Things to do in Stellenbosch, South Africa Travel Guide Video Transcript:

On our very first trip to South Africa we spent one day in Stellenbosch where we did a wine tour and hit up a total of 5 wineries. It was an action packed day but we knew we had only seen a fraction of what this place has to offer and we were itching to return! Fast forward two years, and we found ourselves with an invitation to come and experience Stellenbosch, this time with a week to spare. Naturally we said yes! This being the winelands meant that our itinerary was wine heavy, but we also got to see sample the food, visit the markets, check out the nightlife and get close to nature. The following is our travel guide to Stellenbosch, pour yourself a glass of wine, sit back, and join us on this ride!

In between all the feasting and vineyard hopping, we also found a bit of time to explore Stellenbosch itself. Stellenbosch is a charming town located in the Western Cape, and it’s the second oldest European settlement in the province after Cape Town. The streets are lined with oak trees, the buildings are all painted white, and you have a cool mix of Early Cape, Cape Dutch, and Victorian architecture.

And while Sam was off hiking, I did a biking tour of Stellenbosch with the Adventure Shop, where I learned a bit more about the town’s history, and got out in nature, before biking over to the Lanzerac Wine Estate where we met up with the group again. Here we had a light lunch featuring a spread of cheese, deli meats, fresh fruits, and of course, wine!

And just like that our week in Stellenbosch was over! I think it’s fair to say that we left a few pounds heavier, but with a newfound appreciation for South African wine and a taste of what the winelands have to offer. As always, we hope you enjoyed this travel guide and that it gave you a few ideas of things to do in Stellenbosch. If you have any other suggestions of cool things to see, eat, or experience, feel free to share those with travellers in the comments below. In the meantime we wish you happy travels and we’ll see you in Cape Town on our next video!

This is part of our Travel in South Africa video series showcasing South African food, South African culture, South African wine and South African cuisine.

S1 – Ep 316 – Rietfontein – A Border Town Between South Africa and Namibia!

Our drive through Rietfontein, a town located on the border of South Africa and Namibia, was an intriguing experience. Our first stop was at the border post itself and it was remarkably quiet, giving off a sense of tranquility amidst the surrounding wilderness. As we explored the town, one particular attraction caught our attention, the Rhenish Mission church. We were astounded to learn that the church was established in 1885 left. We marvelled at the historical significance it held. Although we were unable to enter the building, the exterior alone was enough for us to appreciate its beauty and historical value. For our overnight stay, we chose the Kalahari Info Centre, which proved to be an exceptional choice. This place provided us with a memorable and enjoyable experience. Rietfontein itself turned out to be a captivating town, with its unique blend of history, natural beauty, and the fascinating presence of the border post. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #rietfontein #borderpost

Buh-Rein Estate, Cape Town, South Africa

Buh-Rein Estate is a Lifestyle development Durbanville in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town South Africa.

The Developer, MSP developments, followed a holistic approach to the planning of the estate and has won numerous awards for the ingenuity in the overall design applied.

From their Website:
Buh-Rein Estate offers a rich indigenous environment.
Buh-Rein has got the balance right between strategically placed utilities and environmental considerations.
Indigenous vegetation attracts endemic bird and insect species, freshens the air and cools temperatures – important in a development that has a lot of building fabric, as Buh-Rein does. The landscaping comprises over 2000 trees: Species including Cape Ash (Ekebergia capensis) and Waterberry (Syzygium) create shady areas along the streets and in the park areas while Yellowwoods (Podocarpus falcatus) are set to line adjacent Darwin Road, taking the greenery even beyond the estate walls.
Running through the middle of Buh-Rein is a linked series of 10 detention ponds that filter and transport stormwater. This green zone falls in the powerline servitude and serves a vital water drainage role, but it has also been landscaped for the enjoyment of residents – not to mention the local birdlife. A well-lit, paved pedestrian path meanders around the outside of the ponds, making the area charming by day or night. Strollers can cross the ponds on timber bridges, placed at various crossing points.
All the plants at Buh-Rein are water-wise and are irrigated using treated effluent water. This adds another string to Buh-Rein’s bow as a “green estate”.
