Driving through the main shopping lane of the historic town of Chinon, in the Loire, France, gives us a quick preview of the lanes in which we'll soon be taking a little walk. It's primarily a pedestrian zone but our tour van has permission to bring us in here and then drop us off – very convenient for us.
We took a short drive uphill in our tour van and stopped for an overview of the Old Town – a spectacular vista down below, all those slate roofs on top of buildings dating back 400, 500 years old in some cases. There are remains of a large castle up on the hill also overlooking the town.
Richelieu
Richelieu is a commune in the Indre-et-Loire department in central France.
It lies south of Chinon and west of Sainte-Maure de Touraine and is surrounded by mostly agricultural land. Its inhabitants are called Richelais, and Richelaises.
Because of its design as the ideal city of the seventeenth century, the town is the subject of protective measures for its architecture.

'The Lost Line of the Loire' - The Richelieu - Chinon Railway (2004 -2016)
During my first holiday to Loire France in 2004, I visited a preserved Railway based in the market town of Richelieu.
This was to be the first of three visits to Richelieu in the next 12 years!
It was like Aladdin’s Cave walking around the site.
There were no gates or restrictions.
Never saw a single person there either!
The line was the old Chinon – Richelieu Railway (20 km)
was opened in 1884.
The Chinon - Richelieu railway operated until 1937 when the General Council of Indre-et-Loire closed the line.
In 1974 the line was again opened for tourist trains managed by the association 'Train à Vapeur de Touraine'.
By December 26 2004, the last tourist train had run.
I wish I had witnessed the special steam runs that took place.
Since trains had been stopped on the Line from Ligré-Rivière to Richelieu, the association had parked and preserved its railway stock in Richelieu pending a possible decision to restore the track.
In July 2009, the association organised open days in July and August to showcase its railway collection, the workshop depot and the railway museum, installed in a train of postal cars, which it continued to do for a few years.
I returned in May 2011 having driven to France in my Red BMW Z3 Sports car.
I drove straight onto the station platform!
All of the tourist coaches had been removed & the station building itself was boarded up.
Again, I didn’t meet a single person.
Following the ban on traffic on the Chinon - Richelieu line, the association sought approval to transfer its stock in September 2011, with a view to a future tourist operation of the railway line between Thouars and Loudun
In 2014, the name of the association changed to become Steam Train Thouarsais.
In September 2015, the tourist operation project on the Thouars - Loudun line was finally stopped, following a decision by the Thouarsais community of municipalities to no longer participate in the financing of this project and by September 2017, the association had to move its equipment parked in Thouars to other tourist railways.
I visited the site for the last time in May 2016.
The stock had almost been removed except for one diesel locomotive & the SNCF carriage covered in graffiti.
The engine shed was open & its contents all gone.
I left Richelieu with nature re-claiming the site once again.
At each visit I took photos, which I have put together in this video.
But on each of my visits, I never saw any movement of stock or locomotives.
Wherever possible on this video, I have tried to identify the rolling stock on site but a number of items have been difficult.
The Railway Line from Richelieu to Chinon is now a cycle way called the Green Path.
What a sight it must have been even in the 1980s when powerful Steam locomotives departed Richelieu toward Chinon pulling tourist specials.
Now just a distant memory for all those who witnessed them.
