Kuragala is a vast Buddhist monastery complex 18 km’s off Balangoda on the Kaltota road. This complex covers number of rock outcrops which is collectively known as Kuragala. The ruins of the complex dates back to the 2nd centaury BC and has been declared a archeological reserve by the the government. The Monastery covers 30-40 rock caves, some capable of holding 2000-3000 people.
According to archaeologist Ven. Ellawala Medhananda Thero, this monastery has been called ‘Thandulayia Pabbatha‘ in ancient times.

The Kotte Kingdom, also known as the Kingdom of Kotte, was a medieval Sinhalese kingdom established in the 15th century on the island of Ceylon (modern-day Sri Lanka). Here's a brief overview:
Founding: The Kingdom of Kotte emerged as a separate entity during the 15th century from the weakening Kingdom of Gampola. Alagakkonara, a powerful military leader, is said to have been instrumental in founding the city of Kotte.
#Alagakkonara (or #Alakeshvara) is an important figure in the history of Sri Lanka during the transition from the 14th to the 15th centuries. The Alagakkonara family played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Kingdom of Kotte. Here are some key points about Alagakkonara:
Origins: The exact origins of the Alagakkonara family are a matter of debate. Some sources suggest that they were originally from South #India, while others believe they were native Sinhalese.
Establishment of Kotte: #Alagakkonara is credited with constructing the #fortress of Kotte, situated in a marshy region, which became the nucleus of the Kingdom of Kotte. The fortress's strategic location made it a powerful base for the Alagakkonara family.
Rise to Power: The Alagakkonara family rose to prominence during a period of political fragmentation in Sri Lanka. They became influential ministers and officials in the Sinhalese kingdoms, especially during the decline of the Kingdom of #Gampola.
Conflict with Ming #China: One of the significant events during the reign of the Alagakkonara was the conflict with the envoys of the #Ming_Dynasty of China. Admiral #Zheng He's fleet visited the island during their famous treasure #voyages. There was a disagreement or conflict, which led to the brief capture of the Alakeshvara (a title referring to a leader of the Alagakkonara clan) and his family, who were taken to China. However, they were later released and sent back to Sri Lanka.
Legacy: The Alagakkonara family's influence laid the foundation for the rise of the Kingdom of Kotte, which would later become a major power in the region. The fortified city of Kotte, their most enduring legacy, would go on to serve as the capital for the Kotte Kingdom and its successors.
Golden Era: The kingdom reached its zenith during the reign of King #Parakramabahu VI (1412-1467). He was able to bring almost the entire island under the Kotte rule, except for the Kingdom of Jaffna in the far north.
Decline: After the death of Parakramabahu VI, the kingdom began to fragment due to internal strife. It split into three smaller kingdoms: #Sitawaka, #Rayigama, and Kotte.
#Portuguese Influence: By the early 16th century, the Portuguese had arrived in Sri Lanka. Their influence grew rapidly in the region, and they started to intervene in the affairs of the local kingdoms.
Religion: #Buddhism was the main religion in Kotte, as with other Sinhalese kingdoms. The kingdom was a significant patron of Buddhist arts, literature, and temples.
The Kotte period is #crucial in Sri Lankan history as it set the stage for the coming centuries of #European influence and colonial rule, starting with the Portuguese, followed by the #Dutch, and then the #British.

Tunnels are an important feature of a fortification which serves as an escape for the occupants under a siege and also to attack the enemy by surprise.
