Bordeaux - The Pearl of Aquitaine - France Travel Guide - Travel & Discover

The Bordeaux's nicknames are La perle d'Aquitaine (The Pearl of Aquitaine), and La Belle Endormie (Sleeping Beauty) in reference to the old center which had black walls due to pollution. Nowadays, this is not the case. In fact, a part of the city, Le Port de La Lune, was almost completely renovated.

The wine regions of Bordeaux are a large number of wine growing areas, differing widely in size and sometimes overlapping, which lie within the overarching wine region of Bordeaux, centred on the city of Bordeaux and covering the whole area of the Gironde department of Aquitaine.
The Bordeaux region is naturally divided by the Gironde Estuary into a Left Bank area which includes the Médoc and Graves and a Right Bank area which includes the Libournais, Bourg and Blaye.
The Médoc is itself divided into Haut-Médoc (the upstream or southern portion) and Bas-Médoc (the downstream or northern portion, often referred to simply as Médoc).
There are various sub-regions within the Haut-Médoc, including St-Estèphe, Pauillac, St-Julien and Margaux and the less well known areas of AOC Moulis and Listrac.
Graves includes the sub-regions of Pessac-Léognan and Sauternes (among others), and Sauternes in turn includes the sub-region of Barsac.
The Libournais includes the sub-regions of Saint-Émilion and Pomerol (among others).
There is an additional wine region of Entre-Deux-Mers, so called because it lies between the Garonne and Dordogne rivers, which combine to form the Gironde.
This region contains several less well known sweet wine areas of Cadillac and St. Croix de Mont.
All of these regions (except the Libournais) have their own appellation and are governed by Appellation d'origine contrôlée laws which dictate the permissible grape varieties, alcohol level, methods of pruning and picking, density of planting and appropriate yields as well as various winemaking techniques.
Bordeaux wine labels will usually include the region on the front if all the grapes have been harvested in a specific region and the wine otherwise complies with the AOC requirements.
There are about 50 AOCs applicable to the Bordeaux region.
Both red and white Bordeaux wines are almost invariably blended.
The permissible grape varieties in red Bordeaux are: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot.
While wine making styles vary, a rule of thumb is that the Left Bank is predominately Cabernet Sauvignon based with the Right Bank being more Merlot based.
The Graves area produces both red wine (from the grapes previously mentioned) and white wine from the Sauvignon blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle grapes.
The area of Sauternes (including Barsac) is known for its botrytized dessert wines.

Les Sources de Caudalie Bordeaux France

Sign Up now for your free membership and benefit from exclusive perks and promotions in over 2000 luxury hotels worldwide.

The attentions of a Palace, the warmth of a family home - It is in the heart of Château Smith Haut Lafitte, Grand Cru Classé, born in 1999 Les Sources de Caudalie. The concept's origin is inspired by the French Paradox discovered more than 20 years ago, which values wine consumption benefits against cardiovascular diseases. Between vineyards and forests, at the gates of Bordeaux, the architect Yves Collet imagined a whole in total harmony with the surrounding environment. This contemporary design enriched with materials and recovery structures makes this house a place dedicated to the art of living in the heart of the vineyards.

Les Sources de Caudalie, located among the vineyards of Château Smith Haut Lafitte, a Graves remarkable growth, was established in 1999. The concept behind Les Sources de Caudalie is inspired by the French Paradox, discovered over 20 years ago. It refers to a study proving that the French diet and lifestyle, particularly in Southwest France, is conducive to good health. Between vineyards and forests, at only 20 minutes from Bordeaux center, the architect Yves Collet created from scratch contemporary buildings from local recycled materials in tune with the surroundings.

Alice and Jérôme Tourbier have managed Les Sources de Caudalie for the past ten years in keeping with the values they hold dear: well-being, generosity, authenticity, high-quality service, and emotion. Welcome to a universe where everything is devoted to nature, taste, and senses.

