#11 ET NOTRE PROCHAINE DESTINATION EST ... ?

Clem & Quentin

Panajachel Town Fair (Feria de Panajachel 2019) | Lake Atitlan | Guatemala | Eo. 66

In this episode, we are going to an annual Panajachel town fair (Feria de Panajache). Panajachel is the biggest hub on the lake, which means it has more shops, supermarkets, cafés and a wet market. If you live on the lake, Pana is a good place for shopping if you are looking for something special. Besides, tourists usually arrive at Pana first and then go to another town on the lake by boat.

Feria de Panajachel is an annual town fair which is held on Oct 4. It’s a festival to honor San Francisco de Asís, a Saint who set up a church & monastery after the Spanish conquest of Guatemala. And he used Pana as a center to convert the indigenous people of the region to the Roman Catholic faith.

Every town has its own similar town fair but praises a different religious person on a different date. This is like a tradition back in the Spanish colonial period.

From my point of view, those religious people were here to manipulate thoughts and destroy the Mayan culture step by step. So I don’t get that why the local people are still praising those so called Saint?
There’s not much information online for me to learn more about it. Would you tell me more in the comment section? Meanwhile, I just treated it as a fun town fair.

We came to Pana specially to see the performance but we were a little too early. So we visited the market first. Pana has the biggest market on the lake. If you are staying at other small towns which don’t have a proper market, you might consider to do you groceries here.

Because of the Fair, there were more vendors that usual. We could see many antique toys, games, thrill rides, etc. The performance was very interesting with traditional outfit, music and dance.

There is usually firework at night. If you live in Pana, you might consider to watch it.

MAP OF GUATEMALA

hello hello my friends and fellow map lovers. this is a map of beautiful guatemala. Guatemala is mountainous with small patches of desert and sand dunes, all hilly valleys, except for the south coast and the vast northern lowlands of Petén department. Two mountain chains enter Guatemala from west to east, dividing Guatemala into three major regions: the highlands, where the mountains are located; the Pacific coast, south of the mountains and the Petén region, north of the mountains.

All major cities are located in the highlands and Pacific coast regions; by comparison, Petén is sparsely populated. These three regions vary in climate, elevation, and landscape, providing dramatic contrasts between hot, humid tropical lowlands and colder, drier highland peaks. Volcán Tajumulco, at 4,220 meters, is the highest point in the Central American countries.

The rivers are short and shallow in the Pacific drainage basin, larger and deeper in the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico drainage basins. These rivers include the Polochic and Dulce Rivers, which drain into Lake Izabal, the Motagua River, the Sarstún, which forms the boundary with Belize, and the Usumacinta River, which forms the boundary between Petén and Chiapas, Mexico.

A town along the Pan-American Highway within a volcanic crater.
Guatemala's location between the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean makes it a target for hurricanes such as Hurricane Mitch in 1998 and Hurricane Stan in October 2005, which killed more than 1,500 people. The damage was not wind-related, but rather due to significant flooding and resulting mudslides. The most recent was Hurricane Eta in November 2020. thanks for listening. if you made it all the way until the end, you are probably the first. hahahahaha hehehehehe, dont laugh, if you laugh you must subscribe to this channel for the best maps, and for the love of guatemala. Guatemala officially the Republic of Guatemala (Spanish: República de Guatemala), is a country in Central America, bordered by Mexico to the north and west, Belize and the Caribbean to the northeast, Honduras to the east, El Salvador to the southeast and the Pacific Ocean to the south. With an estimated population of around 17.2 million, it is the most populous country in Central America and is the 11th most populous country in the Americas. Guatemala is a representative democracy; its capital and largest city is Nueva Guatemala de la Asunción, also known as Guatemala City, the largest city in Central America.

The core of the Maya civilization, which extended across Mesoamerica, was historically based in the territory of modern Guatemala. In the 16th century, most of this area was conquered by the Spanish and claimed as part of the viceroyalty of New Spain. Guatemala attained independence in 1821 from Spain and Mexico. In 1823 Guatemala became part of the Federal Republic of Central America, which dissolved by 1841.

From the mid- to late 19th century, Guatemala suffered chronic instability and civil strife. Beginning in the early 20th century, it was ruled by a series of dictators backed by the United Fruit Company and the United States government. In 1944, the authoritarian leader Jorge Ubico was overthrown by a pro-democratic military coup, initiating a decade-long revolution that led to sweeping social and economic reforms. A U.S.-backed military coup in 1954 ended the revolution and installed a dictatorship.

From 1960 to 1996, Guatemala endured a bloody civil war fought between the US-backed government and leftist rebels, including genocidal massacres of the Maya population perpetrated by the military. Since a United Nations–negotiated peace accord, Guatemala has achieved both economic growth and successful democratic elections, although it continues to struggle with high rates of poverty and crime, drug cartels, and instability. As of 2014, Guatemala ranks 31st of 33 Latin American and Caribbean countries in terms of the Human Development Index.
Guatemala's abundance of biologically significant and unique ecosystems includes many endemic species and contributes to Mesoamerica's designation as a biodiversity hotspot.

Local Market in Xela Guatemala under quarantine | Ep. 99

Let's take a look of the local market in Xela, Guatemala under quarantine. This is the market I usually went before as it's just next to the central park. It is not a busy market but it is inside a complex which has different type of shops and food stalls. Now, most of them are close. But still I have no problem of getting fresh food. All stall have a piece of plastic at the front at protection. Venders are all wearing masks, some with gloves as well.
