Santiago - Pucón (Ruta 5)

Santiago – Pucón (Ruta 5) is part of the
#patagonia #trip : a #travel video through #argentinia and #chile
6-8 October 2017

Our Patagonia Trip started in #Santiago. I know Santiago is not part of Patagonia. However we had to pick up the camper in Santiago.
The pick-up of the camper took several hours. After some shopping we only had time to reach Isla de Maipo. All of the #campsites were still closed in Isla de Maipo. We camped on a closed campsite.
The next day we continued on the Ruta 5. We wanted as fast as possible to Pucón. We considered #Pucón as the beginning of Patagonia. The #Ruta5 is a highway and very good to drive. No traffic jams at all! You only have to do a payment in every 40 km. That takes time unfortunately.
We camped on the parking of the Copec gas station on Ruta 5 close to Lautaro. Not looking for a campsite spends a lot of time and you can eat and drink something in the restaurant. You can even take a hot shower!
The third day is was only a couple of hours drive to Pucón. We took a break in #Villaricca hoping to see the Villaricca Vulcano. We had no idea where the Villaricca volcano had to be. Anyway, it was too cloudy to see it.
In Pucón we searched again for a campsite. We needed electricity. And we found it!

(EN) The track renewal works between Lautaro and Temuco were still in full swing. One day I had the good fortune to catch the noble D-412 locomotive - belonging to SAFER and assigned for moving and unloading ballast for the work -, which was just leaving Lautaro for carrying new ballast to some point on the track.

Soon, more rail fan videos.

Famous Chileans (Part 1)

Chile's first national hero was the conquistador Pedro de Valdivia (1500?–53), who founded Santiago in 1541. The Indian leader Lautaro (1525–57), another national hero, served Valdivia as stable boy and then escaped to lead his people to victory against the Spanish. His exploits are celebrated in the great epic poem La Araucana by Alonso de Ercilla y Zúñiga (1533?–96), a Spanish soldier. Bernardo O'Higgins (1778–1842), a leader of the fight for independence, was the son of the Irish soldier of fortune Ambrosio O'Higgins (1720?–1801), who had been viceroy of Peru. Diego Portales (1793–1837) helped build a strong central government. Admiral Arturo Prat (1848–79) is Chile's most revered naval hero because of his exploits during the War of the Pacific. Arturo Alessandri Palma (1868–1950), who became president in 1921, initiated modern sociopolitical reform. Salvador Allende Gossens (1908–73), the Western Hemisphere's first freely elected Marxist head of state, served three years as Chile's president (1970–73), initiating a broad range of socialist reforms and dying in the throes of a violent military coup in September 1973. The coup's leader was Gen. Augusto Pinochet Ugarte (b.1915), a former commander-in-chief of the army. Outstanding church figures have been Crescente Errázuriz (1839–1931), archbishop of Santiago, and his successor, José Cardinal Caro (1866–1958). Benjamin A. Cohen (1896–1960) was an undersecretary of the United Nations.

Patagonia Trip

Patagonia Trip (Trailer) by Mobile Home
#patagonia #trip : a #travel video through #argentinia and #chile
5 - 31 October 2017

Our Patagonia Trip started on the 5th October 2017 in Santiago. After a walk in Santiago we picked up the Mobile Home and drove the first kilometers to the south. The target was Punta Arenas.
We decided to travel fast to Pucón. From Pucón the real Patagonia trip would start.
One off the highlights mentioned upfront was the hike to the summit of the Villaricca Vulcano. That really had to be part of our Patagonia trip. Unfortunately the weather was not good enough to hike the Villaricca Vulcano. We had to wait 2 days in Pucón to be able to make the climb. These 2 days were not wasted. We hiked the 3 lakes trail in the Huerquehue National Park and visited a waterfall close to the Passo Chinay.
The hike on the Villarricca Vulcano was really fantastic. Unfortunately we did not reach the summit. However I skied down, alone on this mountain.
We crossed the border. The Patagonia trip went on to San Martin de los Andes. The 7 lakes tour was very beautiful. We were disappointed about the city of Bariloche. The Los Alerces National Park was very nice. We were only able to see 1 of the famous Alerces tree. Parts of the Alerces National Park were closed caused by recent fire or snowfall.
The Patagonia trip continued back in Chile. We drove on the Carretera Austral to the Hanging Glacier in the Quelat National Park. We followed the Carretera Austral further to the south and reached Puerto Rio Tranquilo. After visiting the beautiful Marble Caves our Patagonia trip crossed the border again to Argentina. In Argentina on the famous Ruta 40 we saw the emptiness of Patagonia. You can drive there for hours only seeing some guanacos. Before staying in the Estancia la Angustura we visited the Cuevas de los Manos. The ancient paintings are really well worth visiting it.
The Patagonia trip continued to El Chalten to make some hikes in the Los Glaciares National Park. It was very cloudy and windy.Unfortunately we did not see the Fitz Roy completely.
In El Calafate the weather was better. The sky was blue. We experienced the Perito Mereno Glacier and a cruise to the Ursula Glacier, wonderfull!
The next target of our Patagonia trip was the Torres del Paine National Park. We intended to stay there for 2 or 3 days. The first day was cloudy, but no wind in the morning. We enjoyed of the Grand Salto and some hikes. The next day it was raining cat and dogs. We decided to leave the Torres del Paine National Park without seeing the Torres del Paine itself. It rained for 40 hours. It just stopped raining when we arrived at the King Penguins, after the Kaiser Penguins on Antarctica the biggest Penguins on earth.
After reaching the Fin del Mundo (the End of the World) we went back to Punta Arenas where we ended our Patagonia Trip to drop off the Mobile Home and to fly back to Santiago.

