Basel City, Switzerland - a vibrant city famous for it's numerous museums, cultural activities, university, life sciences, chemical and pharmaceutical industries (Roche, Novartis etc.), banking center, zoo, cathedral, bridges, old town, rhine swimming, etc.
Basel, Switzerland 2023
Basel is a city in northwestern Switzerland on the river Rhine, at the tripoint of France, Germany, and Switzerland. Basel is Switzerland's third-most-populous city (after Zürich and Geneva), with 175,000 inhabitants within the city municipality limits, and 830,000 inhabitants in the Trinational Eurodistrict of Basel metropolitan area. The official language of Basel is (the Swiss variety of Standard) German, but the main spoken language is the local Basel German dialect.
Basel is commonly considered to be the cultural capital of Switzerland and the city is famous for its many museums, including the Kunstmuseum, which is the first collection of art accessible to the public in the world (1661) and the largest museum of art in Switzerland, the Fondation Beyeler (located in Riehen), the Museum Tinguely and the Museum of Contemporary Art, which is the first public museum of contemporary art in Europe. Forty museums are spread throughout the city-canton, making Basel one of the largest cultural centres in relation to its size and population in Europe.
The University of Basel, Switzerland's oldest university (founded in 1460), and the city's centuries-long commitment to humanism, have made Basel a safe haven at times of political unrest in other parts of Europe for such notable people as Erasmus of Rotterdam, the Holbein family, Friedrich Nietzsche, Carl Jung, and in the 20th century also Hermann Hesse and Karl Jaspers.
Basel was the seat of a Prince-Bishopric starting in the 11th century, and joined the Swiss Confederacy in 1501. The city has been a commercial hub and an important cultural centre since the Renaissance, and has emerged as a centre for the chemical and pharmaceutical industries in the 20th century. In 1897, Basel was chosen by Theodor Herzl as the location for the first World Zionist Congress, and altogether the congress was held there ten times over a time span of 50 years, more than in any other location. The city is also home to the world headquarters of the Bank for International Settlements. The name of the city is internationally known through institutions like the Basel Accords, Art Basel and FC Basel.
In 2019 Basel was ranked the tenth most liveable city in the world by Mercer.[

PARK IM GRÜNE
The Park in Grünen is a well-loved recreational area on the edge of the city. The asphalted paths are enjoyed by walkers, skaters and bicycle riders and there are also sports facilities, playgrounds and wonderful green spaces.
The park, which was formerly known as Grün 80, was once the site of the summer house of Basel philanthropist Christoph Merian. Today the park is a popular excursion destination with a large pond, minigolf course, cafeteria, restaurant, children's playground and small shop.

★ 4K ????????Mainline cab ride in a 60 year old diesel, Münchenstein - Birsfelden Hafen [06.2020]
Welcome to another video. This time we accompany a diesel shunting veteran onto the mainline - a rare occurrence for any shunting locomotive, let alone an old one. The last time I saw a Bm 4/4 on a mainline was in 2014 while I was trainspotting:
The Bm 4/4 is a Swiss designed and built diesel electric which has been in service for 60 years now. They have only been recently been taken out of SBB Cargo service due to the arrival of newer locomotives, however in their last years, they were extensively used while the newer Am 843s sat around because they used less Diesel. Today there are still a handful in use with private companies and one example has been preserved in working order by SBB historic.
What intrigues me is how smooth they are to drive. You'd expect an aged locomotive to smoke a bit more, but these wonderful machines just keep doing their job reliably day in and day out.
So, we're heading to Münchenstein (a few stations from Basel on the line to Laufen) where some wagons were stored due to a capacity shortage in Birsfelden. We take them down to the harbour after the compulsory change of direction at the Basel marshalling yard. To get to the marshalling yard, we take a section of track that is rarely used, forming a direct connection from the Laufen valley (Laufental). This avoids us having to change directions at Basel SBB or Basel GB (freight yard).

The clicking noises while driving are the 2 Hasler speedometers in the cab, a fine feat of engineering found in most older locomotives in Europe. The other occasional rattling sound is the compressor.
