L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue - A Wonder Provencal Village Discovering the Most Beautiful Villages in France

Capital of antiques and flea markets, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, very lively on Sundays and market days, is a popular destination for locals and residents passing through. Thanks to a preserved vernacular heritage and a high quality cultural program, the attractiveness of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue continues to grow over the years.

Springing from the nearby Fontaine-de-Vaucluse chasm, the Sorgue with cool emerald green waters meanders through L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. The mossy paddle wheels, remnants of the textile industry that ensured the prosperity of the city, still line the canals, where you can also see traditional flat-bottomed boats (Nègo Chin) typical of the place, once used by fisherman.

The capital of bargain hunters

With 300 antique dealers grouped in various sites (such as Ile aux Brocantes or the Village des Antiquaires de la Gare), L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue attracts bargain hunters from all over the world in search of rare pieces or trinkets unpublished. The big Fairs of Easter and August 15 (the latter is now shifted to autumn from 2021) bring together more than five hundred exhibitors and attract thousands of visitors who crowd along the quays and in the shops.

A living cultural heritage: the markets of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue
On Thursday and Sunday mornings, crowds flock to the streets of the city, the scene of a traditional market in Provencal colors: tasty early vegetables, cheeses and vintages from the region are among the products offered on the merchants' stalls. On the first Sunday of August, part of the market moves on the water: fruits, vegetables, lavender and soaps are loaded onto Nègo Chin, these typical flat-bottomed fishing boats, and offered to buyers. by merchants in traditional costume. Do not miss  !

L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is a Provençal town in the department of Vaucluse, southeast France. It’s known for its antiques stores and weekend markets, plus waterwheels on the Sorgue river. Campredon Art Center displays contemporary works in an 18th-century mansion. The Musée du Jouet et de la Poupée Ancienne showcases well-preserved vintage toys and dolls. Collégiale Notre Dame des Anges is a baroque church with frescoes.

L'Isle sur la Sorgue is one of those places in Provence that one has to see. This island city lies at the foot of the Vaucluse plateau in the plains of Comtat Venaissin. Its colors are nature's green and the bright reflection of the water shining from the several canals running through its center.

The river Sorgue surrounds the city as if to hug it. Walking along the canals you will notice how they run between the narrow ancient streets. There are little bridges to cross and great wheels to look at with mossy blades turning in the river. 1 kilometer from the city is the partage des eaux where the river splits in two and forms a small pond where plane trees and green foliage abound.

Long ago, the inhabitants lived off crayfishing (up to 35,000 crayfish a day!), and the silk and paper industries used those great wheels in the river for manufacturing their local products. History has left its mark on L'Isle sur la Sorgue and points out its importance in Comtat Venaissin in the 14thc. The Collegiate church Notre Dame des Anges has an exceptional Baroque interior and the 18th c. hospital pharmacy boasts a rare collection of Moustiers faience.

Also, magnificent mansions have been converted into art galleries, in particular the famous Maison René Char - Hotel Donadeï de Campredon (18thc.), now a museum exhibiting such great artists as Miro, Mauguin or Dufy and a display area dedicated to René Char. Antique lovers and art collectors will be gratified by the nearly 300 permanent antique dealers and second hand shops here.

L'Isle sur la Sorgue hosts antiques' fairs at Easter and over the August 15th holiday that have given a worldwide reputation to this small city. More than 500 antique dealers and second hand dealers gather here to show their treasures to customers from all over the world. This city is truly worth the trip! But just a suggestion: leave your car in the parking lot provided, and stroll around the town -slowly taking in the atmosphere and letting yourself be captured by its charms.

For more on l'Isle sur la Sorgue visit

Isle sur la Sorgue used to be a centre for silk production in the 16th to 19th centuries and the water wheels and canals that made it an industrial hub still decorate the town and make it a charming place to visit and explore.

The town lies about thirty kilometres east of Avignon and today although the silk trade has long since died out the town thrives on another industry; Antiques.

The town is full of antique stores and on Sundays these are joined by market stalls full of treasures. Great fun for browsing and haggling and you needn't feel intimidated as the quality of all items is assured by the French Company of antique collectors who are on hand to offer advice and opinions.

The huge canals and antiques arcades in Isle sur la Sorgue make it a fun place to explore and you may find a hidden treasure to take home as a souvenir.

Amazing Floating market of l'Isle sur la Sorgue

The floating market of l'Isle sur la Sorgue takes place each year on the first Sunday of August, at the same time as the famous Sunday morning market. It opens around 9am on the branch of the Sorgue across from the public garden and finishes around 12:30pm.

The nego chins, boats typical to l'Isle sur la Sorgue, slip across the water from one bank to the other to answer the public's call and offer you a dance of colours and scents (local production including fruits and vegetables, bouquets of flowers, cheese, wine, bread...). You can fill your shopping baskets while enjoying the traditional Provençal costumes, music and the vibrant and sung commentary.... But for all that, it's best to arrive early because access can be difficult!

As the floating market draws to a close, the nego chins gather in a line and, along with the sellers in the traditional market, the boatmen sing the famous Coupo Santo that celebrates Provence.
