Saint Meinhard's Island on Daugava river in ???????? Latvia
Ikšķile is a place where more than 800 years ago historical events of both national and European importance took place. The ruins of the oldest sacred stone building, located on the St. Meinhard’s Island on the river Daugava, are the witnesses of these events. In 1184, Meinhard, who was an Augustinian canon at the Segeberg Abbey in Holstein, started to build a church on the island. The church served as the chair of the Livonian bishop till 1201, when Riga was founded. The building was thoroughly reconstructed during 1879–1881, but was destroyed in 1916. Nowadays, a 10 m high metal cross (artist: E. Samovičs), and a stone altar (sculptor: J. Karlovs) are placed on the island. For conservation purposes the ruins were covered with a metal roof in 2002. Visitors can get to the ruins via passenger ferry or a boat. Each August the St. Meinhard's day is celebrated on the island, and the Holy Mass is held. If previously arranged, it is possible to held baptism or wedding on the island. An architectural and historical monument of national importance.

Kastaņas offers accommodation in a holiday house in the peaceful, green surroundings, 1.2 miles from the River Daugava. There is a children’s playground and a basketball court.
The house is wooden and on the ground floor there is a large lounge with a fireplace, a bathroom and a kitchen that includes a stove, a refrigerator and a dishwasher.
There also is a dining area and guests can also enjoy their meals outside on the terrace. On the 1st floor of Kastaņas there are two double rooms, a balcony and a living room.
Guests can go fishing in the pond or use a sauna or an outdoors tub. The nearest bus stop is 1.2 miles away and Lielvarde is 3.7 miles from the property.

Лиелвардская евангелическая-лютеранская церковь была построена в 1747 г. Возведенный на самом берегу Даугавы храм разрушила немецкая артиллерия во время первой мировой войны,
В 1931 году по проекту архитектора П.Кундзиньша началось строительство новой церкви на старом месте. Церковь освящена в 1934 году. В 1938 году церковь получила в подарок от Организации охраны железной дороги Лиелварде - запрестольный образ К. Миесниекса «Иисус в Гефсиманском саду», который был отреставрирован в 1989 году. Карлис Улманис пожертвовал средства на строительство церковной скамьи, кафедры и алтаря. Церковь является памятником архитектуры государственного значения, а алтарь, алтарь, кафедра и ступени священнослужителей - памятниками искусства национального значения.
Рядом с церковью расположилась так называемая кровать Лачплесиса - величественный камень, весом в 80 тонн. Андрей Пумпур (1841-6.7.1902)латышский поэт, автор народного эпоса Лачплесис. Родился в семье бедного крестьянина, ходил на барщину в баронское имение, в 1867-72 гг. работал помощником землемера. В те годы в Пиебалге - одном из центров латышской культуры - он познакомился с писателями - братьями Каудзит, стал писать острые сатиры. Первое его стихотворение было опубликовано в 1869 году. В 1876 году Пумпур уехал в Москву, вступил в добровольческий полк и участвовал в войне против турок в Сербии. В 1878 году окончил юнкерское училище в Одессе и до конца жизни служил в русской армии, но не оставлял и литературных занятий. Главным трудом жизни Пумпура стал эпос Лачплесис, созданный на основе народных сказаний, романтический герой которого борется с Черным Рыцарем, под которым недвусмысленно подразумевались немецкие угнетатели.
Более глубоко в парке, за церковью, сохранился построенный через овраг каменный арочный мостик (XIX в.), под которым виднеются остатки колонн портика Лиелвардского дворца.
Дворец усадьбы Лиелвардес, который в свое время вздымался на противоположной стороне оврага, был построен в начале XIX в. и около 1912 года, во времена Артура фон Вулфа, был перестроен по проекту архитектора Вильгельма Бокслафа (1858 -1945). Украшенный колоннами портика, террасами и балюстрадами, это был одним из самых красивейших дворцов в стиле неоклассицизма в Латвии. Постройка была разрушена в период первой мировой войны и снесена в 20-е годы XX века.
Теперь на месте замка устроен Сад скульптур, в котором можно осмотреть созданные из дерева образы эпоса «Лачлесис». Сад открыт в 1988 г.
В советское время Лиелварде был знаменит колхозом-миллионером «Лачплесис». После распада СССР он был преобразован в паевое общество, которое в 1996 году было признано неплатежеспособным и приватизировано по частям. Администратор паевого общества Олав Церс пытался взыскать долги колхоза с пайщиков отдельных предприятий, образованных на базе подразделений колхоза, инициируя судебные иски и затрудняя работу предприятия. Таким образом ему удалось довести до банкротства и их.
Имя легендарного председателя колхоза Эдгара Каулиньша сейчас носит средняя школа.
Небольшая неточность в рассказе:-Карлис Ульманис не был первым президентом Латвии.

