Ecuador is one of the most diverse countries in the world though it's comparably tiny. Beside the Galapagos Islands (which is the #1 tourist destination in Ecuador) the country has a lot more to offer, therefore I focussed on La Sierra in this video which is a paradise for landscape lovers and outdoor adventurers.
Another reason to visit the Andean region is that you have the chance to dive into the local culture and get a real feeling of Ecuador. The places to see in Ecuador I focussed on in this short video are the result of my own travels along the center from north to south and are easily doable in 2 weeks time.

I wanted to share this video because when I asked about huecas in Manta, most foreigners didn't have suggestions for me. I'm so lucky in Cuenca that there's a strong culture of huecas, traditional hole in the wall restaurants that serve authentic food at great prices.
But it's not just about being cheap, at these places you'll see manual labourers next to people in expensive suits. It's all about the food and of course the aji.
But I discovered Manta has this culture as well, and thankfully Andres asked Ecuadorians for their suggestions we had amazing food in Manta

Manta, también conocida como San Pablo de Manta, es una ciudad ecuatoriana; cabecera cantonal del Cantón Manta, así como la urbe más grande y poblada de la Provincia de Manabí. Se localiza en una bahía, que le ha dado la característica de puerto internacional en la costa del océano Pacífico, al centro de la región litoral del Ecuador, en los flancos externos de la cordillera occidental de los Andes, a 6 msnm y con un clima seco tropical de 23°C en promedio.
Es llamada La Puerta del Pacífico por ser uno de los principales puertos para la economía ecuatoriana. En el censo de 2010 tenía una población de 217.553 habitantes, lo que la convierte en la séptima ciudad más poblada del país. La ciudad es el núcleo del área metropolitana de Manabí Centro, junto con la capital provincial, Portoviejo; la conurbación está constituida además por ciudades y parroquias rurales cercanas. El conglomerado alberga a 651.053 habitantes, y ocupa la cuarta posición entre las conurbaciones del Ecuador.
Se dice que Manta fue fundada en 1534 por Francisco Pacheco, pero es a inicios del siglo XX, debido a su ubicación geográfica, que la posicionó como uno de los principales puertos del país, cuando presenta un acelerado crecimiento demográfico hasta establecer un gran poblado urbano, que sería posteriormente, uno de los principales núcleos urbanos de la nación. Es uno de los más importantes centros administrativos, económicos, financieros y comerciales del Ecuador. Las actividades principales de la ciudad son el comercio y la industria pesquera, donde sobresale la pesca del atún. También destacan empresas de aceites vegetales y maquiladoras.

We stayed overnight in the Pacoche Lodge & Reserve and had an amazing but brief time exploring the area and Ligüiqui Beach.

Now, this whole region is very interesting because actually has two bio regions overlap two very important bio regions for endemic plants and animals.
And so you have the Choco bio region which we saw in Mindo and Mashpi that starts in Panama comes through Colombia down through to northern Ecuador and then you have the Tumbesina which starts in northern Chile comes up through Peru and into Ecuador, so they actually overlap here. So the Tumbesina is very arid.
You've got the Atacama Desert in Northern Chile. And then coming down the Choco Bio Region very lush like a rainforest type thing. And so it creates this unique atmosphere here. It's called a semi arid forest. There are not a lot of them. And actually they are in danger, which is why we have the reserve here at Pacoche.
