Cycling[edit]
Huy is home to the finish of the La Flèche Wallonne (English: Walloon Arrow; Dutch: Waalse Pijl), an important 1-day cycling race held midweek in mid-April. The race traverses, and finishes, at the summit of the Mur de Huy (English: Wall of Huy), a climb of about 1 kilometer with an average gradient of 10%, with sections of 20%. Huy has also been used in the Tour de France four times: 1995, 2001, 2006 and 2015.

A new fortress was built by the Dutch in 1818 at the same strategic location above the town. The 19th century was a period of relative prosperity based on the paper and other industries. The decline of heavy industry in the 20th century was felt here, as in other parts of Wallonia. Today, the city has started to prosper again, thanks in part to its tin products and tourist activity.
In 1970 the Tihange Nuclear Power Station was built.

Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Rouen #rouen

La cathédrale Notre-Dame, officiellement cathédrale primatiale Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption de Rouen, est le monument le plus prestigieux de la ville de Rouen. Cette église placée sous le vocable de Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption (voir Assomption) est la cathédrale de l'archidiocèse de Rouen, chef-lieu de la province ecclésiastique de Normandie. L'archevêque de Rouen portant le titre de primat de Normandie, sa cathédrale a ainsi le rang de primatiale.

C'est une construction d'architecture gothique dont les premières pierres remontent au haut Moyen Âge. Elle a la particularité, rare en France, de conserver son palais archiépiscopal et les constructions annexes environnantes datant de la même époque.

Comme la plupart des grands édifices religieux du gothique normand, la cathédrale est dotée d'une « tour-lanterne » sur la croisée du transept. La flèche en bois couverte en plomb de style Renaissance qui la couronnait fut détruite par un incendie allumé par la foudre en 1822. Elle est à présent surmontée d'une flèche en fonte, construite de 1825 à 1876 qui culmine à 151 mètres de hauteur. La cathédrale Notre-Dame de Rouen est la plus haute de France et était le plus haut bâtiment du monde au moment de son achèvement en 1876, et le restera jusqu'en 1880, détrônée par la cathédrale de Cologne (157 mètres). Elle reste néanmoins la troisième plus haute église du monde, dépassée seulement par celles d'Ulm1 et Cologne. Elle est également la cathédrale qui, par la largeur de sa façade occidentale de 61,60 mètres, détient le record de France.

Considérée comme « la plus humaine des cathédrales » par le manque de symétrie de sa façade occidentale, elle est mondialement connue, notamment à travers les 30 tableaux de la série des Cathédrales de Rouen, peints par l'Impressionniste Claude Monet.

Quasimodo n’est plus là. Esmeralda non plus. Le clocher du XIIe siècle était insuffisamment trapu pour soutenir les cloches et accueillir le bourdon. Il fallut donc lui construire un clocher personnel, détaché de la cathédrale Saint-André.

Le Mont-Saint-Michel est une commune française située dans le département de la Manche en Normandie. Elle tire son nom de l'îlot rocheux consacré à saint Michel où s’élève aujourd’hui l’abbaye du Mont-Saint-Michel.

L’architecture du Mont-Saint-Michel et sa baie en font le site touristique le plus fréquenté de Normandie1 et l'un des dix plus fréquentés en France - premier site après ceux d'Île-de-France — avec près de deux millions et demi de visiteurs chaque année (3 250 000 en 2006, 2 300 000 en 2014).

Une statue de saint Michel placée au sommet de l’église abbatiale culmine à 157,10 mètres au-dessus du rivage. Élément majeur, l'abbaye et ses dépendances sont classées au titre des monuments historiques par la liste de 1862 (60 autres constructions étant protégées par la suite) ; l'îlot et le cordon littoral de la baie figurent depuis 19796 sur la liste du patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO ainsi que le moulin de Moidrey depuis 2007. Par ailleurs le mont bénéficie d'une seconde reconnaissance mondiale en tant qu'étape des Chemins de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle en France pour « les pèlerins du Nord de l'Europe (qui) passaient par le Mont lorsqu'ils se rendaient en Galice »


En 2018, la commune comptait 30 habitants, appelés les Montois. L'îlot du mont Saint-Michel est devenu au fil du temps un élément emblématique du patrimoine français.


Géographie: Le mont Saint-Michel, situé à 48° 38' 10 de latitude nord et à 1° 30' 40 de longitude ouest, dans le « pays » de l'Avranchin, est un îlot rocheux à l’est de l’embouchure du Couesnon, lequel se jette dans la Manche. Pointement granitique d’environ 960 mètres de circonférence, cet îlot s’élève au-dessus d'une plaine sablonneuse à 92 mètres d’altitude. La construction de l'abbaye modifie cette perception : la hauteur du rocher à l'abbatiale fait 78,60 mètres, celle du sol de l'abbatiale au sommet de la tour fait 34,70 m, la flèche atteint une hauteur de 39,80 m. La statue de saint Michel de 4 m de hauteur culmine ainsi à 157,10 mètres.

Au niveau géologique, ce pointement est une intrusion leucogranitique (leucogranite à biotite et muscovite) de petite dimension mise en place dans le socle cadomien (encaissant schisteux briovérien) au cours de l'orogenèse calédonienne (525 Ma). Cette intrusion dégagée de sa gangue schisteuse et mise en relief par l'érosion (le leucogranite présentant une plus grande résistance à l'érosion que le schiste), offre une superficie émergée d’environ 7 ha, au-dessus de laquelle se dresse l’abbaye. La partie essentielle du rocher est couverte par l’emprise au sol de l’abbaye du Mont-Saint-Michel et de son domaine. Le rocher ne représente qu’une petite partie de la commune qui s’étend aussi sur la digue et plusieurs dizaines d’hectares de polders.

En 1846, Édouard Le Héricher le décrivait ainsi : « Le Mont Saint-Michel apparaît comme une montagne circulaire qui semble s’affaisser sous la pyramide monumentale qui la couronne. On voudrait prolonger sa cime en une flèche aiguë qui monterait vers le ciel (la flèche actuelle ne date que de 1899), dominant son dais de brouillards ou se perdant dans une pure et chaude lumière. De vastes solitudes l’environnent, celle de la grève ou celle de la mer, encadrées dans de lointaines rives verdoyantes ou noires »
