???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE SHIRTS & MERCH:

Back in July of 2019, I spent 11 amazing days traveling around the diverse South American country of Suriname. These are the top 10 places you must visit in Suriname!

1. Paramaribo
Suriname’s capital and largest city. It’s a cosmopolitan melting pot where you can find a rich, colonial past and cuisines that range from Chinese to African to Indonesian to Indian to Dutch. You can also find accommodations for every budget!

2. Tamanredjo
A small town between Paramaribo and Albina. Most of its people are Javanese, and you can find incredible Indonesian chicken, fried banana, rice, and beans, at Warung Lenny’s restaurant in town.

3. Galibi
A small village located at the meeting place of the Maroni River and the Atlantic Ocean. There, you can find lots of outstanding seafood and, between February and June, you can find nesting sea turtles!

4. Brownsweg/Ston Eiland
A town about 80 miles south of Paramaribo, near Brownsberg Nature Park and the Brokopondo Reservoir. The reservoir and surrounding forest offers jungle treks, Howler Monkey Island, and fishing for piranha, and you can find Surinamese barbecue in town!

5. Atjoni
A tiny port village that provides transportation to villages along the Upper Surinamese river. Here, you can grab some Indonesian-inspired food at the riverside restaurant and take a boat ride to Isadou Island.

6. Isadou Island
A small river island in the Upper Suriname River that is home to the Isadou Resort. You can also enjoy delicious jungle food, take treks in the forest, take a dip in the river, search for caiman at night, and visit nearby Jaw Jaw village!

7. Browns-Mountain
A 500-meter-tall mountain in Brownsberg Nature Reserve near Brokopondo Reservoir. From its summit, you can enjoy views of the reservoir and hike to two different jungle waterfalls.

8. Palumeu
A tiny village along the Tapanahony River deep in Suriname’s interior. Take a hike through the jungle to Poti Hill, explore the primary and secondary forests, go fishing in the river rapids, and visit the village!

9. Lelydorp
A mostly Javanese village along the main road leading south from Paramaribo. It’s a great place to find unique handicrafts and Indonesian-inspired street food like lumpia, satay, chicken sausage, and boiled vegetables with spicy peanut sauce!

10. Johanna-Margaretha
An area east of Paramaribo near the meeting place of the Suriname and Commewijne Rivers. Watch the pink-bellied dolphins at sunset and have an Indian dinner at the Johanna en Margaretha plantation before heading out into the swamp to look for caimans at night!

And there you have it! Those are the top 10 places you must visit in Suriname. This country is so unbelievably diverse in terms of culture and food, and is also a gorgeous country that is largely untouched and unknown to most. You will love it!

Paramaribo Driving To Lelydorp From Airport Suriname

It was originally called Kofi Djompo but was renamed by Cornelis Lely (the Dutch governor of Suriname in 1905) and since then it is known as Lelydorp. Lely was responsible for many large water construction projects in the Netherlands.

The original name Kofi Djompo is said to refer to a maroon rebel leader called Kofi, who escaped by jumping over creek.[3] Kofi means born on Friday (Kofi Annan, for example, was born on a Friday). Djompo means jump. The hamlet started to grow when the Lawa Railway was constructed, but was mainly dependent on agriculture with cassave and asparagus beans as the main crops.

Lelydorp is more like a big village instead of a city. Wanica has a population of about 118,000 and an area of about 440 km2. With a population of this size, Wanica is one of Suriname's most populated and most urbanised districts. Lelydorp is the main village of the district with many shops, offices, and businesses, but still needs a clear city structure and has many agricultural areas close to the centre and neighbourhoods.

Lelydorp is also the most important halfway stopping point between Paramaribo and Zanderij, where the Johan Adolf Pengel Airport is located. Its population consists of a mixture of Javanese, East Indian, Creoles, and Europeans.Between 1890-1939 many people from Java settled into the area. Names of roads and streets in Lelydorp, like Celebesweg and Tawangsarieweg, are typical original names from Indonesia. The Saramacca River divides Lelydorp from Saramacca.

Lelydorp is home to the Caribbean Centre, a conference center founded by Bhai. On 16 July 2010, the Neotropical Butterfly Park opened. On 7 February 2020, the Regional Hospital Wanica opened in Lelydorp

Neotropical Butterfly Park in Lelydorp, Suriname

Welcome to the Neotropical Butterfly Park, the first butterfly garden in Suriname!
Plant-filled rooms, tiny waterfalls, and rocky ledges set the scene at Neotropical Butterfly Park, where you'll be surrounded by numerous fluttering insects. Initially a butterfly breeding ground, this park features different rooms for every stage of the butterfly life cycle. Also, find snakes, tortoises, and an insect museum displaying the indigenous critters of Suriname.

Just a short distance from the center of Paramaribo, surrounded by beautiful Surinamese butterflies, you can fully enjoy an instructive, but above all a pleasant day in a beautiful natural environment. Dozens of colorful tropical butterflies in the butterfly garden settle carefree on the curious visitors, the fragrant blossoms and the tropical fruit in their idyllic butterfly forest. Also visit our insect museum, the exhibition space, the beautifully painted panorama room and enjoy the wonderful process of the butterfly metamorphosis during the tour through the breeding facilities of Neotropical Insects.

Schools, parties, workshops, tour groups, young and old, Surinamese or foreigner, the doors of the Neotropical Butterfly Park are wide open for every guest or group. Visit us soon and let the unique world of the Neotropical Butterfly Park also enchant you !!

Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral in Paramaribo, Suriname

Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral in Paramaribo, Suriname
The Cathedral-Basilica of Saint Peter and Paul also called Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral is a wooden Roman Catholic cathedral located in the centre of the capital city of Paramaribo, Suriname. It is the biggest wooden structure in the Western Hemisphere, and the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Paramaribo.

The Catholic congregation in the city originally used a church adapted in 1826 from a Dutch Jewish theatre built in 1809. As the years passed, the church became too small for the growing number of Catholics in the city. In 1882 the diocese decided to build the cathedral. It was consecrated in 1885, but the towers were not completed until 1901. A major restoration was completed in 2010 and the cathedral was re-opened. The cathedral was designated as a minor basilica by Pope Francis in 2014.

When the congregation outgrew the building, the diocese decided to build a new cathedral. It was designed by Frans Harmes. Construction of the cathedral began January 30, 1883, on the site of a former Dutch Jewish theatre De Verrezene Phoenix, built in 1809. The cathedral interior is built of unpainted Surinamese cedar. Although it was consecrated in 1885, the towers were not completed until 1901.

A poorly done restoration was completed in 1977, but the building began to fall into disrepair, encountering problems with tilting and termites. In 2002 an extensive renovation was completed and the cathedral was returned to usable condition. With help of European Union-funding, formal restoration of the cathedral began in 2007 and, after 3 years, the church was re-opened on November 2010.

In 2009 the gate to the cathedral turned 200 years old.

The Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral is the largest wooden structure in the Western Hemisphere. The cathedral has two confession rooms. The Dutch-Surinamese priest Peter Donders, who had led the cathedral for years, is buried in here.

The building has three bells in the west tower. The name of the smallest bell is Alfhonsus and it weighs 222 kg. The biggest bell is named John and it weighs 827 kg. The middle one is named Rosa, and it weighs 413 kg.

The pipe organ was constructed in Germany and initially contained 1,550 pipes. Many of the pipes have been stolen over the years, leaving the organ with a value of 400 euros. After restoration, it is expected to have a value of around 10 million euros.
