Madeira island in the Atlantic. This is how it is in January. Filmed by me 06-07.01.2021. Madeira was voted the top island destination in Europe and in the world by World Travel Awards in 2020. It is absolutely unique. I recommend to visit it in the spring or autumn as it rains a lot in January.

It makes a perfect day trip from Funchal and should definitely be on your list of top 10 things to do in Madeira. It's famous for having a sandy beach and is arguably the best beach in Madeira. Machico's beach had good facilities for swimming and sunbathing, and airbnb in Machico is easy to find.

Machico is a lovely beach town, containing the church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Our Lady of the Conception). Machico is a good base for ‘levada’ walks and is also one of the closest seaside towns to Madeira airport.

Machico, Madeira's second-largest city, is a coastal beach resort nestled within lush mountains and natural wonders. MADEIRA officially the Autonomous Region of Madeira, is one of two autonomous regions of Portugal, the other being the Azores. It is an archipelago situated in the North Atlantic Ocean, in a region known as Macaronesia, just under 400 kilometers (250 mi) to the north of the Canary Islands and 520 kilometers (320 mi) west of the Kingdom of Morocco. Madeira is geologically located on the African Tectonic Plate, notwithstanding being culturally, sociologically, economically, and politically European as is its southern archipelago neighbor. Its population was 251,060 in 2021. The capital of Madeira is Funchal, which is located on the main island's south coast.

Madeira, originally uninhabited, was claimed by Portuguese sailors in the service of Prince Henry the Navigator in 1419 and settled after 1420. The archipelago is considered to be the first territorial discovery of the exploratory period of the Age of Discovery.

Sovereign state: Portugal.
Discovery: 1418-1419.
Settlement: 1425.

MACHICO is a municipality, parish, and city in the southeast part of the island of Madeira, in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. The easternmost municipality on the island, it is also the third-most populous area with a population of 21,828 in 2011. The town, proper, had a population of 10,894 in 2001.

CABO GIRÃO is a lofty sea cliff located along the southern coast of Madeira. Cabo Girão is a tourist lookout point, with up to 1800 visitors a day. The location is also a common starting point for hikers.

Elevation: 580 m (1,900 ft).
