Grau-du-Roi, Beautiful Royal Provençal Port, Southern France, Immersive Virtual Walk, 4K UHD
On of the most popular Mediterranean seaside destinations in the Summer, Le Grau-du-Roi is a seaside resort town and a working fishing town on the Southern Coast of France. The beaches at Le Grau-du-Roi are long and wide and sandy, and the beautiful waters of the Mediterranean are shallow enough for easy wading.
At the end of the 16th century, a torrent of the Rhône River opened up a breach (called a grau) in the coastal barrier. This channel was called “Grau Henri” then “Grau du Roi” after the king Henri IV reinforced it by having two stone breakwaters built to protect it from silting. In the 18th century a channel was opened, leading from this sole maritime gateway in the department of the Gard to Aigues-Mortes. The town of Grau du Roi developed around this canal. Italian immigrants settled here in the 19th century and the main activity became fishing.
Since, the town has raised itself to the rank of second biggest French fishing port on the Mediterranean. In the Old Port you can still soak in the charm of the trawlers chugging in by way of the swing bridge, the fish market and the quays strewn with nets and bordered by restaurants with picturesque façades.
At the end of the 19th century, tourism began to develop. The arrival of the railway, the growing penchant for sea bathing and paid vacation time made for Grau du Roi's fortune.
Catamaran & cruises in the Mediterranean are available at this port. You can have short trips with lunch, fishing & dinner parties with these.

Une immensité sublime et désertique au sud de Port-Camargue et du Grau du Roi
Des dunes blanches à perte de vue, une nature sauvage et préservée, la Méditerranée pour seul horizon, vous êtes sur la plage de l'Espiguette ! Fleuron de la Camargue gardoise, cette immensité spectaculaire de sable, où dunes et littoral ont été particulièrement préservés, est l'une des plus belles et des plus grandes plages du nord du Bassin Méditerranéen. Située au sud de Port-Camargue et du Grau du Roi, à une demi-heure de Montpellier, elle déroule, tel un désert, ses 10 km de dunes et de plage sur pas moins de 700 m de large et est réputée pour la qualité de ses eaux de baignade. Véritable paradis terrestre pour les amoureux de nature et d'authenticité, elle offre des paysages saisissants qui séduiront les familles en recherche d'un lieu de baignade insolite et naturel et les promeneurs toujours en quête, en toutes saisons, de nouveaux paysages à découvrir …
Etonnant paysage que ces hautes dunes de sable blanc qui semblent s'étendre jusqu'à l'infini, prenant au gré du vent des allures de désert saharien où aucune construction humaine, si ce n'est le joli phare surgissant au milieu de nulle part, ne vient choquer le regard… La plage de l'Espiguette bénéficie en effet d'un ensablement spectaculaire : ses dunes en barkhanes (ou barcanes : en forme de croissant allongé dans le sens du vent et caractéristique des déserts) peuvent atteindre plus de 10m de hauteur. Depuis la plage, elles protègent les terres situées en arrière des entrées de mer lors des tempêtes, mais aussi la vue et offrent un paysage dépourvu d'habitations, commerces ou routes.
Véritable paradis pour les amoureux de nature et d'authenticité, elle constitue un endroit privilégié, très prisé l'été pour les bains de soleils et la baignade. Elle est d'ailleurs réputée pour la qualité de ses eaux (Pavillon bleu depuis plus de 20 ans) et plébiscitée par les familles, car on y a pied assez loin. Ici, petits et grands trouvent la place pour jouer ou se détendre, sans avoir besoin de se serrer. Attention cependant : une partie de la plage est réservée aux naturistes, renseignez-vous pour ne pas avoir de surprises…
Côté Port Camargue, la pointe de l'Espiguette forme l'extrémité de cet immense banc de sable isolé. C'est une formation géologique datant du 18ème siècle qui résulte de la dégradation des deltas et des bras secondaires du Rhône. C'est le terrain idéal pour de belles balades, notamment en automne, période où les touristes ont déserté l'endroit, et où l'on peut se sentir en phase avec la nature sauvage du lieu. Faites un tour par le joli phare perdu au milieu de nulle part : édifié et 1869, il est classé aux Monuments historique.
Côté Saintes-Maries de la Mer, s’étendent des dizaines de petites plages sauvages, protégées par des épis de pierre qui protègent le littoral de l’avancée des eaux et donnent l'impression d'être seul au monde. Derrières le cordon dunaire s'étendent les étangs salins et leur environnement si typique de la Camargue gardoise.
Ses paysages exceptionnels, son cordon littoral et dunaire unique et fragile, sa faune et sa flore typique en font un lieu d'une grande valeur écologique et font l'objet de nombreux travaux de préservation. Le site de l'Espiguette est classé Site Naturel depuis 1998 et labélisé Grand Site de France depuis 2014.
Ganivelles, passerelles en bois, signalétique pour sensibiliser les visiteurs, reconstruction et renforcement de 2 cordons dunaires… Autant d'aménagements dont l'objectif est de protéger au maximum la plaine de l’Espiguette, maîtriser le sable voyageur et faire en sorte que le site et ses nombreux visiteurs cohabitent au mieux.
L'accès à la plage de l'Espiguette se fait à partir du parking Les Baronnets, payant d'avril à septembre. Cette aire de stationnement surveillée sert à financer une partie des travaux de préservation et d'entretien de ce cadre remarquable. Vous pouvez également vous y rendre à vélo depuis Le Grau de Roi, Port Camargue.
Attention : l'Espiguette se mérite ! Du parking, il vous faudra marcher une centaine de mètre au moins dans les dunes pour accéder à la plage (plus, selon l'endroit ou vous voulez vous rendre !).
La proximité des étangs aidant, les moustiques peuvent s'inviter à la fête. Pensez à vous munir de répulsif.
