8 Best Towns to Live in Scotland

What are the best towns in Scotland? Only a few people would disagree with the description of Scotland as the most rugged and most beautiful of all the four UK nations. Many would celebrate Scotland for its deep and fascinating history, striking mountains, and stately castles not to mention misty lochs and its mythological monsters. Truly, cities and towns in Scotland have a lot of good things for which you should love them. Focusing now on towns, we present here the best 8 towns to live in Scotland.
These smaller gems are scattered across the glens and valleys of Scotland to give the nation an incredible landscape. The next time you plan on vacationing in Scotland, try and see if you can choose some of these 8 best towns to live in Scotland.
8. Helensburgh
A good place to begin beaming our searchlight is Helensburgh, a rich coastal town in Argyll and Bute council area. The town founded in 1776 as a spa by Colquhoun is at the intersection of the Firth of Clyde and East Clyde. The 15,000 residents of this town named after its founder’s wife have their own Community Council. Its unique location 40 kilometers northwest of Glasgow on the water, provides good access from the town to Glasgow. That’s one good reason to love it.
According to The Sunday Times ranking of the best places to live in Britain, Helensburgh is one of the 12 best locations to live in Scotland. Among the wide range of factors considered before the conclusion is reached are job availability and satisfaction, academic performances and exam results, community spirit, broadband speed, and local shops. In any of these, Helensburgh is never found wanting. Thus, we agree that this is one of the best towns to live in Scotland.
7. Bearsden
Bearsden, a town in East Dunbartonshire and on the northwestern fringe of Greater Glasgow is the next on our list. The town about 5.2 kilometers northwest of Glasgow City Center is a suburb with a population of about 28,000 and it provides quick and easy access to the city center.
We first thought of including Bearsden here when it appeared on a list of the 8 best places in Scotland. That list was compiled by The Sunday Times. Looking closer, we found out that the town has an array of cute homes, quality schools, and a thriving community of small shops. This makes it a desirable option for raising a family. It has all of the nighttime entertainment you could ask for.
Though the crime rate in Glasgow city center is high, Bearsden is quite quiet, making it a good place to call home around Glasgow. It’s also one of the coolest neighborhoods in the world.
6. Dunkeld
Let’s proceed to Dunkeld a town in Perth and Kinross. The town is located on the north bank of the River Tay and opposite Birnam. Dunkeld is frequently referred to as the Gateway to the Highlands because of its proximity to the geological Highland Boundary Fault. The town that is one of the most loved in the UK is also one of the best towns to live in Scotland. It’s a popular holiday area in Scotland. It’s also well connected by road and rail to all the major centers in Scotland and the other parts of the UK. Though the town with an estimated population of 1,300 may be relatively small, it’s among the best.
This historically and naturally significant town has been a settlement since ancient times. That’s why you will find a historical cathedral and other historical edifices that would even remind you that it was declared the capital of the Scottish nation in the 9th Century.

INVERNESS, SCOTLAND (2023) | 9 Fun Things To Do In & Around Inverness & Loch Ness

Inverness is located on Scotland’s northeast coast and is considered the cultural capital of the Scottish Highlands. It’s a fairly small and compact city with an abundance of places to stay, eat, and shop. In this video, we highlight 9 fun things to do in & around Inverness:

9. Walk the waterfront & Ness Islands
One of the most peaceful things to do in Inverness is to stroll around its beautiful waterfront area to the Ness Islands. You can start your walk in the city center and follow both banks of the river in an easy 3 km or 2 mi loop.

8. Hit the pub at night
For a classic Highland pub experience, head to one of the many pubs on Church Street: Highlander, Hootananny, Gellions, and more!

7. Visit Inverness Cathedral
Another fun thing to do in Inverness is to visit Inverness Cathedral, located on the banks of the River Ness. Built in 1869, this historic building is one of the prettiest cathedrals in all of Scotland. You can also visit the inside for a small fee.

6. Admire Leakey’s bookshop
If you’re into reading books, then Leakey’s bookshop is a must-visit. This is Scotland’s largest second-hand bookshop and you can find anything here, from contemporary paperbacks to vintage prints, books, and maps.

