Lorient, France – tourist attractions and things to do

Lorient is a small city and seaport located in the north-western France, in southern Brittany. This town is associated with the French conquest of East Indies, deep sea fishing, the Keroman submarine base, ocean racing, and the Festival Interceltique. The city had many art deco houses, and other tourist attractions like Port Louis and The Cité de la Voile Éric Tabarly, an interactive sailing museum with simulators and hands-on exhibits.

Places to see in ( Lorient - France )

In Morbihan on the southern side of Brittany, Lorient is an oceangoing city of five ports, with the second-largest fishing harbour in France and an enthralling former naval base. Nearly everything you do in Lorient will have a maritime theme, whether you explore an indestructible Nazi submarine base or dive into the high-tech world of yacht racing at the Cité de la Voile.

The very name of “Lorient” is linked to the French East India Company, which was based in the port up to the 1870s. Their headquarters was the fine Hôtel Gabriel, and there’s a museum all about the company in Port-Louis, a brief crossing from Lorient’s ferry port.

Lorient is located on the south coast of Brittany, where the Scorff river and the Blavet river join to form the roadstead of Lorient, before discharging into the Atlantic Ocean. To the south of the city, the Ter river used to flow into the estuary as well, but a dam was built in 1967, so it is now a pond. The city is 503 kilometres (313 mi) south-west of Paris, 153 kilometres (95 mi) south-west of Rennes and 158 kilometres (98 mi) north-west of Nantes. The city comprises different neighbourhoods:

QUIMPER l Bretagne

The French city of Lorient in Brittany was almost completely destroyed in the 2nd World War and needed to be rebuilt. The reason for this was the submarine base Kéroman. It was the largest German submarine base in France with originally 7 bunkers. 3 of them, as well as a huge slipway, remained preserved and are used by sports yachtsmen and fishermen today.
The first, still intact bunker Keroman II, was used as a dry dock. Due to the rocky subsoil it was built above the rocky plateau. This required a slipway, which was also covered by a bunker (Keroman I). Via a slope, the submarines were placed on a traverser. After that they could be parked in Keroman II. This procedure took 20 - 35 minutes.
A French submarine is exhibited between the two bunkers today.
Keroman III is a classic submarine bunker, in which the individual cells were designed as dry docks.
The construction was planned in Germany and built of French workers who were paid above average. That is why at that time the Germans were more popular in Brittany than the Brits, the previously stationed protecting power. The Brits had behaved like an occupying power and were frowned upon in broad levels of the population.
In front of the bunkers two ships were sunk. These should exclude an attack by torpedo dropped from aircraft.
The bunkers remained largely intact until the end of the war, which is why the Allies had to bomb the access roads. This led to the destruction of almost the entire city.
Parts of this one old submarine base serve as a sail shipyard for racing yachtsman today.
This is thanks to Éric Tabarly, one of the most important high-sea yachtsman and most innovative designers of racing yachts. Here, he built three of his six yachts and laid the foundation for one of the most important yachts for regatta sailors.

Concarneau Travel Guide - Best Things to do in France

#Concarneau (Breton: Konk-Kerne, meaning Bay of Cornouaille) is a commune in the #Finistère department of #Brittany in north-western #France. Concarneau is bordered to the west by the Baie de La Forêt. The town has two distinct areas: the modern town on the mainland and the medieval Ville Close, a walled town on a long island in the centre of the harbour. Historically, the old town was a centre of shipbuilding. The Ville Close is now devoted to tourism with many restaurants and shops aimed at tourists.

As well as being France’s third most important fishing port, Concarneau has other assets that make it a very popular summer resort. The main draw is the quaint ville close (walled town) followed by some lovely sandy beaches and a lively maritime festival in August.

Concarneau has made its living from the fishing industry for hundreds of years and the town remains an important centre: more than 100,000 tonnes of tuna are caught each year by Concarneau-based boats. It’s possible for tourists to visit the fish auction, canneries and also sometimes to assist the deep-sea fishermen to unload their catch. But more adventurous sorts might like to join an organised trip on an old sardine boat to try their own hand.

The ville close is without doubt Concarneau’s most popular tourist attraction. This old stone fortified ‘town’ has just a few narrow streets filled with shops and restaurants, where geraniums tumble from window boxes. Take a walk around the ramparts for spectacular views over the area. Near the entrance to the ville close is the Musée de la Pêche, where visitors can learn all about the fishing industry and visit an old trawler.

Several scenic walks start in Concarneau, such as the pushchair-friendly route through Kérandon wood, but the most pleasant is probably the coastal path from Quai de la Croix, past the splendid villas, to the Sables Blancs beach. Here, in July and August, you’ll find water- and land-based activities to suit adults and kids alike.

On the outskirts of Concarneau is the Château de Keriolet, a fine example of 19th-century Gothic architecture, part of which dates back to the 15th century. Restored to its former glory, the house is now open for guided visits.

One of Brittany’s most colourful and authentic festivals takes place in Concarneau in August: Le Festival des Filets Bleus. This festival of ‘blue nets’ celebrates the town’s fishing industry with traditional music and dancing, sea shanties and a smorgasbord of fishy fare.

Places to see in ( Lorient - France ) Citadelle de Port Louis

Places to see in ( Lorient - France ) Citadelle de Port Louis

The Citadel of Port-Louis is a citadel built in the xvi th century by the Spanish, then modified in the xvii th century by the French. It is located in the city of Port Louis in France , and closes the access to the harbor of Lorient . It currently houses a museum of the East India Company , the National Maritime Museum and annexes dedicated to rescue at sea. The citadel, as well as the ramparts, are the subject of a classification as historical monuments since the April 29 , 1948.

A first fortification project at the entrance to the harbor of Lorient was made in 1486 by the Duke of Brittany Francis II , and two emissaries were sent to the city to study the situation. However, the funding is not released until the death of the Duke in 1488 , and the project is put to sleep. Only some fortifications were built in the next century, but are for the city and not the entrance to the bay.

The citadel was rebuilt between 1618 and 1621, when Louis XIII decided to give Port-Louis the status of royal city. The present appearance of the castle dates from this period and despite appearances, one should Vauban that buildings built in the backyard (and arsenal ball park) at a later date.

In 1666, the East India Company established itself in Port-Louis harbor. The city of Lorient is created at this time, and the citadel is considered as an advanced post in the defense of the harbor. The few changes it undergoes during this period allow it to withstand a siege: cisterns, wells and vegetable gardens are landscaped to xviii th century.
