After three nights in Le Portel, we gained a fondness for the place. The actual choice for the apartment was a practical one. Then you google and check some information. One walks around town or the area and find, we landed at a gem of a wee place of which not many know it's name or story. We possibly didn't do it total justice but int he timeframe we had, we tried. Enjoy the walk.

Le Portel translates as the little port. The original Le Portel was a hamlet east of the town of Outreau. It became an independent municipality on 13 June 1856 by an imperial decree of Napoleon III.In the 19th century, flint tools were discovered in the centre of the village, by the river near the Hamel Bridge, evidence of the long occupation of the site. A Gallo-Roman cemetery has been excavated in the hamlet of Châtillon.
Of agricultural origin, it grew rapidly during the 19th century because of fishing, along with the nearby port of Boulogne-sur-Mer. Sailors of Portel were as numerous as those of Boulogne before World War I. In 1841, two Le Portel sailors were on the ship Belle Poule, that brought back the remains of Napoleon.
During the Second World War, on 8 and 9 September 1943, Le Portel suffered as part of Operation Cockade, a diversionary manoeuvre by the Allies to fool the Germans into believing the possibility of a landing on the English Channel. The bombings, which destroyed 93% of the village, also killed 376 civilians.[3] On 12 August 1944, Charles de Gaulle was at Le Portel for its liberation. The town received the Croix de guerre with silver star for its sacrifice.

A Walk Though Jardin Alsace Lorraine, Nice, France
The Alsace Lorraine Garden is one of the oldest public gardens in Nice. Opened in 1885 and subsequently named after the two historical provinces invaded by the Germans, the garden stretches on a surface which doesn’t even amount to one hectare. Yet, despite its size, it is a prized green oasis which enjoys a central location in Nice, and a shady refuge during the summer season.
The garden is laid out with alleys here and there lined with statues. The center of the garden is pegged out by a water basin embellished with sculptural works by Volti. Highlights in terms of greenery refer to one specimen of Magnolia grandiflora and to a Phoenix reclinata shrub.

Re-tour de France| Next stop Honfleur: Taking the coast road
After our wonderful stay and wander around Le Portel, it was time to drive to our second destination: Honfleur. We planned a road trip as close to the coast as we could avoiding highways and busy traffic areas. As always we planned a few stops to stretch our legs and enjoy the adventure, a coffee and more sights to discover. There was just so much to see. The bridge we crossed over the Seine was a true breathtaking treat I hadn't counted on.
