When you first arrive in Lijiang, you will be impressed by the beautiful scenery like small bridges and flowing water. The beautiful lakes and mountains will surely make you intoxicated. In Lijiang, you can be a wayward child, put aside the troubles of life, fantasize, have fun, and enjoy the warm sunshine here wantonly; or take a hike to experience the beauty of natural mountains and rivers; you can also be in the intoxicating One night, looking forward to an unexpected love. Top 10 Villages to Visit in China - Historic Towns and Countryside (Travel Video)

Welcome to China’s villages and historic towns. Often touted for its ever changing city skylines, China’s countryside shows a very different side of the country. From beautiful riverside villages to snow covered mountain towns. From mysterious tulou (earthen buildings) to awe-inspiring rice terraces. Traveling rural China can be an eye-opening experience.

I spent more than 18 months in China, spread over the course of a decade and a half. In the last years, I started filming the places that I traveled to, using regular cameras and drones. All footage in this travel video is shot by myself between 2010 and 2019.

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video:

We start off this journey in Yuanyang, a spectacular mountain region where you can find some of the world’s most jaw-dropping rice terraces. Staying with local families is a great way to explore the area, filled with breathtaking landscapes and friendly villages.

Xuexiang is located in the North of China, and is mostly known for its extreme Winter weather, with freezing temperatures and layers of snow. It’s a popular tourist attraction and beautiful sight. The ‘tulou’ buildings in Fujian province are the next destination. These structures were used by the local Hakka people as defense against rivaling communities and bandits. While many still function as homes, some are now used as restaurants and hotels for tourists.

Lijiang is one of China’s most beautiful historic towns, with classic architecture and narrow lanes that can be explored for days. Nearby Dali is worth a visit for its incredible Three Pagodas and Buddhist temple. We travel onwards to Xiahe, a tranquil town just outside Tibet proper. Join monks and pilgrims on traditional koras, and soke up Tibetan culture.

Yangshuo, on the banks of the Li River, might be one of China’s most famous villages, surrounded by mesmerizing limestone hills and mountains. It also provides a good insight into farming life in the country (you can rent bicycles and motorcycles for nice day trips). Shaoshan is a somewhat odd place. It’s the birthplace of Mao Zedong, regarded as the founder of the People’s Republic. The village is a popular stop on the ‘Red Tourism’ trail, a government propaganda campaign.

Fenghuang is a stunning ancient village in the same Hunan province, with incredible architecture, including stone bridges and towers, stilt houses, and a city wall. The next spot on my list is Zhujiajao a popular ‘water town’, not far from Shanghai.

We finish this tour in Pingyao, perhaps the best preserved walled town (or small city) in the country. It used to be an important center of trade and finance, and it’s fascinating to walk the quiet neighborhoods and intriguing alleyways.

The Top Ancient Town in China: Lijiang Ancient City

China is a country’s full of so many beautiful ancient towns. Which is the best one? According to the research I’ve compiled over the internet, Lijiang Ancient City in northwest Yunnan Province is the top ancient town in China. Countless people, websites, and travel agencies recommend this as a must-visit place in China. Way back when, it was one of the most important posts along the Tea Horse Road and today it’s one of 4 completely preserved ancient cities in China, and one of 2 ancient cities in China declared cultural world heritages

Kunming is a national historical and cultural city in China. Humans lived and multiplied around Dianchi Lake as early as 30,000 years ago; Dian Kingdom was established in 278 BC and its capital was established here; Nanzhao Kingdom built and extended the East City in 765, marking the beginning of Kunming’s construction ; At the end of the Ming Dynasty, the Yongli regime of the Nanming Dynasty established its capital in Kunming. Kunming has a monsoon climate in the northern subtropical low-latitude plateau mountain. It is a mountainous landform, surrounded by mountains on three sides, and bordered by Dianchi Lake in the south. The scenery along the lake is beautiful. Because of its location on the low-latitude plateau, it has a climate of all seasons like spring and enjoys the reputation of Spring City. MUST SEE SIGHTs of CHINA for your FIRST VISIT! (Top 10)

These are my TOP 10 MUST SEE SIGHTS and HIDDEN GEMS that we saw during our 5 weeks in China. From busy cities to cute hipster towns. Natural wonders to man made gems. China really has everything need to make it your next favourite travel destination: this is your China travel inspiration!

