10 Most Miserable Towns in the UK

What are the most miserable towns in the United Kingdom? Many of the towns in the United Kingdom are not doing too badly in terms of basic amenities. The quality of life in those towns is higher even than in places recognized as cities in other countries. Still, it can’t be said that all those towns are having it equally. Assessing the standard of living and quality of life in the UK as a whole, we can describe certain towns in the United Kingdom as miserable. Granted, those towns are not inherently terrible. Yet, the situation there is not acceptable in the light of what we see in other villages, towns, and cities, in the UK. In this video, we shall be discussing the 10 most miserable towns in the UK.
10. Cumbernauld, Scotland
We will start our discussion with a town in Scotland. To give you a hint; this is the first of the three Scottish towns on this list of the 10 most miserable towns in the UK. We are talking about Cumbernauld, a large town in North Lanarkshire with an area of 8.3 square miles or 21.5 square kilometers. Under normal circumstances, it should be a city because of its city-like huge population of 51,000.
It has not shed that horrible description as “Scotland’s most dismal town.” Truly speaking, this town is lacking in anything of the good things you would find in Glasgow or Edinburgh. The center of Cumbernauld has been described as the “Kabul of the North.” This says it all. Whatever you know about Kabul has its miniature in this miserable town.
9. Grimsby, England
The first of the 5 cities in England on this list is Grimsby. Maybe we should stop calling it Great Grimsby. If it were great indeed, this port town and the North East Lincolnshire administrative center on the south bank of the Humber Estuary would have all amenities that would make it rank among the best. But the comments from its residents and one-time visitors indicated that life is miserable in this place that has been voted several times as one of the worst places to live in England.
Therefore, the town of around 100,000 residents is one of the most miserable towns in the UK. Its entire area of 88 square miles (or 230 square kilometers) has been ranked the 18th worst place to live a while ago.
8. Airdrie, Scotland
Back in Scotland; we are now examining Airdrie, a town in North Lanarkshire. It also is one of the most miserable towns in the UK. The town on a plateau with an elevation of 400 feet or 130 meters above sea level is about 12 miles (or 19 kilometers) east of Glasgow city center. During its industrial heyday in the 19th century, coal mining and cotton milling were the major industries, no one could then think of this former industrial town as miserable.
However, the exit of those industries has made life there miserable to extent of being branded the most dismal town in the UK. The PR manager for the town admits it deserves its grim reputation as the worst in Scotland. The town is boring and the buildings are ugly.

7 London Markets to Visit (you never heard of) | Ad | Love and London

Borough Market is London’s most famous market, and yes it’s fantastic and has so much history, but there are plenty of other markets in London that locals love and that are just as great (and less crowded!) In this video I’m sharing eight Londoner-loved markets that are worth a visit to, whether it’s your first time visiting London or you’ve been here many times before.

Many of these London markets are hidden gems that tourists don’t usually read about. Some of them are centrally located to some of the major London attractions, but many of them require you to venture off the boring, beaten path, because well, that’s where you always find the best stuff when you travel. A few of these London markets have special places in my heart, and I think you’ll find one for yourself too.

This video is sponsored by Bimble, a new app that is great for saving your favourite places, and the gems you want to go to as you think about your post-lockdown travel plans. It’s really easy to use and you can share your lists with your travel buddies or friends.
I’ve made a Bimble list with all of the London markets mentioned in this video, so you always have them and you can easily save your favourites to your own list.

HOLTBY: York Parish #10 of 31

YORK PARISH #10: HOLTBY

Holtby, in the City of York, lies just off the A166, 5 miles north east of the city centre. The road follows the crest of a prominent ridge, part of the York Terminal Moraine.

Holtby was likely settled thanks it being on that high ground, which was once surrounded by wetlands. There has been a human settlement here for centuries, evidenced in many ways

There’s an Iron Age barrow in fields to the north which suggests pre-Roman inhabitants. The name is of Scandinavian origin – it literally means Coppice village. That tells us the Vikings were present here

In the Domesday Book its recorded as Boltbei. Farming used to be a major part of life in the village. It has around 50 houses, most of which have generous gardens, ranging from the traditional cottage style to expansive lawns.

Its not inaccurate to say that everywhere you look there’s greenery. Trees, hedges and natural verges soften the brickwork of the cottages here

I think the village is best summed up by a line in a document I found called the Holtby Village Design Statement, which was produced by the very people who live here. It simply says:

“We the people of Holtby think our village is a very special place. It’s a typical Yorkshire village, but it also has something unique about it”. After walking around this one, I find it hard to disagree with that

This is Holtby folks, let’s get walking!