5. Do a whisky tasting
Scotland is famous for its whisky and Scottish people are very proud of this sophisticated drink. In Inverness, you can find whiskey at any bar or pub. We did a whiskey tasting at the Malt Room, which offers over 200 different malt whiskies for tasting.

4. Shop souvenirs at the Victorian Market
Built in 1890, the covered Victorian Market houses a variety of shops selling unique handmade gifts, art, and crafts. There are also a number of cafés and dining experiences here. It’s a great place to shop Scottish souvenirs.

3. Visit the nearby Clava Cairns & Culloden Battlefield
This prehistoric site is a well-preserved Bronze Age cemetery complex that dates back to around 2000 BC. There are three different large cairns that can be visited and it’s entirely free. Nearby, you can also find the Culloden Battlefield & Viaduct, which played a significant role in Scottish History. It’s easy to combine both in one visit.

2. Spot Nessie at Loch Ness
Located only a short drive from Inverness, Loch Ness is home to the legendary monster called Nessie, which is said to live in the deep, murky waters. Fort Augustus is situated on the southern tip of Loch Ness, offering boat tours and spectacular views.

☑️ Loch Ness day tour from Inverness:
☑️ Loch Ness boat tour from Dochgarroch (13 mins drive from Inverness):

1. Visit Urquhart Castle
Finally, along the north shore of Loch Ness, you’ll find the ruins of spectacular Urquhart Castle.

Places to see in ( Linlithgow - UK )

Places to see in ( Linlithgow - UK )

Linlithgow is a royal burgh in West Lothian, Scotland. It is West Lothian's county town, reflected in the county's alternative name of Linlithgowshire. An ancient town, it lies south of its two most prominent landmarks: Linlithgow Palace and Linlithgow Loch, and north of the Union Canal. Linlithgow's patron saint is Saint Michael and its motto is St. Michael is kinde to straingers. A statue of the saint holding the burgh coat of arms stands on the High Street.

Linlithgow is located in the north-east of West Lothian, close to the border with Stirlingshire. It lies 20 miles (30 km) west of Edinburgh along the main railway route to Glasgow. Before the construction of the M8 & M9 motorways and the opening of the Forth Road Bridge, the town lay on the main road from Edinburgh to Stirling, Perth and Inverness while the canal system linked the burgh to Edinburgh and Glasgow. The nearby village of Blackness once served as the burgh's port. Linlithgow is overlooked by its local hill, Cockleroi.

The chief historic attraction of Linlithgow is the remains of Linlithgow Palace, the birthplace of James V and Mary, Queen of Scots, and probably Scotland's finest surviving late medieval secular building. The present palace was started (on an older site) in 1424 by James I of Scotland. It was burnt in 1746, and, whilst unroofed, it is still largely complete in terms of its apartments (though very few of the original furnishings survived). Linlithgow was also the site of the Battle of Linlithgow Bridge at the western edge of the town. The bridge no longer stands. The roadway to Linlithgow over the River Avon is described by scholars as a lifted road.

The town has a generally east-west orientation and is centred on what used to be the main Edinburgh-Stirling road; this now forms the main thoroughfare called the High Street. Plots of farmed land, known as rigs, ran perpendicular to the High Street and comprised much of the town's development until the 19th century. Growth was restricted to the north by Linlithgow Loch, and by the steep hill to the south, but, in the late 19th & early 20th centuries, development began to take place much further south of the High Street. In the late 20th century, demand for housing saw many residential developments take place much further south, as well as spreading into new areas.

This southward development was bisected by the Union Canal and latterly the main Edinburgh-Glasgow railway line, and today the limited crossings of both cause problems with modern traffic as there are only three places where each can be crossed in the town.
To the west, Linlithgow Bridge used to be a somewhat distinct village with its own identity, but in the latter half of the 20th century it was enveloped in the expansion of the main town and today the distinction between them is hard to make out.

