The Greatest High Arctic Town in the World! Longyearbyen (Svalbard) - A Cultural Travel Guide
At over 78 degrees north, Longyearbyen is the last substantial settlement before the North Pole and the main administrative centre of the Svalbard archipelago. Once a tough mining town, it is now a centre for scientific research as well as a prime tourism destination. It provides a home to over 50 nationalities, taking advantage of the visa free rules enshrined in the Svalbard Treaty. Most of the conveniences of a modern Norwegian town are present, but with the significant added pressure of a location in a polar bear environment and the hardship of 84 days of darkness in winter.

Svalbard and Jan Mayen Drone Flight: Longyearbyen is a small coal-mining town on Spitsbergen Island, in Norways Svalbard archipelago. This Arctic town is known for its views of the Northern Lights. The modern Svalbard Museum chronicles the regions natural and cultural history. It includes a stuffed polar bear. Live bears can occasionally be seen in the area. The North Pole Expeditions Museum recounts early efforts to reach the pole by air. Longyearbyen is on Adventfjorden Bay, which can be crossed by boat to reach Hiorthfjellet Mountains trails. Nearby, the Gruve 3 coal mine depicts Svalbards mining history. The underground Svalbard Global Seed Vault preserves backups of the worlds seeds in the name of food security. Husky-dog sleds and snowmobiles set off from Longyearbyen for trips farther afield to places like Isfjord Radio, a former transmission station with views overlooking the Arctic Ocean. Boat trips with fishing are also possible, reaching destinations like the walrus colony on the island of Prins Karls Forland.Svalbard and Jan Mayen is a statistical designation defined by ISO 3166-1 of two parts of Norway under separate jurisdictions—Svalbard and Jan Mayen. While the two are combined for the purposes of the International Organization for Standardization category, they are not administratively related. This has further resulted in the country code top-level domain .sj being issued for Svalbard and Jan Mayen, and ISO 3166-2:SJ. The United Nations Statistics Division also uses this code, but has named it Svalbard and Jan Mayen Islands. Svalbard is an archipelago in the Arctic Ocean under the full sovereignty of Norway, but is subject to the special status granted by the Svalbard Treaty. Jan Mayen is a remote island in the Arctic Ocean; it has no permanent population and is administrated by the County Governor of Nordland. Svalbard and Jan Mayen have in common that they are the only integrated parts of Norway not allocated to counties. While a separate ISO code for Svalbard was proposed by the United Nations, it was the Norwegian authorities who took initiative to include Jan Mayen in the code. Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married 2013 and were super “normal.” I was a teacher and Nate started a small printing business from the spare bedroom of our apartment. We discovered the world of “travel hacking” & became obsessed. So after 2 years of obsessively saving $35k and over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016 for a “one year” trip around the world. Our goal was to see as many places as possible before we ran out of money and went home to “normal life.” We started this travel vlog to share our experiences with friends and family, but quickly fell in love with this lifestyle and did everything we could to keep going. 4 years later, we achieved our new goal of visiting 100 countries and all 7 continents. We had no plans to slow down, until 2020 forced us to ;) Which is when we bought a converted van to start exploring our own country for the first time. Van life was a major adjustment and so different than flying every week like we were used to, but we are incredibly thankful to be able to continue doing something we love every day. ????????????

I have just arrived in SVALBARD, Northern Norway. It's the northernmost inhabited place on earth, with more polar bears than residents. In the summer months, like right now, the sun brightens up the sky 24 hours a day, and in the wintertime, it's exactly the opposite.

It stretches along the foot of the left bank of the Longyear Valley and on the shore of Adventfjorden, the short estuary leading into Isfjorden on the west coast of Spitsbergen, the islands broadest inlet. As of 2002 Longyearbyen Community Council became an official Norwegian municipality. It is the seat of the Governor of Svalbard, whose mayor is Arild Olsen. Known as Longyear City until 1926, the town was established by and named after American John Munro Longyear, whose Arctic Coal Company started coal-mining there in 1906. Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani (SNSK) took over the mining operations in 1916, and still conducts mining. The German Kriegsmarine almost completely destroyed the town on 8 September 1943, but rebuilding took place after the Second World War. Historically, Longyearbyen was a company town, but most mining operations moved to Sveagruva during the 1990s, and production ceased in 2017 due to immense financial losses suffered by SNSK since 2014 due to market conditions. Svalbard Travel
Svalbard (Norwegian pronunciation: [ˈsʋɑ(ː)lbɑː];[3] formerly known by its Dutch name Spitsbergen) is a Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean. Situated north of mainland Europe, it is about midway between continental Norway and the North Pole. The islands of the group range from 74° to 81° north latitude, and from 10° to 35° east longitude. The largest island is Spitsbergen, followed by Nordaustlandet and Edgeøya.
Administratively, the archipelago is not part of any Norwegian county, but forms an unincorporated area administered by a governor appointed by the Norwegian government. Since 2002, Svalbard's main settlement, Longyearbyen, has had an elected local government, somewhat similar to mainland municipalities. Other settlements include the Russian mining community of Barentsburg, the research station of Ny-Ålesund, and the mining outpost of Sveagruva. Svalbard is the northernmost settlement in the world with a permanent civilian population. Other settlements are farther north, but are populated only by rotating groups of researchers.
The islands were first taken into use as a whaling base in the 17th and 18th centuries, after which they were abandoned. Coal mining started at the beginning of the 20th century, and several permanent communities were established. The Svalbard Treaty of 1920 recognizes Norwegian sovereignty, and the 1925 Svalbard Act made Svalbard a full part of the Kingdom of Norway. They also established Svalbard as a free economic zone and a demilitarized zone. The Norwegian Store Norske and the Russian Arktikugol remain the only mining companies in place. Research and tourism have become important supplementary industries, with the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) and the Svalbard Global Seed Vault playing critical roles. No roads connect the settlements; instead snowmobiles, aircraft and boats serve inter-community transport. Svalbard Airport, Longyear serves as the main gateway.
The archipelago features an Arctic climate, although with significantly higher temperatures than other areas at the same latitude. The flora take advantage of the long period of midnight sun to compensate for the polar night. Svalbard is a breeding ground for many seabirds, and also features polar bears, reindeer, the Arctic fox, and certain marine mammals. Seven national parks and twenty-three nature reserves cover two-thirds of the archipelago, protecting the largely untouched, yet fragile, natural environment. Approximately 60% of the archipelago is covered with glaciers, and the islands feature many mountains and fjords.
Svalbard and Jan Mayen are collectively assigned the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country code SJ. Both areas are administered by Norway, though they are separated by a distance of over 500 nautical miles (approximately 600 miles or 950 kilometres) and have very different administrative structures.
The Ultimate Arctic Cruise! - SVALBARD EXPRESS (Hurtigruten) - Bergen to Longyearbyen Voyage
In 2023 Hurtigruten revived the Svalbard Express expedition cruise as part of its 130th anniversary celebrations. The newly refurbished MS Trollfjord takes passengers from Bergen to Longyearbyen (and back if they wish). We took the northbound leg only which allows more time in Longyearbyen and includes a wildlife cruise on the company's MS Bard vessel.
The voyage skirts the incredible coastline of Norway and makes extended stops at Åndalsnes, Træna, Stokmarknes, Tromsø and Honningsvåg as well as sailing into the famous Trollfjord. Every single day was spectacular (as was the food!).
The only disappointment - not seeing Bjørnøya (Bear Island) due to thick fog in the Barents Sea. You can't control the weather!
