Waco, Texas - Overview

Day Trip to Waco Again ???? (FULL EPISODE) S11 E1

To most, Waco is a highway and nothing more. Just a pass-through, not a destination. But there is way more to this town than meets the eye, and to those who are willing to look a little deeper, Waco is much, much more.

You know what this is…it’s like a “Fixer Upper” Disney Land where you can buy every design thing you’d ever need, eat from local food trucks, hang out on the lawn or grab a cupcake from the bakery. It’s a really cool place!

Clint Harp is more than just the beloved carpenter of “Fixer Uppers,” he’s an artist who handcrafts incredible woodworks. Stop by his store to see his crafted creations, from kitchen items to expertly carved furniture.

One of the most amazing prehistoric discoveries was made in Waco, and YOU can tour it! This site is the only place in the world that a nursery herd of mammoths was discovered all together, and is still teaching us more about this extinct species.

True to their name, the “Fixer Uppers” Chip and Jo took the historic Elite Cafe, and turned into a new, yet still, iconic Waco restaurant. Stop in to try their farm-inspired menu with upscale comfort food and some of the best buttery biscuits you’ve ever had.

If you’ve ever wondered how Shiplap Cupcakes taste, you need to hit up this bakery, because (spoiler alert) they’re delicious. On the campus of Magnolia Silos is this little bakery where you can grab some treats to enjoy on the sprawling lawn outside.

You don’t have to be a college student to enjoy the hand-tossed, cheesy pizzas with gourmet toppings at this local favorite. Order a slice, or opt for the “Pizza Pillow” — meats, veggies and cheese all folded into a fluffy dough pillow — for a unique eat.

Surf, ski, and slide your way to fun at this cable park that has a little bit of everything. There’s a Lazy River, a Cable Park and a giant Surf Park, but one of my favorite parts is the Royal Flush — three huge slides that’ll shoot you through the air and splashing into the water!

Magnolia Silos Waco TX

Magnolia Silos Waco TX is also just called Magnolia Market. It is a large shopping complex that covers two city blocks in downtown Waco. The Silos were originally built in 1950 by the Brazos Valley Cotton Oil Company. They ceased operations in 1958. The were used as storage until the 1990's.

Chip and Joanna Gaines opened the Magnolia Silos to the public in October, 2015. They are best known as the husband and wife team on HGTV's Fixer Upper TV series. They completely transformed the silos and ground which lead to a resurgence of change in city of Waco. Chip and Joanna did a $10.4 million expansion starting in 2019. Currently the complex attractions include: Magnolia Market, Silos Bakery, Magnolia Home, Shops at the Silos, Seed & Supply, Magnolia Press (Coffee Shop), whiffle ball field, gardens, historic Waco church and food trucks and a great lawn. Magnolia Silos draw approximately 30,000 visitors every week and are closed on Sundays.

Magnolia Silos also hosts several large special events such as Spring at the Silos (March), Silobration (October: Featured in this video) and Christmas at the Silos. They also host other events such as concerts, vendor booths and other smaller events.

Outside of the Magnolia Silos complex, they also own Magnolia Table which is a restaurant and several bed and breakfasts that you can stay at.

They also own The Little Shop On Bosque which was the home of the original Magnolia Market. This serves as a discount store.

In addition to all of that, Chip and Joanna now run the Magnolia Network which is a brand new Cable TV network. It has replaced the DIY Network.

They have certainly built quite a little empire in Waco. If you want to learn more be sure to check out their official website:

Waco Mammoth National Monument

Waco Mammoth National Monument is part of the National Park Service U.S. Department of the Interior. This gained National Monument status in 2015 making this a new unit of the National Park System.

The Park itself is situated on 100 acres of wooded land along the Bosque River. The park has a visitor center which mainly serves as the bathroom as ticketing, gift shop and Ranger interaction has moved outside due to the Pandemic. Tents have temporarily been set up to handle the crowds to allow for more social distancing.

History: Paul Barron and Eddie Bufkin first discovered the Mammoth site while out searching for arrowheads and fossils along the Bosque River. They found a huge bone that was sticking out from the Ravine. They knew their find was unusual and took it to Baylor University's Strecker Museum (know known as Mayborn Museum Complex). The staff at the museum identified their find as a femur bone from a Columbian mammoth. The mammoths lived during what is commonly known as the Ice Age.

Baylor staff immediately organized an excavation of the site. The remains of 16 Columbian mammoths were discovered between 1978 and 1990. The mammoths found during this time can now be found at Baylor University's Mayborn Museum Complex. The fossils discovered after 1990 still remain at the dig site for viewing.

Scientists are still uncertain how all of these mammoths died at the same location. Human interference has been ruled out. One theory is that they all dies during a flash flood which explains the other animals found at the site.

Waco Mammoth National Monument: A Window into the Ice Age

Guess what? Waco Mammoth National Monument is like a super special place managed by the National Park Service, which is part of the U.S. Department of the Interior. It became a National Monument in 2015, so it's a fairly new addition to the National Park System!

This awesome park sits on 100 acres of wooded land right along the Bosque River. There's a cool visitor center where you can find bathrooms and even a gift shop. Because of the pandemic, things are set up a bit differently – ticketing, the gift shop, and talking to the Rangers all happen outside. They even set up tents to make sure everyone has enough space to stay safe and have a great time! How cool is that?

History: Paul Barron and Eddie Bufkin first discovered the Mammoth site while out searching for arrowheads and fossils along the Bosque River. They found a huge bone that was sticking out from the Ravine. They knew their find was unusual and took it to Baylor University's Strecker Museum (know known as Mayborn Museum Complex).