( Linlithgow - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Linlithgow . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Linlithgow - UK

Linlithgow Palace is situated in the attractive West Lothian town of Linlithgow, around 15 miles west of Edinburgh. It was, at one time, one of the the principal royal residences in the 15th and 16th centuries, but eventually fell in to disuse with the Union of the Crowns in 1603.

Linlithgow Palace is surrounded by beautiful parkland (Linlithgow Peel) and overlooks Linlithgow Loch, which is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), teeming with bird life and a firm favourite with local fishermen. Linlithgow Palace, although a ruin, is very well preserved with plenty to discover and explore.

It's famously the birth place of Mary, Queen of Scots and will keep all keen historians very busy! During the summer, the adjacent medieval 15th-century St Michael's Church is also well worth a visit. The loch and parkland are a great place for bird spotting, so take a picnic and make a day of it. Alternatively walk down in to the high street, where there are lots of good coffee shops and cafes, where you can enjoy a good bite to eat. The Palace is open all year round and there's a small admission fee to get in. It's one of my favourite places in Scotland and well worth a visit.

Inside LINLITHGOW PALACE - Is It Worth The Money? - Scotland Walking Tour | 4K | 60FPS

Linlithgow Palace is situated in Linlithgow, West Lothian and is famous for being the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots. The palace was one of the principal residences of the monarchs of Scotland in the 15th and 16th centuries. Although maintained after Scotland's monarchs left for England in 1603, the palace was little used, and was burned out in 1746. It is now a visitor attraction in the care of Historic Scotland.

The Palace also is home to Spectacular Jousting with it due to take place this summer.

Linlithgow

Linlithgow Scottish Gaelic: Gleann Iucha, Scots Lithgae) is a Royal Burgh in West Lothian, Scotland. An ancient town, it lies south of its two most prominent landmarks: Linlithgow Palace and Linlithgow Loch, and north of the Union Canal.

The town's coat of arms shows a black dog, chained to an oak tree, which grows on an island. Linlithgow's patron saint is Saint Michael and its motto is St. Michael is kinde to straingers.

Formerly the principal town of West Lothian, which was also known as Linithgowshire, the town lies some 20 miles (32 km) west of Edinburgh along the main railway route to Glasgow.

The present Palace was started (on an older site) in 1424 by James I of Scotland. It was burnt in 1746, and, whilst unroofed, it is still largely complete in terms of its apartments (though very few of the original furnishings survived).

Linlithgow Palace from the public park surrounding it, known as The Peel
Linlithgow was also the site of the Battle of Linlithgow Bridge at the western edge of the town. The bridge no longer stands today. The roadway to Linlithgow over the River Avon is described by scholars as a lifted road.

Apart from the Palace, a second attraction, standing adjacent, is 15th century St. Michael's Church, the most complete surviving example of a large late medieval 'burgh kirk' in Scotland[citation needed]. Its western tower originally had a distinctive stone crown spire, of the type seen also on St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh, or Newcastle Cathedral, which was removed in the early 19th century. In 1964 a replacement, and at the time controversial, spire in aluminium in a modern style by the prominent Scots architect Sir Basil Spence, representing Christ's crown of thorns, was added.

Many historic buildings line the High Street. On the south side ground levels rise and several historic wynds and closes as found in Edinburgh still exist. The most prominent space is on axis with the road to the Palace. This contains the Cross Well of 1807 which proclaims itself to be a replica of its 1628 predecessor. To its north stands the Town House of 1668 by the master mason John Smith. This replaced a previous hall demolished by Oliver Cromwell's army in 1650. Much of its original interior was removed in a modernisation project of 1962.[1] The High Street is particularly noted for its high number of ancient taverns.

James Hamilton of Bothwellhaugh carried out the first assassination with a firearm, when he shot James Stewart, 1st Earl of Moray, the Regent of Scotland, on 11 January 1570 in Linlithgow

Mike and Joe Guide Linlithgow

Visit Linlithgow virtually with Award Winning Blue Badge Guides, Joe and Mike as they present a guided walk from the the outer gateway of Linlithgow Palace to St Michael’s Well on the High Street. On the way hear about characters such as James V, Mary Queen of Scots, David Waldie, Regent Moray and Scotty from ‘Star Trek’.

