Lethem is the capital of Region 9 and is a hub linking many of the surrounding villages to Georgetown. It is home to the Rupununi Savannahs, the largest open range Savannah in the world. It is also home to the Kanuku mountains

he lowland forests sustain 60% of all the known bird species in Guyana. 150 mammal species, or 80% of all mammals found in Guyana, live in the Kanuku Mountains. Prominent species include the Giant otter, the Harpy eagle and the Arapaima. The Kanuku Mountains rise to almost 3,000 ft.

Guyana: The Long Road to Lethem

We spent eight days driving and sleeping in a tiny rental car to get from Georgetown (on the coast) to Lethem (on the Brazilian border).

Guyana is a rough, beautiful, jungle nation in South America that can be horribly expensive for the traveler.

As such, it's one of the least-visited countries on earth!

But rental cars are affordable, and you can drive anywhere. Outside of Georgetown, Guyana is very safe, and people are friendly, helpful and everyone speaks English.

Highlights of our trip included:
-looking for the Cock-of-the-Rock bird
-packrafting the Pirara River
-severe thunderstorm in Kumu
-wildlife spotting in Surama
-accidentally staying in a brostel in Lethem
-surviving 800 miles of driving on the left!

10 Things to Do in Guyana

Get more Tips here!
Guyana is one of those destinations you wouldn't think as first on the list. However, this Caribbean country will surprised you for sure. Have a look of the things you can do there.

1) Spot the local wildlife
Not only the landscapes are beautiful, the fauna of Guyana is impressive. You should go there and it will surprise you with unique animals such as an anteater, a giant river otters, a harpy eagle, cock-of-the rock birds, black caymans and even a jaguar.

2) Go hiking
Althought the weather is very hot and wet, it's still a must do in Guyana. You can go to the Dolomites. Sometimes it has hard paths that will test your resistance. But in the end it will worth it. After a long day of hiking, you can always reward you with a nice meal, right?

3) Go on a boat ride
The best way to move around Guyana is by boat. If you go to the Rupununi rivers you won't regret it at all. Its local flora and fauna will amaze you as well as the beautiful landscapes that will surround you all the way, and make you feel alive.

4) Explore Georgetown
It's capital is a place you shouldn't miss. I's a colorful city full of local markets such as Bourda and Starbroek Market. Also, St. George’s Cathedral is one of the top Guyana tourist attractions and a must see. Plus a lot of more places to see. So, don't forget about it.

5) Walk through the forest
Well, taking into account its big jungle, of course, we recomendo you to go there and explore it. For sure, it will be kind of a new feeling for you. Inside the jungle birdwatching is a must do. But don't forget about the insects and muddy ground. Go prepared or don't go. We warned you...

6) Don't forget the canopy of Iwokrama
The Iwokrama Rainforest is a great way to appreciate the nature. You'll find a series of suspension bridges hoisted 30 meters above the forest floor from where where you could take the best pictures ever. The starting point is located at about 1 km from the lodge, via a walk in the forest and a staircase of around 160 steps.

7) Go to Kaieteur Falls
These are nothing like the Iguazu Falls or the Victoria Falls which are already wonderful. These falls will blow your mind with their spectacular views. The easiest way to go there is to taking a small plane in Georgetown, or you can always do a 5-day overland journey up river and go hiking.

8) Try the local food
Guyana melts different cultures in its food, such as Caribbean, Indian... and that will only get you licking your plate because of this absolutely delicious food full of tropical fruit and vegetables. However, keep in mind that the word “bake” in fact means fried dough of bread so that you won't have any misunderstanding

9) Sleep in hammocks
This is how most of the indigenous communities sleep and you should try it too. This experience is like being one to one with nature, alone in the dark, in harmony with the environment. It's one of the most special sensations that you can experience. Just do it!

10) Go to Rewa
Located in the North Rupununi region of Guyana, you must take an hour and 15 minutes flight on a 13 seater and a one hour boat ride along the Rupununi River, because it's completely isolated: no cars; no phone and no internet connection. But this is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Guyana to appreciate the wild nature and outdoor activities.

Would you ever thought you could do all of these in Guyana?

Follow Me around Lethem, Guyana - Brazil's Neighbour | #LeanafromGuyana

Follow me around Central Lethem, located in the Upper Takatu/Upper Essequibo ( Region 9) Guyana. Once you're in Guyana, all you need to do to get to Lethem is book a flight from the Eugene F. Correia International Airport ( located at Ogle, East Coast Demerara). This takes you to the heart of Lethem, where this video was shot. The approximate cost per passenger ticket is GYD$76,000 or US$380 return and GYD$43,000 or US$215 one way.

Once you get there, there are many hotels in Central Lethem but it is advised that you book prior to travelling. The average cost for a standard room, one night is GYD$10,000 or US$50. In this video you will see the hotel that I stayed at but if you're looking for a more spacious room with more amenities you can check out this video:

The best time to travel to Lethem is during April for their annual Rodeo ( pre-covid).

Guyana | Stranded In The Middle Of The Jungle With A Smuggler - Country #38 to Visit All Countries

In this video, you'll see and see my adventures in Guyana which is my country #38 in my quest to visit all 193 UN-recognized countries around the world. My time in Guyana is the most insane travel experience I've ever had in my life. I ended up taking a van to Georgetown from Lethem and turns out the driver that drove me and the passengers were a smuggler. He was caught by a police checkpoint in the middle of the jungle at 2am at night leaving myself and the other passengers stranded. We were attacked by mosquitoes that lay an egg inside your skin and if you scratch it off, you'll have an open wound for a week. If you don't scratch it off, then the eggs will hatch. The only way out of this jungle area was to get lucky and hitchhike the next morning.

Most Attractive Places in Guyana || Mew Play

For endless adventure, little-visited Guyana offers those in the know an authentic chunk of untouched South American wonderland.
#Shell_Beach
From March to August, Guyana’s endless swathe of unspoilt Atlantic coastline known as Shell Beach becomes the nesting ground to hordes of prehistoric-looking marine turtles. These turtles comprise four different species of the world’s eight most endangered turtles. The totally undeveloped seaside setting and the opportunity to experience this rare sighting makes the tropical coastline a natural paradise.
#Kaieteur_Falls
In the Kaieteur National Park on the Potaro River, the Kaieteur Falls are without a doubt Guyana’s most highly prized natural wonder. Some 30,000 gallons of water cascade down a sheer drop of more than 750 feet – almost five times the height of Niagara Falls – making Kaieteur one of the world’s largest and most ferocious waterfalls.
#Georgetown
For a dose of civilization before heading out to the remote savanna or jungle forest, the capital of Guyana, Georgetown offers a slice of lively urban life. Colonial buildings dominate the town’s architecture, telling the story of the city’s Dutch and British heritage
#Iwokrama Rainforest
Covering 3,700 square kilometers of central Guyana, Iwokrama is recognized as one of the last pristine rainforests in the world. Camps throughout the forest allow for visitors to get to the heart of the action, wading through the foliage to spot jungle wildlife or following the river to reach the Iwokrama Research Centre.
#Lethem
As the gateway to Brazil, Lethem makes a popular pit stop for those crossing the border by land and boat. Skirting the South Rapununi area and Kanuku mountains, it’s a rugged land of sweeping plains dotted with mango and cashew trees and the ranches of local vaqueros or cowboys. With its low-slung buildings and sense of remoteness, Lethem has its own charm. It also makes a good jumping off point for exploring the savannah further.
