It commemorates the epic exodus by disillusioned Boers from the Cape into the interior, which laid the foundation for the borders of present day South Africa.
In 1834 slavery was abolished throughout the British Empire. This was highly unpopular with the Boers and became the focal issue of greater disaffection.
In what has come to be known as the Great Trek, thousands of Boers began migrating from the Cape in late 1835. Beyond the border they fanned out, with most choosing to continue either into the central interior or north-east into present day KwaZulu-Natal.

ROAM Private Game Reserve | Great Karoo, South Africa
Roam Private Game Reserve is located on 5000 hectares of malaria-free scrubveld in the Great Karoo, an ancient and endless semi-desert landscape covering 400,000 square kilometers in its entirety.
The focus at Roam is on eco-tourism and providing visitors with the opportunity to experience the remote wilderness of the Western Cape's Karoo region. The team at Roam have many conservation initiatives focusing on rewilding the Great Karoo. Knowledgeable guides will take you on a once in a lifetime adventure tracking wild cheetah on foot through this vast and picturesque landscape.

Melrose House became famous during the Second Boer War (1899 to 1902) because it was used as the headquarters of the British forces. For 18 months, the war effort against the Boers was strategised from 275 Jacob Mare Street. The Peace Treaty of Vereeniging that ended the war was signed around the massive dining table at Melrose House on 31 May 1902.
Life of a Lion: John Hodgson
The 2021 Tour to South Africa has taken on extra significance for Springbok Jesse Kriel thanks to a “special” gesture from The British & Irish Lions.
The utility back took to Twitter last month to reveal his great grandfather, John Hodgson, played in the famous red jersey and that his cap, Lion No.265, had now been sent to his family by the Lions.
Hodgson was a member of the 1930 Tour to Australia and New Zealand, with the loose forward playing two Test matches against the All Blacks 90 years ago.