Linlithgow Palace (Birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots), Linlithgow, Scotland / Alba, UK - April 2016

Linlithgow Palace is situated in the centre of the small town of Linlithgow in the Lothian Region of Scotland, approximately 24 km (15 miles) to the west of the Scottish Capital, Edinburgh. It was once a majestic royal residence of the Stewarts but today it lies roofless and ruined. It is still nonetheless a hugely impressive quadrangular structure with four ranges grouped around a central courtyard.

James I ordered work on a palace to begin in 1424, following a fire that severely damaged the earlier building on its site. The elegant, new ‘pleasure palace’ became a welcome rest stop for royals on the busy road between Edinburgh Castle and Stirling Castle.

The Stewart queens especially liked the peace and fresh air, and Linlithgow Palace served as the royal nursery for:

James V – born 1512
Mary Queen of Scots – born 1542
Princess Elizabeth – born 1596

However the palace fell quickly into decline when James VI moved the royal court to London in 1603, following his coronation as James I of England.

The palace’s north quarter, which probably housed the queen’s apartment where Mary was born, fell to the ground in 1607. It was rebuilt around 1620, on the orders of James VI. In 1746, when a great fire swept through the palace causing much destruction.

This majestic ruins of the Palace are situated on a low hill overlooking a small inland loch. The name Linlithgow means ‘the loch in the damp hollow’.

The site was first occupied as far back as Roman times 2,000 years ago. There has been a royal residence here since at least the reign of David I (1124–53). He also founded the town that grew up around the royal residence.

In 1296 Edward I of England invaded Scotland and the ‘Hammer of the Scots’ had a formidable defence built around the royal residence in 1302. He called it his ‘pele’ (from the Old French ‘pel’, meaning ‘stake’).

No visible features of the original Linlithgow Peel survive. The name is now used for the attractive parkland that surrounds the remains of the later Stewart palace.

James I had begun work on the new palace shortly after his return from captivity in England. Over the course of the next century and more, his heirs completed the formidable task.

This video taken in the spring of 2016 includes shots of the Great Hall (built for James I), the royal apartments added by James IV (1488–1513),
the marvellous three-tiered courtyard fountain added by James V in 1538 and the north quarter rebuilt for James VI (1567–1625).

Nowadays it has become a popular tourist attraction and is managed by Historic Environment Scotland. The music for the video is a medieval bag-pipe tune.

Linlithgow Palace in West Lothian

Linlithgow Palace can be found in the quaint West Lothian market town of Linlithgow, set back from the high street in a secluded setting overlooking Linlithgow Loch.

This ruined (but still mightily impressive) royal residence was built and extended over the course of two hundred years, with the first foundation stones being laid in 1424 and works continuing in various stages until 1620.

The palace stands on a low hill above a small inland loch which gives the town of Linlithgow its name - the loch in the damp hollow - with the surrounding parkland providing an attractive background.

This beautiful renaissance building is famed for its majestic architecture that includes one of the finest examples of a courtyard fountain in Britain, as well as being the birthplace of Scotland's legendary Mary Queen of Scots.

Linlithgow Walking Tour in 4K HDR with Immersive 360° Binaural Audio.

Linlithgow is famous for its Palace, birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots.

Linlithgow Palace is the highlight of this ancient burgh halfway between Falkirk and Edinburgh. This wonderful 15th century ruin is perfectly positioned beside Linlithgow Loch. Mary Queen of Scots was born here in 1542, becoming queen six days later. After a fire in 1424, James I started construction of the present palace, but this took over 200 years to complete.

Kids will love exploring the ruins, and perhaps interested by the Linlithgow Story, which, as it says, tells the story of the town. Linlithgow Loch is a haunt for wildfowl, especially in winter. Boat trips on the Union Canal are another popular excursion.

Another must see and visit is the community Linlithgow Museum. Learn about the rich history of the Royal Burgh of Linlithgow. Find out about Linlithgow's Royal connections, the trades of the town, and the ordinary and extra-ordinary people who lived or worked there over the centuries.
