FAROE ISLANDS ????????/Visit Klaksvík and The Capital Tórshavn/Färöer Inseln

Visit Faroe Islands, a day in the Capital Torshavn and a visit to Klaksvik on the northern Islands, during summer 2019

The Faroe Islands (/ˈfɛəroʊ/; Faroese: Føroyar, pronounced [ˈfœɹjaɹ]; Danish: Færøerne, pronounced [ˈfæɐ̯øːˀɐnə]), or the Faeroe Islands, is a North Atlantic archipelago located 320 kilometres (200 mi) north-northwest of Scotland, and about halfway between Norway and Iceland. It is an autonomous territory[8] within the Kingdom of Denmark. The islands have a total area of about 1,400 square kilometres (540 sq mi) with a population of 51,783 as of June 2019.[3]

The terrain is rugged; the climate is subpolar oceanic climate (Cfc)—windy, wet, cloudy, and cool. Temperatures average above freezing throughout the year because of the Gulf Stream. As a result of the moderation and the northerly latitude, summers normally hover around 12 °C (54 °F). Average temperatures are 5 °C (41 °F) in winter.[9] The northerly latitude also results in perpetual civil twilight during summer nights and very short winter days.

Between 1035 and 1814 the Faroes were part of the Kingdom of Norway, which was in a personal union with Denmark from 1450. In 1814 the Treaty of Kiel transferred Norway to the king of Sweden, on the winning side of the Napoleonic wars, whereas the king of Denmark, on the losing side, retained the Faroes, along with the two other historical Norwegian island possessions in the North Atlantic: Greenland and Iceland. The Faroe Islands have been a self-governing part of the Kingdom of Denmark since 1948.[10]

The Faroese control most of their domestic affairs. Those that remain the responsibility of Denmark include military defence, policing and the justice department, currency, and foreign affairs.[11] However, as they are not part of the same customs area as Denmark, the Faroe Islands have an independent trade policy and can establish trade agreements with other states. The islands also have representation in the Nordic Council as members of the Danish delegation. The Faroe Islands have their own national teams competing in certain sports.

Top 10 Faroe Islands Cities By Population

The Faroe Islands is an archipelago and a self-governing territory of Denmark, with a total of 18 islands, of which 17 are inhabited. Although the Faroe Islands have settlements and villages spread across the archipelago, it does not have cities in the traditional sense. The largest settlement is Tórshavn, which is also the capital city of the Faroe Islands. Other major settlements include Klaksvík, Runavík, Tvøroyri, Fuglafjørður, Vágur, and Sørvágur.

Therefore, it is not appropriate to provide a top 10 list of cities in the Faroe Islands. Instead, I can provide you with a list of the largest settlements based on population:

Walking in Torshavn , Faroe Islands capital

As one of the smallest capitals in the world, everything in Tórshavn is easy. Forget traffic-clogged highways, forget crowds of people, forget fighting for a seat on the bus. Here, we live life as it should be lived.

With plenty of space and clean, fresh air, there’s a real sense of well-being in the Faroese capital. This is the sort of place where people still have time for each other, where people are concerned about each other and where life moves at a civilised pace

The Faroe Islands: The 4K Destination

The Faroe Islands are made up of 18 volcanic islands and have a total population of around 50,000.
With its multi-coloured homes, exquisitely shaped lush wooden churches, and wildlands, the Faroe Islands is a scenic paradise. For adventurers lovers, there are the archipelago's steep cliffs, hiking trails, waterfalls, and rocky coastlines, and more than enough sites. For music lovers, the region is recognized for its festival scene, that hosts five music festivals each year.

The Faroe Islands are an archipelago located between the Norwegian Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, in the middle between Norway and Iceland (politically part of Denmark). If you love breathtaking landscapes and to run away from the crowds, this is the right place for you. A wild and rough destination with steep landscapes to fall in love with nature.

Despite our attempt at keeping our documentaries as authentic as possible, you are still watching a highlight reel. When editing, we naturally tend to choose the most exciting video clips. What you don’t see are the moments spent driving through less spectacular landscapes or some of the challenges we faced. Please always keep that in mind when watching!

Grindadráp
An extremely controversial topic that is closely tied to the Faroe Islands is the traditional Grindadráp. In a nutshell, it is a mass killing of pilot whales, a species of dolphins. Every year, around 700 dolphins are killed in these hunts. As everything happens out in the open, with the shore waters literally turning red, these killings get a lot of international (media) attention.

Frankly, it is extremely tough to separate ‚right‘ from ‚wrong‘ here. In the past, this subsistence hunting technique was vital for the survival of the local inhabitants with the meat being equally distributed among all islanders. As such, the Grindadráp always had an important social aspect, as the local community worked jointly together. There is no doubt that the centuries of hardship, living on a remote, wind-tossed island group, have ingrained the advantages of this hunting technique into the collective mind of the Faroese.

From an outside perspective, killing pilot whales in such numbers seems utterly pointless and cruel, especially as, today, there are sufficient alternative food sources. At the same time, one could ask if there is a moral difference between killing pilot whales, a species of least concern, compared to seals, sharks, moose or deer? Or compared to cows, pigs or chickens held in factory farming, which are killed in the millions, away from the public eye.

No person regularly eating meat is in any position to morally judge the actions of the Faroese.

However, one thing that personally bothers us, is that these killings are defended by calling it a ‚tradition‘. In our opinion, traditions are nothing intrinsically positive. Slavery was once a tradition. Burning widows on a pyre was once a tradition. And female genital mutilation is still a horrible tradition today. Therefore, continuing these mass killings simply because they are a ‚tradition‘ is not a good enough reason. Some traditions are not worth keeping.

A day in Klaksvík, Faroe Islands

Nestled on the northern coast of the Faroe Islands, Klaksvík is a captivating town that encapsulates the rugged beauty and seafaring heritage of this remote North Atlantic archipelago. With its dramatic fjords, colorful houses dotting the hillsides, and a deep connection to the ocean, Klaksvík gives a unique and enchanting experience for visitors and residents alike.
Klaksvík's landscape is a striking blend of soaring mountains and deep, winding fjords. The town itself is perched on the edge of a sheltered inlet, surrounded by lush green hills that plunge into the sea. The sight of fishing boats gently rocking in the harbor against a backdrop of steep cliffs is a testament to Klaksvík's maritime heritage and stunning natural setting.

I enjoyed my time in this charming town and hope you will too. Thank you for watching and enjoy!

Klaksvik to Kalsoy, Faroe Islands ferry

On the north side of the island of Kalsoy lays the most beautiful place in the world: Kallur lighthouse.

But to get there, a ferry from Klaksvik is needed. And even if small, the boat trip is truly a fantastic experience.

59- Bordoy - Îles Féroé - Danemark | Découvre Klaksvik et Arnarfjordur

Dans ce vlog découvre avec moi Klaksvík et Arnarfjordur sur l’île de Bordoy des îles Féroé au Danemark
★ Discover with me Klaksvik in the Bordoy island of the Faroe Islands, Danemark

Faroe Islands | Winter

Winter days on The Faroe Islands ,in Tórshavn the capital of the Faroe Islands, and in the village Klaksvik
