Panchet Dam was the last of the four multi-purpose dams included in the first phase of the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC). It was constructed across the Damodar River at Panchet in Dhanbad district in the Indian state of Jharkhand, and opened in 1959.
As a result of the catastrophic flood of 1943, the Governor of Bengal appointed the Damodar Flood enquiry committee to suggest remedial measures. It suggested creating an authority similar to that of the Tennessee Valley Authority in the United States. W.L.Voorduin, senior engineer of TVA prepared a preliminary report that outlined a plan designed to achieve flood control, irrigation, power generation and navigation. As a result, Damodar Valley Corporation came into existence in 1948 for development and management of the basin as a whole. While Voorduin envisaged the construction of eight dams and a barrage, it was later decided to have only four dams at Tilaiya, Konar, Maithon and Panchet, and Durgapur Barrage.
The first dam was built across the Barakar River at Tilaiya and inaugurated in 1953. Two years later, in 1955, the second dam across the Konar River was inaugurated. The third dam across the Barakar at Maithon was inaugurated in 1957, and the fourth dam across the Damodar at Panchet was inaugurated in 1959.
The Damodar forms the border between Dhanbad district of Jharkhand and Purulia district of West Bengal, before meeting the Barakar at Dishergarh and flowing fully through West Bengal. Panchet Dam has been constructed a little above its confluence with the Barakar. While Dhanbad district is on the northern bank of Panchet reservoir, Purulia district is on the southern bank. Panchet Hill rises above Panchet Dam.
Panchet Dam is 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) from Chirkunda on Grand Trunk Road, and 54 kilometres (34 mi) from Dhanbad. It is 20 kilometres (12 mi) from Asansol. The nearest railway station is at Kumardubi, 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) away, on the Grand Chord line.

The Barakar River is the main tributary of the Damodar River in eastern India. Originating near Padma in Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand it flows for 225 kilometres (140 mi) across the northern part of the Chota Nagpur Plateau, mostly in a west to east direction, before joining the Damodar near Dishergarh in Asansol, Bardhaman district of West Bengal. It has a catchment area of 6,159 square kilometres (2,378 sq mi). The main tributaries, Barsoti and Usri, flow in from the south and north respectively. Apart from the two main tributaries some fifteen medium or small streams join it.

In this video famous Dishergarh Kali mandir has been picturised... There is a great fair organised every year after Saraswati Puja by the temple authority.......When traveling around West Bengal, there are many places near Kolkata which one might quite likely miss upon. One such places is Asansol. Just 200 km from the capital city of Kolkata, Asansol is the second largest city in West Bengal and forms the headquarters of the West Burdwan district. Running parallel to the Damodar River, is the spiritual abode of Chinnamasta Kali, the avatar of Goddess Kali with her self-beheaded form.
Standing on the bridge over the Damodar River, you see a splendid landscape, in the backdrop of the yellow and red colored Chinnamasta Temple on the banks of Damodar River.
The Damodar River is the largest water body in the region and shares it waters with two states- Jharkhand and West Bengal. It is as famous for bringing in rich mineral deposits as it is notorious for its ravaging floods every year.

The church of Sacred Heart, Adra was established in 1918 under the Archdiocese of Calcutta. With the establishment of the hierarchy in India in 1886, the Vicariate Apostolic became the Archdiocese of Calcutta and His Grace, Mgr. Paul Goethals, its first Archbishop. In 1918, when the church of Adra was born, His Grace, Mgr. Brice Meuleman was Archbishop of Calcutta Archdiocese. (First P.P) Emile Courtin was entrusted to serve the people of Adra church. The successors of Fr. Courtin who enthusiastically served the parishioners were dynamic, unique and burning with missionary zeal. The parish was then a centre of 'family and friends' gatherings. The church had a Parochial Hall where several festivities and functions were held like Lotto, Jumble Sale, Christmas Dance, bulgar and milk powder distribution etc. The church building as it stands today was erected in 1928 during the term of Fr. Jules Van Butsele S.J. The parish continued to be under the Archdiocese of Calcutta till 1962 when the Diocese of Jamshedpur was created. It was during His Grace, Archbishop Vivian Deyer of the Bombay diocesan clergy that the 2nd Division of the Archdiocese of Calcutta was prepared and realized which resulted in the erection of three new dioceses, Jamshedpur, Darjeeling and Dumka. Calcutta Diocese lost Purulia district to Jamshedpur diocese and Sacred Heart Parish, Adra came under it. Jamshedpur was then under His Grace, Archbishop Lawrence Trevoe Picachy. However, as narrated by Rev. Fr. Francis Gomes ,an ex-Vicar General of the Calcutta Archdiocese and now retired and staying at St. Thomas Church Presbytery, Kolkata, it was not until 1975 when Sacred Heart Church started receiving the services of Jamshedpur diocese priests. Rev. Fr. Rapheal De Sa was officiating as the Parish Priest until then and he used to commute between Adra and Calcutta occasionally. Ever since, Adra Parish has grown in community and commitment under the Diocesan missionary priests who now enthusiastically carry the torch their predecessors handed to them across this century. Together with the Parish and Asst. Parish priests it is our challenge, it is our opportunity, it is our blessing to lead the Parish into its Second Century with as much vision, optimism and commitment as was exhibited by those who began its First Century.