В глубине парка, под обрывистым берегом Даугавы скрываются развалины Лиелвардского замка (12) - один из самых интересных объектов парка.
Замок, мог быть, построен перед 1248 годом, когда он упоминается как замок Домского капитула. Точной даты постройки замка в хронике нет.
Позднее замок перешёл в собственность рижского архиепископа. В 1318 и 1359 годах замок занимали орденские войска. В 1361 году замок заняли литовцы и разграбили его. Позднее архиепископу пришлось заложить замок ордену, и только в 1435 году архиепископ Херинг Шампенберг с большим трудом выкупил его. В 1479 году орден вновь оккупирует замок. В 1484 году, сильно повреждённый и разграбленный замок, был возвращён архиепископу. В 1514 году архиепископ Яспер Линде подарил замок конвенту братьев Антония.
В начале Ливонской войны, в 1562 году, Лиелварде вошло в состав Польши, и замок стал собственностью польского короля. В 1577 году замок заняли войска русского царя Ивана Грозного. В 1578 года замок заняли рижане, но русские отбили его обратно. Что бы у русских не было сильного укрепления вблизи Риги, рижане вновь занимают замок и разрушают его. В начале XVII века замок представлял собой развалины. В 1633 году шведы хотели восстановить и укрепить замок, но не успели. Началась шведско-русская война.
Замок был построен на месте деревянного замка ливов, на мысе образованном правыми берегами рек Даугава и Румбиня. Высота их берегов в этом месте достигала 20 метров. В 1937 году было образовано Кегумское водохранилище и высота берега сейчас достигает пару метров. В западной части были вырыты два рва глубиной около 10 метров.
Площадь главного замка была 170х85 метра, площадь предзамка 130х70 метра. Крепостная стена была только вокруг главного замка. По углам стены находились круглые башни. Башня в плане составляла четырёхугольник 7,6 х 7,7 метра. Толщина стен достигала почти 2 метра. Внутри крепостной стены находилось двухэтажное жилое здание. Над стеной виднелась только его крыша.
До наших дней сохранились развалины жилого здания примерно в 1,5 этажа. Развалины законсервированы. Стены от разрушений защищает крыша.
Территория, на которой находится город, до прихода немецких рыцарей была зоной конфликтов между ливами и балтами. Городище Леневарден упоминается в хронике под 1201 годом. Археологические раскопки обнаруживают во множестве доисторические артефакты.

Все крупные латвийские пивоварни сейчас принадлежат транснациональным корпорациям. Но это не мешает им рекламировать свои сорта как истинно латвийское пиво. Однако потребителей не обманешь, и они все больше предпочитают изделия местных маленьких пивоварен. И правильно делают.

Uldevena pils ir 12.gs. senlatviešu koka pils, veidota balstoties uz arheoloģisko izrakumu materiāliem.
Šī pils nav konkrēta pilskalna rekonstrukcija, tās aizsargsienas un dzīvojamās ēkas veidojot izmantoti dažādās apdzīvotās vietās atrasto būvju paraugi (Mežotnes, Talsu, Raunas, Tenīskalna, Jersikas pilskalnā, Rīgas ciemā u.c.), tādējādi veidojot kopēju baltu virsaišu pilskalnu-ideālrekonstrukciju. Šeit var aplūkot dzīvojamās mājas ar nelielām dūmistabām, podnieku un kalēju darbnīcām, aplūkot tērpu rekonstrukcijas un iegūt plašu informāciju par Senlatvijas dzīvi vēlajā dzelzs laikmetā. Iespējams sarīkot senlatviešu kāzu rituālu.

Замок Улдевена – деревянный замок древних латышей 12 века, был воссоздан на основании материалов археологических раскопок.
Этот замок не является реконструкцией конкретного городища, при создании его крепостных стен и жилых строений были использованы образцы построек, найденные в различных населенных пунктах (Межотне, Талси, Рауне, Тенискалнсе, городище Ерсика, Рижском поселении и др.), создавая, таким образом, общую идеальную конструкцию замков предводителей племен балтов.
Здесь можно осмотреть жилые дома с небольшими курными избами, гончарными и кузнечными мастерскими, ознакомиться с реконструкцией костюмов, и получить подробную информацию о жизни древних латышей в поздний железный век.

Uldevena Castle is a twelfth-century ancient Latvian wooden castle, erected based on materials obtained from archaeological digs.
This castle is not a replica of a specific castle mound; when erecting its protective walls and residential buildings, samples of structures found at various locations were used (Mežotne, Talsi, Rauna, Tenīskalns, Jersika castle mound, Riga village, etc.), thus creating a general, ideal-type castle mound of Baltic chiefs. Here one can view homes with small smoke rooms, potters’ and blacksmiths’ workshops, view replicas of clothing, and obtain extensive information on life in ancient Latvia in the late Iron Age.
