Latvia (/ˈlɑːtviə/ or /ˈlætviə/ (audio speaker iconlisten); Latvian: Latvija [ˈlatvija]; Latgalian: Latveja; Livonian: Leţmō), officially known as the Republic of Latvia (Latvian: Latvijas Republika, Latgalian: Latvejas Republika, Livonian: Leţmō Vabāmō), is a country in the Baltic region of Northern Europe. It is one of the Baltic states; and is bordered by Estonia to the north, Lithuania to the south, Russia to the east, Belarus to the southeast, and shares a maritime border with Sweden to the west. Latvia covers an area of 64,589 km2 (24,938 sq mi), with a population of 1.9 million. The country has a temperate seasonal climate. Its capital and largest city is Riga. Latvians belong to the ethno-linguistic group of the Balts; and speak Latvian, one of the only two surviving Baltic languages. Russians are the most prominent minority in the country, at almost a quarter of the population.
After centuries of German, Swedish, Polish-Lithuanian and Russian rule, which was mainly executed by the Baltic German aristocracy, the Republic of Latvia was established on 18 November 1918 when it broke away from the German Empire and declared independence in the aftermath of World War I. However, by the 1930s the country became increasingly autocratic after the coup in 1934 establishing an authoritarian regime under Kārlis Ulmanis. The country's de facto independence was interrupted at the outset of World War II, beginning with Latvia's forcible incorporation into the Soviet Union, followed by the invasion and occupation by Nazi Germany in 1941, and the re-occupation by the Soviets in 1944 to form the Latvian SSR for the next 45 years. As a result of extensive immigration during the Soviet occupation, ethnic Russians became the most prominent minority in the country, now constituting nearly a quarter of the population. The peaceful Singing Revolution started in 1987, and ended with the restoration of de facto independence on 21 August 1991. Since then, Latvia has been a democratic unitary parliamentary republic.
Latvia is a developed country, with a high-income advanced economy; ranking very high in the Human Development Index. It performs favorably in measurements of civil liberties, press freedom, internet freedom, democratic governance, living standards, and peacefulness. Latvia is a member of the European Union, Eurozone, NATO, the Council of Europe, the United Nations, the Council of the Baltic Sea States, the International Monetary Fund, the Nordic-Baltic Eight, the Nordic Investment Bank, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, and the World Trade Organization. The transport sector is around 14% of GDP. Transit between Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan as well as other Asian countries and the West is large.
The four biggest ports of Latvia are located in Riga, Ventspils, Liepāja and Skulte. Most transit traffic uses these and half the cargo is crude oil and oil products. Free port of Ventspils is one of the busiest ports in the Baltic states. Apart from road and railway connections, Ventspils is also linked to oil extraction fields and transportation routes of Russian Federation via system of two pipelines from Polotsk, Belarus. #latviamap
Riga International Airport is the busiest airport in the Baltic states with 7.8 million passengers in 2019. It has direct flight to over 80 destinations in 30 countries. The only other airport handling regular commercial flights is Liepāja International Airport. airBaltic is the Latvian flag carrier airline and a low-cost carrier with hubs in all three Baltic States, but main base in Riga, Latvia.
Latvian Railway's main network consists of 1,860 km of which 1,826 km is 1,520 mm Russian gauge railway of which 251 km are electrified, making it the longest railway network in the Baltic States. Latvia's railway network is currently incompatible with European standard gauge lines. However, Rail Baltica railway, linking Helsinki-Tallinn-Riga-Kaunas-Warsaw is under construction and is set to be completed in 2026.
National road network in Latvia totals 1675 km of main roads, 5473 km of regional roads and 13 064 km of local roads. Municipal roads in Latvia totals 30 439 km of roads and 8039 km of streets.[188] The best known roads are A1 (European route E67), connecting Warsaw and Tallinn, as well as European route E22, connecting Ventspils and Terehova. In 2017 there were a total of 803,546 licensed vehicles in Latvia.
Latvia has three large hydroelectric power stations in Pļaviņu HES (825MW), Rīgas HES (402 MW) and Ķeguma HES-2 (192 MW). In recent years a couple of dozen of wind farms as well as biogas or biomass power stations of different scale have been built in Latvia.[citation needed]

