Rock-Hewn Churches of Lalibela, Ethiopia [Amazing Places]
The 11 medieval monolithic cave churches were built or rather carved from the rock by king Lalibela in the 13th century to create a 'New Jerusalem'. In the video: walk around the 11 Lalibela churches, beginning with a morning mass at Bet Giyorgis, and following with Bet Medhane Alem, Bet Maryam, Bet Danaghel, Bet Gabriel-Rafael, Bet Emanuel, Bet Abba Libanos. At the very end - Yemrehanna Kristos church, located in a natural cavern, 40 km from Lalibela, predating the Lalibela churches by a century. The Lalibela Rock Hewn churches are UNESCO World Heritage site.

Where to stay in Lalibela, Ethiopia
When I visited Lalibela in the Northen Ethiopia I stayed that Maribela Hotel Which was a good hotel. The view was fantastic and the location is about 25 minutes walk to the center of the town. The center of the town is very chaotic and too much construction was going on so it’s better to stay further from the center so this hotel is nicely located. The churches are closer to the center of the town, it cost one dollar to get a ride from the hotel to where the churches are one way. You just ask the hotel and they call one of those little Tuk Tuks. Panoramic view hotel and Mountain View Hotel both are near this hotel.

Lalibela, initially known as Roha, was the Zagwe dynasty’s capital in the 12th and 13th centuries. After the death of King Lalibela, the ruler credited with the construction of churches, the town named after him. Scholars and local tradition both believe that the churches date from around Lalibela’s reign in the 12th or 13th century.
BET GOLGOTHA, BET MIKAEL:There is a tunnel at the southern end of the Bet Maryam courtyard that connects to these twin churches of Bet Golgotha and Bet Mikael.They serves as an anteroom to the Selassie chapel(one of Lalibela’s holiest sanctuaries.)It contains three monolithic altars, one is decorated with a beautiful relief of four winged creatures with their hands held up in prayer; it’s thought to represent the four evangelists, unfortunately, the Chapel is very rarely open to the public.WE were lucky to have these ceremony at BETE GOLGOTHA CHURCH in LALIBELA.

Праздник православного Рождества в эфиопской Лалибеле, среди церквей, вырубленных в монолитной скале 800 лет назад. Эфиопия (прежде Аксум) - вторая в истории страна после Армении, принявшая христианство в качестве государственной религии, причём это православие. В Африке! Соответственно, календарь здесь юлианский, и ночь Рождества здесь отмечается с 6 на 7 января. При постоянном населении Лалибелы 5-6 тысяч человек, в это время сюда приходит 50-60 тысяч паломников, которые спят в шалашах или просто на земле. Атмосфера царит просто фантастическая!