Passing by central Chile

In the next two years I'm gonna film and edit every place I travel around the WORLD.
I'm excited to share with you my experience Central Chile.

Central Chile-
The most incredible thing about traveling central Chile is it’s diversity between snowy mountains and beautiful beaches. In two days you can find yourself climbing up a snowy volcano and catching a tan on a beautiful beach.

The places shown here:
Pucón - base of the famous mount Villarica climb. The city offers plenty of different activities: river jumping, skydiving, water skiing, snow skiing, white water rafting, kayaking, horseback riding, natural hot springs and zip line rides.
No wonder why this place is full with tourists and backpackers.

Mount Villarica - one of the most active volcanos in Chile. Famous for its climb up and the big chance to see lava.
Don’t miss out the fun slide down the snowy mountain on your bottom.

Viña del Mar - located an hour and a half northwest of Santiago. Known for it’s beautiful beaches. The town is a famous destination for Chilenos and Argentinos students during summer brake.

Valparaiso - one of the biggest cities in Chile, the city exemplifies Chilean culture. With festivals every year, street artists and musicians, it’s considered the “Hipster” city of Chile.

Border Crossing & Things to do in El Chaltén, Argentina (Patagonia Expedition #05)

In the 5th episode of the Patagonia Expedition we are doing the 2 day border crossing from Villa O’Higgins to El Chalten and explore the best Things to do in El Chalten.

The Carretera Austral is a 1200km long road in the south of Chile which connects the most remote areas of the country. The ruta 7 is a paradise for adventure seekers as it is a mostly unpaved road which brings you to the lesser known parts of Patagonia in the stunning Los Lagos and Aysen Region.

Our plan was to get from Puerto Montt till Villa O’Higgins by thumb to get in touch with locals and fellow adventurers along the way. After finishing this adventure in the last episode we wanted to get to El Chaltén in Argentina with a visit to the O’Higgins Glacier and an overnight stay at the Farm Candelario Mancilla.

To do the border crossing from Villa O’Higgins to El Chaltén one first needs to take a boat to cross the O’Higgins lake and get to Candelario Mancilla on the other side. We opted in for the additional boat excursion to see the O’Higgins Glacier and have some whisky with ice from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field.

The next stretch we needed to hike for 22km to Laguna del Desierto where we took another boat to cross over to the southern shore where we spend the night camping before hitchhiking the remaining 37km to El Chaltén.

El Chaltén is the trekking capital of Argentina and one of the best spots for hiking and climbing in Patagonia. From the several hiking options in this area we chose the popular hike to Cerro Torre and Laguna Torre first before hiking to Fitz Roy and Laguna de los tres on another dayhike.

This part of the trip was executed within 1week by using altogether 2 boat, 1 bus and one car - following I list all the places we visited & Things to do in el Chalten:
- O'Higgins Glacier / Bernardo O’Higgins National Park
- Southern Patagonian Ice Field
- Candelario Mancilla
- Villa O'Higgins
- O’Higgins Lake / Lago O’Higgins or Lago San Martin
- Cerro Torre and Laguna Torre
- Monte Fitz Roy and Laguna de los tres / laguna sucia
- Lago del Desierto
- El Chalten

Boat company at Lago O’Higgins (transfer Candelario Mancilla & O’Higgins Glacier):

I'm excited to share all our experiences in Patagonia over the course of the next 6 weeks with you. In the next episode we will hike the Huemul Circuit in El Chalten, Argentina and meet impressive characters along the way.

The Patagonian Expedition is a 95% self funded video documentary project following my trip in 2012/2013. Our aim is to show you the beauty of the rather unknown parts in Patagonia alongside with the famous spots.

Beside beautiful landscape you can expect loads of information and our personal experiences and struggles along the way.
