Aix-En-Provence, along with its numerous lanes, is one of the most beautiful cities in France. More than forty spectacular fountains help to cool down this ancient town in the hot months of summer when both foreign and French tourists visit the city. ‘Sur Le Pont D’Avignon’ are the words of the world famous French song that is familiar to both young and old alike. It is a song of dance on the bridge of the Pont Saint Bénézet but it is more likely that the people here once danced under the bridge as that is the location of its bars! For almost two thousand years an imposing Roman amphitheatre has dominated the city of Nîmes. It is the capital of the Departement Gard that is situated on the periphery of Provence. One of the most well preserved mediaeval fortifications in Europe surrounds the small town of Aigues-Mortes along the western periphery of the Camargue in the south of France. The town was established in 1240. From the city wall that is eleven metres high and six metres thick, there is a wonderful view across the rooftops of the impregnable city. With historic towns in which both the Romans and the Papacy felt at home, and with blossoming fields of lavender and ancient mountain villages, Provence is a land of sweet aromas and radiant light.

Aigues-Mortes Travel Guide
Travel video about destination Aigues-Mortes in France.
One of the most well preserved mediaeval fortifications in Europe surrounds the small town of Aigues-Mortes along the western periphery of the Camargue in the south of France. In the 13th century King Louis The Ninth was in search of a suitable location for a harbour on the Mediterranean that would serve both trade and military purposes. The Aigues-Mortes region was far from ideal as it was a swampland on which it was almost impossible to build, however, the orders of the King had to be obeyed! The seventeen hundred metre long town wall consists of ten gates and five defensive towers, a true masterpiece of mediaeval architecture. King Louis The Ninth and his army embarked from Aigues-Mortes to conquer the Holy Land for Christianity and in 1246, two years before the king's crusade to Egypt, the town's inhabitants began to prepare the machinery of war for this great adventure. However, the crusade was unsuccessful, the king having been taken prisoner. Even so, this was not to be his final military expedition and following his liberation and return to France he was encouraged to mount a new crusade in 1270, one which he did not survive. The harbour also suffered a terrible fate: it silted up! Thus the town's inhabitants experienced a difficult period in their history. But thanks to its splendid town wall Aigues-Mortes still manages to capture the atmosphere of the Middle Ages.

The marine cemetery of Sète , or Saint-Charles cemetery , is a marine cemetery , located in the city of Sète , overlooking the Mediterranean. The cemetery was created around 1680 to bury the first workers employed in the construction of the Saint-Louis mole. The cemetery first bore the name of St. Charles Cemetery and was called the Marine Cemetery on August 7 , 1945.
Around 1680 the cemetery Saint Charles was created to receive the first dead workers on the construction site of the mole Saint-Louis. It is indicative of the diversity of the settlements of the city during the following centuries and has been enlarged by successive plots, one of them being reserved for the Protestant community whose role has been essential in the development of the port. in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is also called cemetery of the rich, in opposition to cemetery of the poor located in front of the pond of Thau (where George Brassens rests).
Several burials recall the maritime vocation of the city, such as that of the missing pilots by rescuing a ship in distress, where still that of the young sailor Eugene Herber killed in Beijing in 1900. Others testify to the reputation of personalities Sétoises remarkable as the minister Mario Roustan, the man of theater Jean Vilar ... the jouster Vincent Cianni whose carved epitaph reveals the passionate attachment which the whole population of the singular island to the jousting, the filmmaker Henri Colpi ... Paul Valéry, born in Sète in 1871 rests in the tomb of his grandfather Giulo Grassi.

The landscape of Gigondas is shaped by its unique geology. The wine-growing region is enclosed within the jagged ridges of the Dentelles de Montmirail (dentelle is the French word for ‘lace’ and ‘Montmirail’ comes from the Latin mons mirabilis, ‘extraordinary mountain’). Pushed out of the sea 200 million years ago and subsequently eroded into sharp spikes, the Dentelles de Montmirail reach a height of 730 m at their highest point and provide a dramatic backdrop to the area’s vineyards.
