Driving Greece: EO9A & A7 Kyparissia - Kalamata - 4k scenic drive through The Peloponnese
We are travelling now through the west side of The Peloponnese peninsula, while driving from the coastal town of Kyparissia to the main town of Kalamata, the second biggest on the peninsula. We cross the hilly inland, driving through beautiful olive trees plantations, until joining the A7 motorway about 30kms north of Kalamata.

Kyparissia is a town that is administratively part of the municipality of Trifilia and is located northwest of the Prefecture of Messinia, in the Peloponnese.
It has 5.131 inhabitants and is the fourth largest city in the Prefecture of Messinia.
Kyparissia is the agricultural and commercial center of Trifylia.
Its history is very long and in line with that of the Peloponnese. Its beginning is lost in the depths of prehistory. During the Homeric years Kyparissia was called Kyparissientas and belonged to the kingdom of Pylos, king Nestor. Later the area was enslaved to Ancient Sparta along with the rest of Ancient Messinia. Many have been interested in the city's strategic location for centuries:
In the place of the ancient Acropolis a castle was built during the Byzantine years, after which the Turkish and Franciscan conquerors rebuilt the fortress by making the necessary additions giving it its present form.
During the Turkish occupation Arcadia, as Kyparissia was called in the Middle Ages, had a privileged position as a commercial center of the region. Its present name is due to King Otto. In Kyparissia, tombs of the Classical and Roman era were discovered, and at the top of Mount Cold today is its Frankish Castle.

Στη θέση της αρχαίας Ακρόπολης χτίστηκε κάστρο κατά τα Βυζαντινά χρόνια, στη συνέχεια οι Τούρκοι και Φράγκοι κατακτητές ανακατασκεύασαν το φρούριο κάνοντας τις απαραίτητες προσθήκες δίνοντας του τη σημερινή του μορφή.
Κατά τη διάρκεια της Τουρκοκρατίας η Αρκαδιά, όπως ονομαζόταν το Μεσαίωνα η Κυπαρισσία, είχε προνομιούχο θέση ως εμπορικό κέντρο της περιοχής. Το σημερινό της όνομα οφείλεται στον Βασιλιά Όθωνα. Στην Κυπαρισσία ανακαλύφθηκαν τάφοι της Κλασικής και Ρωμαϊκής εποχής, ενώ στην κορυφή του όρους Ψυχρό διασώζεται σήμερα το Φράγκικο Κάστρο της.
