The Dune of Pilat (French: Dune du Pilat, official name), also called Grande Dune du Pilat) is the tallest sand dune in Europe. It is located in La Teste-de-Buch in the Arcachon Bay area, France, 60 km from Bordeaux.
The dune has a volume of about 60,000,000 m³, measuring around 500 m wide from east to west and 2.7 km in length from north to south. Its height is currently 110 meters above sea level. The dune is a famous tourist destination with more than one million visitors per year.
The dune is considered a foredune, meaning a dune that runs parallel to a shoreline, behind the high tide line of a beach. The dune has been observed to move landward, slowly pushing the forest back to cover houses, roads and portions of the Atlantic Wall. To back this evidence of coastal movement, maps from 1708 and 1786 both place areas with the name Pilat to the south and off-shore of the current dune's location.
The area where the dune currently stands was referred to as Les Sabloneys, or The New Sands, until the 1930s, when it was renamed by real estate developers as the Dune of Pilat. Pilat originates from the Gascon word Pilhar, which refers to a heap or mound. On 24 January 2009, a peak windspeed of 175 km/h (109 mph) was recorded during a storm at the Dune of Pilat, damaging the dune.

BASSIN D'ARCACHON La Teste de Buch | Prés Salés Ouest (Arcachon Bay | The salt meadows west)
Bassin d'Arcachon, La Teste de Buch, Prés Salés Ouest. Sur le Bassin d'Arcachon, à deux pas du Port Ostréicole de La Teste de Buch, les Prés Salés offrent un magnifique paysage changeant au fil des saisons et des marées. Des oiseaux migrateurs y font souvent escale. Côté ballade, vous pouvez suivre deux parcours : le parcours des aigrettes pour découvrir les milieux salés sur 2,2km et le parcours des libellules où se mêlent les eaux douces et salées sur 2.4 km.
Deux points de vue à ne pas manquer : la digue (c’est la frontière entre le Bassin d’Arcachon et les prés salés mais aussi un superbe point de vue pour observer les oiseaux marins) et l’observatoire des miroirs d’eau (abrité par un joli kiosque en bois, vous pourrez apercevoir des canards colvert, des martins pêcheurs, des poules d’eau).

You can climb the side or the stairs to its peak. The long side faces the Atlantic, and there is a small cafe on the beach. Be careful if you are barefoot or in sandals, the sand gets pretty hot in the sun.

The dune is considered a foredune, meaning a dune that runs parallel to a shoreline, behind the high tide line of a beach. This breathtaking dune has been observed to move landward, slowly pushing the forest back to cover roads, houses and parts of the Atlantic Wall.
You can reach the location by car (from Bayonne, Bordeaux to the A660 Arcachon road), by bus from Arcachon, or by using the excellent cycle network along the dune and towards La Teste de Buch or Pyla sur Mer.
There is a spacious parking lot about 400 m away from the dune, which you will only need to pay for if you park your vehicle between 2 AM and 5 AM.
With more than one million visitors per year, the Dune of Pilat is a famous tourist destination.
