The Chowta dynasty was a Digambara Jain dynasty that ruled parts of the Tulu Nadu region during the 12th – 18th centuries
The Chowtas had migrated from Gujarat in probably the 12th century. The succession to the throne was as per the Bunt custom of matrilineal inheritance (Aliyasantana). Their kingdom was very small, containing around only 200 villages, but the land was very fertile. They initially ruled from their capital at Ullal, which was a very prosperous city and busy centre of trade The first known king of the Dynasty was Tirumalaraya Chowta I (1160 – 1179). His successor, Channaraya Chowta I (reign 1179 – 1219), moved it inland to the city of Puthige. The principality of Chowta split in 1544, with two separate capitals, one at Ullal, under the renowned Queen Abbakka Chowta, and another at Puttige.
The Ullal branch seems to have become extinct and c. 1603, the Chowta moved their capital to Moodabidri. In succeeding years Chowta power had greatly diminished due to invasions by Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan with whom they signed treaties. Chandrasekhara Chikkaraya Chowta V was the last Chowta king who had some authority. He reigned from 1783 to 1822. Following the conquest of South Canara by the British the Chowtas lost all their power except that they received a small pension from the then government. Descendants of the chowta rulers still survive and inhabit the Chowtara Aramane (Chowta Palace) of Moodabidri, which is known for its ornate carvings such as the Nava Nari Kunjara (Nine Damsel Elephant) and Pancha Nari thuraga (Five Damsel Horse)

Aliyasantana (sister's son lineage) was a matrilineal system of inheritance practiced by Tuluva community in the Tulunad region Karnataka, India.[1] It is similar to the Marumakkathayam system of Malabar.

The temple town is also popularly known as Jain Kashi’ of India since it is dotted with many Jain temples.

Savira kamba Basadi, Moodbidri

Moodbidri, is a small town located at a distance of 35 km north-east of Mangalore in Dakshina Kannada district. Moodbidri is known as the 'Jain Kashi' of South India and it is an ancient center of Jain learning.
Moodbidri houses 18 Jain temples (basadis). The oldest of them is the 15th century Chandranatha Basadi, which is also known as the 1000 (Thousand) Pillars temple or 'Savira Kambada basadi'.
This is a large granite temple built in 1430 A.D. The main entrance of the thousand pillar temple, which faces the east, opens onto a wonderful 15 meter tall monolithic pillar called Mahastamba in front of the doorway.

The 2.5 meter tall bronze idol of Lord Chandranatha Swami in the sanctum hall is considered to be very sacred. The pillars of this basadi are decorated with carvings typical of Vijayanagara style.
The temple boasts of a valuable collection of jewel-encrusted metallic images of Jain tirthankaras, and superb monolithic columns in the Jain tradition, each with a different carving.

The Jain Mutt near the main temple entrance has a library protecting some beautiful 12th and 13th century palm leaf manuscripts.

One hour away from Mangalore near Moodabidri Konaje kallu is a great place for a short hike. A Shiva temple is nestled in caves carved out of a large granite monolith. The temple is about 45 minutes hike from the parking spot. The hike from the temple to the peak is a little treacherous and takes another 30 minutes. The views from the top is breathtaking . A great place for a weekend getaway, must see place near Mangalore if want something more than temples and beaches.

sri mahalingeshwara swamy temple puttur movie 2

In the long past, three old and very learned Shaiva-cult Brahmins were going through the southern part of India. Worshipping a Shiva Linga which they got from the Hindu holy ‘ Kshetra of Kashi ’. All the three were ardent devotees of Shiva. In their spiritual journey, one day they happened to arrive at a place called ‘Gayapada Kshetra’ now known as Uppinangady in Puttur Taluk, Dakshina Kannada.
At Uppinangady, one out of those three Brahmins, divided to move towards Puttur leaving behind the other two and according reached Puttur one evening having the ‘Shiva Ling’ with him. The Brahmins got up early in the next morning and after a holy bath went to the palace of the ‘Banga King ‘; who was ruling this part of the region the; for collecting flowers and other essential pooja materials for the worship of Shiva, that day, again, being a Monday, quite auspicious for the Lord. At that time the Banga King did not pay attention to the arrival of this Brahmin, as he was much worried about the labor-pain of his loving sister.
However, the minister of the Banga-King, looking at the Devine Brightness in the face of the Brahmin, made an appeal regarding the problem of the King and on that, the Brahmin worshipped the ‘ Linga and blessed the King’s sister assuring that she would deliver, safely a baby boy. Later to the astonishment of all, she gave birth to a child-a boy and a god fearing King, having felt very happy over the event thanked the Brahmin and arranged for the worship of the Lord.
Later on a particular day, the Brahmin, knowingly or otherwise, kept the ‘Shiva-Linga’ on hand, without a stand or seat, worshipped it and after the pooja, when he lifted the Linga from the land, in order to keep it again in the container box (samputa) it would not be detached from the surface of the earth. The Brahmin used all his force to lift the Linga, but in vain. He became very sad, but, perhaps it was the will of God, the Almighty that he remained, firmly, in the soil of Puttur thereafter, forever, blessing and being worshipped by his devotees. But before God’s will prevailed all human efforts were made to uproot the Shiva Ling- King’s army men applied force to their ultimate disappointment. Later King’s elephant was summoned to lift the linga. As the elephant was struggling hard, the linga grew in to huge proportions. (Mahalinga) shattering the elephant into pieces. The different body parts of the gigantic animal spread out in different direction hence, the place where its horn (Khombu) fell came to be called ‘Kombettu’, Kari fell ‘Kariyala, legs fell (kalu) ‘Karjala’, hand(Kai) fell ‘Kaipala’ tail fell ‘Beedimajalu’, head(Tale) fell ‘Taleppady’ and back (Beri) fell ‘ Beripadavu’. These are the place names noted and likewise called even today in the surroundings of Puttur. And since the elephant fell dead in to the temple tank, even to this day there is a strong belief that elephants cannot survive drinking the tank water.