Five Frontiers : River Tees : Part 1 Viking Vale and Scottish Frontier

Exploring the Viking and Scottish influenced history of the valley of the River Tees which forms one of the five frontiers of North East England. The Tees, with its splendid scenery and beautiful waterfalls was the northern frontier of the Vikings in North East England and on at least two occasions effectively served as the Scottish border. Perhaps not surprising given that this valley was the ancestral home of the Bruces and the Baliols who between them produced four Scottish kings.

[4K] Driving Woodinville - Washington USA

Woodinville is a city in King County, Washington, United States. It is not a part of the Seattle metropolitan area. There is also a much larger population with Woodinville mailing addresses in adjacent unincorporated areas of King (Cottage Lake) and Snohomish (Maltby) counties. Woodinville has waterfront parks on the Sammamish River, sweeping winery and brewery grounds, and densely wooded areas.

Geography
It is located in northern King County east of the city of Bothell at approximately 47°45'9 North, 122°9'21 West (47.752452, -122.155949).[7]

The United States Postal Service identifies those homes in the 98072 and 98077 zip codes as being within Woodinville, though those zip codes exceed the city limits of Woodinville. The 98072 zip code extends north into unincorporated Snohomish County and east of the city limits. The 98077 zip code falls entirely outside the city limits of Woodinville to the east, though the postal service still identifies it as Woodinville, WA.

Deptford London Walking Tour - Salty Saucey Sailor's History Romp

Deptford has now become one of my favourite London walking tours! It was established as a royal naval dockyard by King Henry VIII and has seen innumerable voyages of discovery set sail over the last 350 years.
Walk the streets with Joolz where sailors trod. Walk in the footsteps of Sir Francis Drake, Sir Walter Raleigh and Queen Elizabeth I!
See where the Jolly Roger pirate flag was born and where the ancient mariner is buried alongside Christopher Marlowe.
Samuel Pepys being unfaithful to his wife and the Czar of Russia, Peter the Great, being wheeled around a huge garden in a wheelbarrow!
There's also Dire Straits and Ha'penny Hatch, a beautiful piece of Victorian engineering.
Oh, and don't forget the usual helping of Mutiny on the Bounty and Mydiddee one of the first Tahitians to visit England.
See the old victualling yard and the naval officers' quarters.
Deptford is a terrific place for a walking tour with a salty sailor's theme!

Rotherham Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in South Yorkshire, around 6 miles northeast of Sheffield, is the town of Rotherham.

Geographically Rotherham lies at the confluence of the River Don and River Rother, the latter being the origin of the town's name.

The town's centrepiece, All Saints' Church, otherwise known as Rotherham Minster, was built in the 14th century. The tower was added in the 15th century, as was the chapel, built under orders from Rotherham-born Archbishop of York, Thomas de Rotherham, who also founded an ecclesiastical college in the town.

Industry in Rotherham predates the Industrial Revolution. In the 1750s Rotherham established both its first glass works and its first ironworks. Both industries prospered for centuries to come, with Rotherham receiving a healthy supply of coal for its foundries from nearby Doncaster, transported via the River Don. The town's ironworks industry declined in the 1970s when Rotherham-based Park Gate Iron and Steel Company was closed.

Another industry commonly associated with Rotherham is flour milling, hence the town's football club, Rotherham United, goes by the nickname The Millers.

Rotherham is the birthplace of none other than TV legends, the Chuckle Brothers.

Hello DONCASTER people!

It's been a while I know, but finally the DONCASTER ROUND-UP video is here!

Using information that's been sent to me by all you lovely people out there, this is the video that catches all those comments and anecdotes and whatever else you wanted me to talk about, that I either missed or got wrong in the 43 parishes of DONCASTER!

In alphabetical order, I go through the borough, detailing anything and everything you guys wanted me to! I love putting your areas on display and I've enjoyed every single one of the Doncaster parishes, they're all unique in their own way!

It's taken me six months to get through the entire district. It is such a varied part of the country, taking in things like coal mines, open farmland, waterways, some amazing buildings, some excellent nuggets of history and above all some awesome people! Thank you for letting me put your areas on display, and making Doncaster stand out!

Cheers all, enjoy the round up and I'll see you down the road.

Coal Trains in South Yorkshire - Part 1 (Maltby Colliery)

Up until closure in 2013, Maltby Main Colliery near Rotherham was one of several South Yorkshire pits connected to the rail network. A huge flow of coal traffic to and from the mines supplied the coal-fired power stations around Britain. This short video filmed in 1992, shows this traffic with BR Class 58s and Class 56 locos handling the majority of the traffic in and out of the mines.
