A STUNNING FRENCH CITY - La Rochelle and l’Ile de Ré ????????
La Rochelle is a lively, sparkling seaside French town with a great reputation for seafood, three urban beaches and the best old port on the French Atlantic. We parked our motorhome at the municipal Aire de camping-car de Port-Neuf which offers automated access with all services included for EUR 12.50 per 24 hours. The parking is conveniently located along a cycling route which will take you to the heart of La Rochelle old town in just a few minutes.
We cycled across the Pont de l’Ile de Ré to visit one of France’s most beautiful islands. If you drive across there is a toll but it's free for pedestrians and cyclists. The island is only 30km long and 5km wide and has some long sandy beaches, vineyards, beautiful villages of whitewashed villages, salt marshes and oyster beds.
The three towers of La Rochelle are the symbols of the city. The Saint-Nicolas Tower and the Chaîne Tower frame the entrance to the Old Port, while the Lantern Tower is 200 metres away. Built between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries, the three towers belong to the fortifications of the city and offer a superb view of the pier and the city.

La Rochelle is a beautiful French city on the Atlantic Coast in the Bay of Biscay. It was founded in the 10th century and became an important shipping port in the 12th Century when it was under English rule due to Eleanor of Aquitaine marrying King Henry II. It wasn't until 1224 that Louise VIII took it back in the 'Siege of la Rochelle'.

The next stop in our summer trip was La Rochelle and the area nearby. The city is very lovely, you can easily spend a few days there and there's so much to see and to do in La Rochelle and around!

La Rochelle is a city in southwestern France and a seaport on the Bay of Biscay, a part of the Atlantic Ocean. It is the capital of the Charente-Maritime department. With 75,735 inhabitants in 2017, La Rochelle is the most populated commune in the department and ranks fifth in the New Aquitaine region after Bordeaux, the regional capital, Limoges, Poitiers and Pau. Its inhabitants are called les Rochelaises and les Rochelais.
Situated on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean the city is connected to the Île de Ré by a 2.9-kilometre (1.8-mile) bridge completed on 19 May 1988. Its harbour opens into a protected strait, the Pertuis d'Antioche since the Middle-Ages. It is in fact a Door océane by the presence of its three ports (of fishing, trade and yachting). City of strong commercial tradition, its port was active from its origins and knew an important development during the classic period, then in the contemporary period thanks to the port site of La Pallice which is the only deep water port of the French Atlantic coast and hoists it henceforth to the sixth national rank.
The city traces its origins back to the Gallo-Roman period attested by the remains of important salt marshes and villas. The Dukes of Aquitaine granted it a charter of free port in 1130. The opening of the English market following the second marriage of Eleanor of Aquitaine in 1152, the presence of the Knights Templar and the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem, quickly made this small town the largest port on the Atlantic.
To this day city still possesses a rich historical, including its Saint-Nicholas tower, and urban heritage. The capital of Aunis has become the most important coastal city between the Loire and Gironde estuaries. Its urban activities are multiple and strongly differentiated. A city with port and industrial functions that are still important, it has a predominantly administrative and tertiary sector that is reinforced by its university and a rapidly developing tourism industry. In the recent years, the city has consistently been ranked among France's most liveable cities.

This is my La Rochelle Vlog, we will be spending a Weekend in La Rochelle. During our visit in La Rochelle, we visitied the 3 towers of La Rcohelle: Saint Nicholas Tower, Tower of Chains and The Lantern Tower. We visited the La Rochelle Aquarium. We ate ice cream from Ernest le Glacier.
