Exploring Billings: Lake Elmo, Historic Downtown & A Brewery
On this Airstream Life vLog, we explore Billings Montana. First stop is Lake Elmo State Park where everyone was out enjoying the water on a lovely sunny day. We decided to walk around the lake to get some exercise and enjoy it from all angles. Next stop was historic downtown area fo Billings where we learned history from the signs along the train tracks. We also got to see a bunch of varieties of hops used by all the local breweries. Speaking of breweries we then went over to Thirsty Street Brewing to enjoy some samples and finish off our fun day!

This Mississippi River town is a must-see as a day trip or stopover on a Great River Road trip as there are plenty of great things to do for any type of traveler. With the convergence of 3 rivers into one and nestled between the border of Minnesota and Wisconsin, this town remains a hidden gem in Minnesota.

Saint Paul is a city in the state of Minnesota. The capital of the state, Saint Paul is home to many attractions and events that are perfect for both locals and visitors alike. Inhabited by many cultures, Saint Paul is also one of the most diverse cities in America. At 240 square miles, Saint Paul has been home to people since at least 1660 when French explorers made their way up the Mississippi River from Louisiana.
In modern times, Saint Paul is home to many attractions and things to do. With a large art scene, Saint Paul has a lot to offer in the form of museums for adults and children alike. The Minnesota capital city is popularly known for being the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers. The city claims 26 miles of the Mississippi riverfront, which is more than any other city.
Its interconnection with Minneapolis on the west forms the “Twin Cities”. It is also home to the Cathedral of Saint Paul, the third-largest Catholic Cathedral and sixth-largest Church in the United States, and the home of the famous author, Scott Fitzgerald.

Lake Elmo State Park is a classic fishing spot located in the northeast area of Billings. Lake Elmo offers a little something for everyone looking to get out of the house without having to drive too far to get there. Since this is a state park, there are a few rules you should be aware of. The park is open from 5am to 10 pm year round. Since it’s a day park, there’s no camping and no camp fires allowed.

Lake Elmo is located in the Region 5 Eastern Fishing District of Yellowstone county in Billings. This is a stocked lake, and there are no fish consumption advisories at the time of recording.

Access to the park doesn’t get much easier than this so you won’t be needing 4 wheel drive to get in and out. Drive in access to the park is paved on the northeast entrance with a decent sized parking lot that should allow you to park your boat trailer with ease. You can also access the lake on the southeast side of the park, where the fish, wildlife and parks region 5 office is located. The FWP office also has a decent parking lot that leads to a short walk to the lake.
Lake Elmo is a great spot for swimming, as well as small watercraft like kayaks, paddleboards, and inner-tubes. If you just want to bask in the sun, the beach area offers plenty of space to catch a tan.
When it comes to amenities, Lake Elmo has no shortage.
• First, there’s a walking path that runs around the entire lake. This makes getting to a fishing spot really easy. If you’re not looking to fish, it’s also a great walking or biking trail. Several benches dot the trail as well.
• The site does have a boat ramp so this is a great place to bring watercraft.
• The fishing pier is a nice spot to cast out and relax on the benches and the guard rails make it safe and friendly for the smaller kids wanting to fish…. Oor not fish…
• Speaking of kids, there’s a playground back on the north side of the park for the little ones to enjoy.
• There are a few picnic shelters available for those that want to bring a group. There are bbq grills and plenty of trash cans throughout the areas.
• Dogs are welcome at the park as long as they’re on a leash, and there is a fenced dog park with water access where you can let up to 2 dogs off the leash to enjoy the park.
• There are public restrooms available and a shower for rinsing off after some swimming or hanging out on the beach.
On the insect side of things… we didn’t have issues with mosquitos, but the wasps were a little out of hand. We tried just about every spot around the lake and no matter where we went we had to fight off wasps. They’re especially thick near any of the garbage receptacles so be prepared for battle.
The lake is full of little critters from frogs to water snakes, and might be a good spot if you’re into bird watching as well.
We saw a few deer in the southwest portion of the park, and based on the location of the park, you shouldn’t need to worry about predators.
Let’s talk about the fishing. The FWP lists 20 different species ranging from both warmwater and coldwater classes. Lake Elmo offers anglers the opportunity to catch some classic Montana gamefish such as large and smallmouth bass, rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout, and of course the channel catfish. The FWP site didn’t show tiger muskies listed, but we know they’re in there. A look through the Fish Brain app confirmed that tiger muskies are being caught in Lake Elmo. If you haven’t tried the Fish Brain app, maybe give it a try. We use it to find new spots and see what people are catching. If you want to get the kids into fishing, there are plenty of sunfish around the lake shores that kids can catch all day long. We pulled pumpkinseed in for hours with a few worms.
Lake Elmo is a good spot for cast fishing as well as fly fishing. We didn’t run into many snags, but once the cat gear was in the water we did find more than a couple spots that gave us a little trouble.
Although it can get crowded with people, there seems to be enough room for anglers to spread out and find a place to get their line wet.
If you haven’t been fishing at Lake Elmo, we recommend it as a good place to catch without having to go too far out of the city limits.
