Exploring The Source Of Water For Cabrera Dominican Republic - Part 6
Where does all the water come from that feeds Cabrera Dominican Republic. The team had no idea what we were committing to when we promised a viewer to explore where the water comes from in Cabrera.
There is a short section near the first of this video where the audio is blank. Don't worry, this is just a short section and the audio resumes at the 1:31 mark.
We had always heard that there were fresh water aquifers under this area that could supply the whole north coast of the Dominican Republic for over 100 years. But we are not even tapping those reserves. It turns out that most of our water flows down here to the coastal towns through a series of canals and viaducts from up in the nearby mountains. In our 15 years here we have never experienced a shortage of water and the amazing thing about this is that this water source is entirely gravity fed... no electricity needed.
In Part 6 of our 6 part series on Where The Water Comes From we venture out through the canal country up into the edge of the mountain range to where the road ends. We find that as we venture farther and farther away from the main highway, the roads become more and more rustic and as we venture on out we definitely need the 4 wheel drive.

Saltadero de Cabrera is a natural monument in the heart of the promontory of Cabrera. The waterfall is protected by a rainforest. Often you will see a group of young locals jump from the top into the freshwater pool and then climb back up the rock cliff to do it all over again. The town has made improvements in the area with a pedestrian bridge crossing over to the other side that leads you to the new stairs going down to the freshwater pool for those who want to swim and not jump. They have also added restrooms and the railings which are still under construction. It’s only a 2 minute drive from downtown Cabrera. Taking the road Brisa Del Atlántico off the main Highway will lead you straight to the waterfall. Once there you can certainly feel a temperature difference, which is refreshing during the summer months.

A while back I had some time to kill so I thought I’d head out to Playa Grande for lunch and while there visit its neighbor Playa Preciosa. For those who’ve not been here for a while things have really changed. There’s been an upgrade would be putting it mildly. It’s pretty much our one stop shop when it comes to full service at reasonable prices. Check out the menu and see for yourself. Considering you’re on one of the highest ranked beaches in the world featuring great service in an uncrowded atmosphere all at very affordable prices sets the bar at a level few can compete with. We love living in a peaceful low density town so close to several similar beaches. Kind of gives us a reality check every time we’re on one of them. I have to recommend the parrot fish and garlic shrimp. Both are excellent and will only set you back about ten bucks. On the unspoiled, pristine northern coast of the Dominican Republic, where Christopher Columbus discovered the new world, are the newest and most exclusive luxury residential villas. Orchid bay
Next to these is the last piece of land with beach access.
The beach is 550 mts (1,800 ft) full of palms that creates nice shaded areas. The water is so clear it seems unreal. There is an outer reef where you can see local surfers and on the shoreline the ocean is calm, excellent for swimming.
From December through late April is whale season and this land has one the the best and closest viewpoint of the whole north coast. This, just priceless!!!
