enjoyed this video : )

I love love! Watching travel videos and spend majority of my time apart from school, searching for travel places and I decided, why not share my finds

It is one person, behind this channel. ME! I do the research, script and edit. I just use ‘we’ because it sounds fancy ˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶

I use an AI cloned voice with a little bit of me because I don’t like the sound of my voice especially on this channel. Hope that doesn’t bother you and that you can be respectful of my choice.
