Don't miss visiting these places in Angola (2021 Drone Video)

Angola may take up a lot of space on the map of southern Africa, but it’s almost invisible when it comes to travel in this region. This former Portuguese colony is only just opening up to travellers, after 27 years of war left it cut off from the world. Both a civil conflict and a proxy Cold War, with the Soviet Union, Cuba, South Africa and the USA all involved and vying for mineral and oil resources, the war began after Angola won independence from Portugal in 1975 and continued until 2002.

You’ll need to join an organised tour to visit Angola. These are always small group trips, lasting around 10 days, and typically only departing once a year, starting and finishing in the capital Luanda. Tours rarely spend more than half a day or so here – enough time to see a few sights – before travelling into the southwest of Angola for a cultural tour that focuses on meeting ethnic groups and learning about their traditional lifestyles. Reaching this remote region involves an internal flight from Luanda to Lubango. From here, a 4x4 will transport you over rough roads and often trackless wilderness; expect some long and bumpy journeys.

The capital of Angola is full of stark contrasts. The beautiful Atlantic Ocean views are disrupted by busy ships and the high rise modern looking buildings are contrasted by lean to huts built to accommodate people in the rapidly expanding city. Over-population is apparent in other ways too, namely the insane morning traffic and the stink that regularly trouble the city. Despite all these problems however, Luanda certainly has its charms and is another side to Africa that is worth experiencing.

Lobito, Angolese city, Benguela Railway, Catumbela Estuary, sandspit, harbour, port

Lobito is a town and municipality in Benguela Province in Angola.[1] It is located on the Atlantic Coast north of Catumbela Estuary. 177
It dates from 1905 and owes its existence to the bay of the same name having been chosen as the sea terminus of the Benguela railway to the far interior, passing through Luau to Katanga in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The city is located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. The population is 324,050 (2014) in an area of 3,648 km². The municipality consists of the communes Canjala, Egipto Praia and Lobito.[2]
The city was founded on September 2, 1913 and holds an annual celebration for the occasion.
Portuguese rule[edit]
Lobito, was built on a sandspit and reclaimed land, with one of Africa’s finest natural harbours, protected by a 5 km long sandspit. The old municipality (concelho) was created in 1843 by the Portuguese administration. The town was also founded in 1843 by order of Maria II of Portugal, and its harbour works were begun in 1903. Large developments, however, were not stimulated until the completion in 1928 of the important Benguela Railway, which connected Portuguese Angola with the Belgian Congo. Under Portuguese rule, the port was one of Angola’s busiest, exporting agricultural produce from the interior and handling transit trade from the mines of southeastern Belgian Congo and of Northern Rhodesia. Fishing, tourism and services were also important. The carnival in Lobito was also one of the most renowned and popular in Portuguese Angola.[3] It wasn't until 1843 that Maria II of Portugal approved the birth of the town, which had by then been known as Catumbela das Ostras (Catumbela of Oysters)[4]
After independence from Portugal[edit]

Port of Lobito
After the April 25, 1974 Carnation Revolution in Lisbon, Angola was offered independence. Lobito’s port activities were highly limited by disruptions to railway transit and high insecurity during the Angolan Civil War (1975–2002). With peace and stability, in the 2000s, Lobito started the process of reconstruction and resumed its path to development.

In 1899, the Portugese government initiated the construction of the railroad to access the hinterland and the mineral wealth of the Belgian Congo. The line proved very successful and profitable. After independence, the Angolan civil war brought operations to a halt, and most of the infrastructure is damaged or destroyed. Recently (2005) talks have been intitiated between Angola and Zambia to restore operations.