In this video, we look at the best places to visit and some of the most useful China travel advice for your first visit: including train travel, how to access the internet through a VPN and how to deal with culture shock.

EVERY PLACE FEATURED IN THE VIDEO (in alphabetical order).

BEST VPN FOR CHINA: To access any western social media platforms in China, you're going to need a VPN. Ivacy offers a great VPN for a very affordable price (ad):

APPS TO DOWNLOAD
I should really have mentioned this in the video. Before your trip, make sure you download WeChat (it's free) for scanning things in shops and restaurants for translation. Didi is also a good one, it's the Chinese Uber!

BEIJING
The capital of China is a big, busy city but it's little hutongs are a lot of fun to explore. The Summer Palace and the Forbidden City are both really worth seeing as well.

CHAKA SALT LAKE -
A lesser visited gem, located about 4 hours away from the city of Xining in Qinghai province. Famous for it's mirror-like reflections of the sky.

CULTURE SHOCK
I received a lot of comments saying that people had some reservations and fears about visiting China. To be honest, I felt the same way before I went.

DALI -
An ancient city in Yunnan province that has a little bit of everything that I love! There's nature on the shores of Erhai Lake and up in the heights of Canshan Mountain. The stunning Three Pagodas temple and the bustling culture of the ancient city.

GREAT WALL OF CHINA -
Requires no introduction. But I really recommend exploring the wilder and more remote areas of the wall, rather than the touristy sections. In this film I looked at 3 different areas and compared the strengths and weaknesses of each.

HONG KONG -
A giant, sprawling city. Which also has some amazing natural spots like Lantau Island and Kowloon Park, That's what I focussed on in my travel film.

KUNMING -
Kunming has a reputation for being a transport hub, but it's actually a really fun city to spend a few days. The Dragon Gate and Green Lake Park are particularly great and are the main focus of my travel guide linked above.

LIJIANG OLD TOWN -
A beautiful ancient town with stunning maze like streets. It rained most of the time we were there, so I went searching for the little hidden gems of the streets.

RAINBOW MOUNTAINS -
This was the best day that I had in China. Away from the Danxia Landform Geopark is a peaceful national park that is so worth exploring. It feels more like Australia or the US than China.

SHANGHAI -
The last stop that we had in China. You can get some amazing views from the World Financial Centre Viewpoint.

TRAIN TRAVEL IN CHINA
The main way we got around China. We booked everything through China Highlights, which made thinks very easy (not sponsored, just good):

VPN (virtual private network)
You need a VPN to access almost every western social media accounts in China. For an affordable, but good VPN use Ivacy (ad):

XIAN -
I spent 24 hours exploring Xian and it definitely wasn't enough time. The Terracotta Warriors are amazing, but my film focusses on the other gems of the city.

XINGPING -
Home to the best view in China: Laozhai Mountain.

YANGSHUO -
Beautiful karst mountains, rivers and hiking. My video guide features everything we did there and it's a pretty extensive list! Including instructions on how to get to the best viewpoint in the area.

The Most Beautiful City in China | Dali, Yunnan

At the heart of Yunnan Province, Dali is the most stunning city I've been to in China! Whereas many natural sceneries in China are out in the middle of nowhere, the beauties of Dali are steps within civilization. The unique cuisine, hospitable locals, and jaw-dropping landscape makes Dali one of my favorite places to visit.

Lijiang, The Forgotten Kingdom (Yunnan: The China You Never Knew, episode 11)

Peter Goullart was the first Westerner to dub the village of Lijiang 'The Forgotten Kingdom'. The local Naxi people, their town and the surrounding countryside captured his heart back in the 1930s. He ended up staying for almost a decade. In this episode of Yunnan: The China You Never Knew, host Jordan Porter follows in the footsteps of Goullart and countless others, as he explores this UNESCO World Heritage site.

In the series, we follow Chinese food and alcohol expert Jordan Porter as he crisscrosses western Yunnan. Along the way, he learns about indigenous cultures, samples fantastic local food and speaks with the people who call this unique corner of China home. For more about Destination China and Yunnan province, see the following links:

Where we stayed:
We slept at the Zen Garden Hotel. The room was a littlebit disappointing for the price, but you also pay for the great location in the middle of the old town! And eventually the bed was good. Cookies are amazing, hotel staff is friendly, and just walking out the door you walk into the old town. The common room is very beautiful.