Jugla ir apkaime Rīgas pilsētas austrumu daļā, Vidzemes priekšpilsētā, Juglas ezera rietumu un Ķīšezera dienvidu piekrastē. Jugla ir viens no retajiem lībiešu cilmes nosaukumiem, kas saglabājies Rīgas vietvārdos. Tas cēlies no lībiešu vārdiem jog, joig, jok, kas nozīmē — upe.[1]
Juglas robežas iezīmē Juglas iela, Brīvības gatve, Biķernieku iela, Šmerļa iela un Lizuma iela. Nozīmīgākas apkaimes ielas ir Brīvības, Juglas, Murjāņu, Malienas, Kvēles un Silciema ielas. Jugla robežojas ar Berģiem (sauszemes savienojums tikai pa Brīvības gatvi), Brekšiem, Dreiliņiem, Mežciemu, Teiku, Čiekurkalnu, Sužiem (savienojums tikai pa ūdeni) un Bukultiem (sauszemes savienojums tikai pa dzelzceļu un Brīvības gatvi).

Plašie Ķīšu un Juglas ezeri un slīkšņainās zemienes starp tiem jau no pilsētas pirmsākumiem kalpojuši kā dabīga aizsardzības līnija pret ienaidniekiem. Sākotnēji abi ezeri bijuši plašāk savienoti un saukti par Ropažu ezeru. 13. gadsimta sākumā, lai nodrošinātu Rīgas satiksmi ar Siguldu un Turaidu, sekla brasla vietā uzbūvēts ap 1 km garš baļķu dambis, kas kalpoja kā tilts un veicināja abu ezeru atdalīšanos. Tā sauktais sprunguļu dambis atradies starp tagadējo Brīvības ielu un dzelzceļa uzbērumu.[10]
Stratēģiski svarīgā teritorija tika uzskatīta par Rīgas pilsētas vārtiem, kurā dabas veidotos nocietinājumus pastiprināja 13. gadsimtā uzceltā Bukultu pils, kas kalpoja kā Rīgas austrumu pievārtes cietoksnis.
1226. gadā radītajā dokumentā par Rīgas patrimoniālā apgabala robežām teikts, ka šajā vietā dzīvojuši lībieši. Saskaņā ar šo dokumentu Juglas teritoriju varēja izmantot namnieki, tirgotāji un krustneši. Jau iekoptie tīrumi un pļavas palika to agrākajiem īpašniekiem. Iedzīvotājiem par izmantoto zemi bija jāmaksā Rīgas pilsētai kunga tiesa. Visu Rīgas pilsētas iedzīvotāju kopīpašums bija ganības, pļavas, zvejas vietas un meži. 1232. gadā Rīgas rāte noteica gruntsnomu namnieku lietošanā esošajai zemei, ko viņi varēja izmantot un dāvināt, bet pilsētai palika virsīpašnieka tiesības.[11] 15. gadsimtā rentnieku vidū minēti arī latvieši. No viduslaikiem saglabājušās ziņas, ka apkaime izmantota, lai papildinātu Rīgas dzeramā ūdens krājums.

This is a drone video from a one-day trip to Riga in November 2018. Drones under 1.5kg are allowed almost anywhere in Latvia, and Riga’s old town is home to some impressive XIII century buildings, such as the Riga Cathedral and the Saint Peter’s Church. There are also four market halls that used to be German zeppelin garages.

Joined by some of the best Latvian Adventure/Lifestyle photographers this was our first camping trip in beautiful countryside of Latvia. Two days we were hiking out in the woods and taking photos of some spectacular locations. Spent night camping with tents and hammocks, and enjoyed the beautiful sunset.

БИКСЕРЕ- (латыш. Biksere) — населённый пункт в Мадонском крае Латвии. Административный центр Сарканской волости.
Находится у региональной автодороги P37 (Плявиняс — Мадона — Гулбене). ОТ города Мадона составляет около 10 км.
Замок строился с 1893 по 1896 год. В настоящее время там есть волостная администрация, библиотека, народный дом, практика семейного врача, аптека, магазин.
Комплекс поместья Биксере с парком является памятником культуры и природы.
