There are several risks to consider when travelling in Africa. One of them is the risk of swimming in Lake Malawi. When I was meeting other travelers, I realized that there is not enough awareness among tourists about Bilharzia, an infection caused by parasitic worms that live in freshwater, including Lake Malawi. The chance of catching this parasite during the first bath is very high. Often you don't have any symptoms for a long time but the parasite can stay in your body for years, causing damage to your bladder, kidneys and liver, causing cancer at worst. Before leaving Malawi, it is very important to see a doctor to get the tablets for Bilharzia. As I was getting treatment for myself, I asked the local doctor a few questions to better understand the problem and to send the message out about the risks of swimming in Lake Malawi or even taking a shower at campsites located by the lake.

In April 2017 I left Australia for a solo trip around the world on a BMW F800GS. I named it “Are We There Yet” because I don't know my final destination or the duration of this journey.

Franek was diagnosed with cerebral palsy (weakness of the entire right side of the body) and he will require constant rehabilitation for the rest of his life. Dove puoi svegliarti nel silenzioso rituale del mattino, ed essere poi avvolto dalla miriade di fedeli che ripercorrono con scandite celebrazioni secoli di tradizione. Dove sarai catapultato in una rete di passaggi segreti sotterranei che ti condurranno fuori dal tempo, e se saprai seguire l’antica salmodia nel tunnel senza luce, senza timore, ti troverai nel cuore di un antico villaggio, arroccato a quasi tremila metri di altitudine: nel cuore sacro del Corno d’Africa.
Cos’è davvero Lalibela?
Costruita nel XII secolo da Re Gebre Meskel Lalibela, che a seguito di un sogno decise di fondare una Nuova Gerusalemme, e spostarvi la capitale di quel regno che discendeva dall’impero axumita e dalla regina di Saba, scavando nella roccia viva ben dodici chiese monolitiche ipogee dalla bellezza unica, unite da cunicoli che dall’oscurità vi porteranno alla luce di luoghi solenni, avvolti dall’odore d’incenso e da un canto senza inizio né fine: laddove è possibile ascoltare la propria voce.
Cos’è davvero Lalibela?
Scanalata con estrema precisione sulla cima dell’acrocoro etiope da innumerevoli fedeli, tra cui anche i crociati che invece di lottare per la Terra Santa, decisero di aiutare Re Lalibela a realizzare il suo sogno: una Nuova Gerusalemme d’Etiopia, scavata nella pietra secondo la leggenda grazie all’intervento degli angeli, per volere divino. Avvolta dal mistero, si dice che le monolitiche pareti delle sue chiese ipogee sarebbero servite a custodire l’Arca durante lunghi periodi di invasioni straniere: l’Arca dell’Alleanza, ovvero il Tabot contenente il decalogo, giunto in Etiopia nel X secolo a.C. grazie a Menelik I, figlio di Re Salomone e della Regina di Saba, e in Etiopia da allora custodito, secondo tradizione, sino ai nostri giorni.
Ma cos’è davvero Lalibela?
Forse non lo sapremo mai, o forse devi vederlo coi tuoi occhi. Ti troverai nella terra di confine tra storia e mito, tra fede e leggenda, tra realtà e fantasia. E quando tornerai, tra molte risposte e nuove domande ti chiederai anzitutto: perché non ci sono andato prima? Laddove è possibile toccare il cielo con un dito e aprire le porte dell’eternità: questo e molto ancora, è Lalibela.