Discover the sports activities offered indoors or in the middle of nature - a warmed outdoor swimming pool, an exceptional indoor pool, an outdoor Jacuzzi, the gym overlooks the vineyards, an outdoor tennis court, bikes to go for a stroll in the forest or to visit the nearby wineries, jogging trail in the private woods.

Gastronomy - Here, time stands still - In the heart of the Graves vineyard, around the Restaurant La Grand'Vigne, was born an entire ecosystem of happiness. The vine, naturally and the horses, the vegetable garden, or the cooper, are the actors of a live show evolving with the seasons. Land of Vines - Without wine, the favorite fruit of this land, the experience would not be complete. The plates thus sublimate the sumptuous palette of Pessac-Léognan wines and elsewhere staged by Chef Sommelier Aurélien Farrouil. Immerse yourself in this environment and take the time to enter a parenthesis, that of a simple, authentic, peaceful life. That of an original emotion: The Art of Vine.

Chef Nicolas Masse likes to feel close to this land and those who cultivate its fruits. Like a winemaker, he seeks to express the very essence of this exceptional terroir and its products: he assembles and composes, ultimately retaining only the essentials.

Restaurant - La Table Du Lavoir - Terroir & Traditions - The purpose of La Table du Lavoir is to serve an elaborate and original bistro cuisine, varying with the seasons. In the extended period fireplace, the meats roast and give off their delicious smells while the gourmands read the menus written on old beaters. Mismatched pieces of silverware, bought by weight, are used alongside traditional and old fabrics to dress the tables in the Lavoir. The Old Washhouse - In the center of the room, the washhouse, reconstructed stone by stone, pays tribute to the women of the winegrowers who, in the 19th century, came to wash their clothes in this space. The frame was built from 18th-century wood salvaged from the cellars of Lafite-Rothschild, and the glass doors with small wood open on warm days to access the sheltered terrace.

Red Wine Bar - Gourmet Grocery & Wine Bar - Discover the gourmet grocery store and RED wine bar, a place of life and sharing where we drink, savor and enjoy good times with family or friends! A wide selection of wines from Bordeaux and elsewhere is savored on the spot (or to take away) and accompany delicious products from the South West. The pleasant terrace makes the place a friendly and relaxed place to enjoy the long summer nights. Poolside Gourmet Break - Bathed in light, the indoor pool at Les Sources de Caudalie lights up, and the veins of the leaves appear as if by magic. Take advantage of the indoor pool for a few lengths and fill it up with an assortment of RED tapas, gourmet groceries, and a wine bar.

Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte (Bordeaux-Martillac, France) - The Best Wineries of the World

Château Smith Haut Lafitte is a Bordeaux wine from the Pessac-Léognan appellation, ranked among the Premiers Crus for red wine in the Classification of Graves wine of 1953 and 1959. The winery and vineyards are located south of the city of Bordeaux, in the commune of Martillac.

The estate originates in the 17th century with the house of Du Boscq who planted vines on a gravelly plateau named Lafitte. In 1720 it was bought by Georges Smith who added his name to the lieu-dit.

In 1990, Daniel Cathiard fell in love with the property and joined the list of prestigious owners, firmly intending to further enhance Smith Haut Lafitte's tradition of excellence. He combined the most modern winemaking techniques and age-old traditional methods: organic compost, return to small wooden vats, ageing on the lees in barrel, etc.

Famous around the world for its wonderfully elegant red wine and the sophisticated bouquet of its white, Smith Haut Lafitte undoubtedly deserves the special care that is lavished on it.

The winery offers accommodation in the luxury boutique hotel.

Strolling in Bordeaux Old Town, France ????????

Inday felt an immediate connection to Bordeaux. The city's deep appreciation for art, history, and gastronomy resonated with her own cultural values. As she strolled along the quays of the Garonne River, she couldn't help but admire the stunning blend of architectural styles—medieval, Renaissance, and neoclassical—that adorned the city's buildings. It was like stepping into a living museum, where the stories of centuries past whispered through the very stones beneath her feet.