The Incredible Old Town of Lijiang, China's Best-Known Old Town | Yunnan, China

------------------------------
★★ Why is Lijiang famous? ★★
------------------------------
Lijiang, also known as Likiang, is a prefecture-level city in the northwest of Yunnan Province, China.

Lijiang is famous for its UNESCO Heritage Site, the Old Town of Lijiang, which contains a mixture of different historical architecture styles and a complex, ancient water-supply system.

------------------------------
★★ When was the old town of Lijiang built? ★★
------------------------------
Lijiang Old Town was first built in the late Song Dynasty and early Yuan Dynasty, with a history of more than 800 years. From the beginning to the reign of Yongzheng in Qing Dynasty, Lijiang Old Town was under the rule of Mu Family, local commanders during that time in Lijiang.

------------------------------
★★ Old Town of Lijiang ★★
------------------------------
The Old Town of Lijiang, which is perfectly adapted to the uneven topography of this key commercial and strategic site, has retained a historic townscape of high quality and authenticity.

Its architecture is noteworthy for the blending of elements from several cultures that have come together over many centuries.

Lijiang also possesses an ancient water-supply system of great complexity and ingenuity that still functions effectively today.

★★ Old Town of Lijiang — A Walk Through the History ★★
------------------------------
Lijiang Old Town, also known as Dayan Old Town, was a former trading town and a stop for traders carrying goods on the Ancient Tea and Horse Road. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.

The architecture of Lijiang Old Town is noteworthy for the blending of elements from several cultures — Naxi, Bai, Yi, Tibetan, and Han. The town also possesses an ancient water supply system of great complexity and ingenuity.

Now, Lijiang Old Town has been commercialized and millions of tourists visit every year, but, though different, its character is now even more appealing — it's a travelers' magnet.

Area: 7.3 square kilometers (2.8 square miles)

Popular activities: photographing/admiring ancient architecture; relaxing in the laid-back, old-town atmosphere
Suited to: anyone, especially the people who are interested in history and minority culture

Time needed: 1 day
------------------------------
Highlights You Should Not Miss
------------------------------
Lijiang Old Town is characterized by ancient cobbled streets, stone bridges, and water-wheel-driven canals decorated with flowers. Shops, cafés, bars, restaurants, snack stalls, hotels, and hostels can be found everywhere.

In addition, there are many ancient and solemn buildings, beautiful parks, museums, and more to explore.

------------------------------
The Mufu (Mu Clan's Mansion)
------------------------------
The Mufu was the residence of the Naxi people's Mu clan who were in charge of Lijiang during the Yuan (1279–1368), Ming (1368–1644), and Qing (1644–1912) dynasties.

In its heyday, the Mufu covered an area of more than 6 hectares (16 acres or 12 football pitches) and had nearly 100 buildings. It was the heart of Lijiang Old Town for 800 years. Based on the architectural style of the China's Han majority, ruling in the Ming Dynasty, it integrates the local styles of Naxi and Bai.
------------------------------
Sifang Street (Square Street)
------------------------------
Sifang Street is located in the center of Lijiang Old Town and is one of its busiest places. You will find all kinds of Lijiang specialty food there. It is also an important site for the locals to celebrate festivals, when a stage in set on the north side of the street for locals to sing and dance on.

Other popular streets include Wuyi Street and Qiyi Street, where there are most restaurants and bars.
------------------------------
The Big Waterwheels
------------------------------
The big waterwheels are a landmark of Lijiang Old Town. As you enter the old town, you will see them. The river flowing through the old town keeps them rotating. Bar Street is next to them, which is busy at night.

------------------------------
The Best Times for a Visit
------------------------------
The best times to visit Lijiang are from late March to May and mid-October to November for comfortable temperatures and mostly clear skies.

In winter, which is also mostly clear, the low nightly temperatures are just a little above freezing, so bring enough warm clothes.

Bring rain gear for the summer rainy season between June and September. The cobblestones are slippery when wet, so please be careful when walking on them.
