Explore the Ruins of a Medieval East African Empire
Getting to the ruins of Kilwa Kisiwani in Tanzania, East Africa is no easy task. But the trek to the island is worth it; Kilwa Kisiwani (“isle of the fish”) was once one of the greatest cities of the Swahili culture. In the 10th century, it made its fortunes by trading the riches of the African interior: gold, ivory, timber, and other valuable treasures. Until the Portuguese showed up in the 16th century, Kilwa Kisiwani was a wealthy and powerful port.
Kilwa Kisiwani may be no more, but the standing ruins are spectacular. See the video for a glimpse of the stunning architecture left behind, including the Great Mosque, the oldest standing mosque on the East African coast. Learn more about the history of Kilwa Kisiwani here.

Coming from Dar Es Salaam by car we arrived in KILWA without any problem to spent one day at Kilwa. And we found a paradise treasure island in Tanzania (Kilwa Island)
We sleep by the sea, and wake up with the sound of the waves.
Kilwa is a great place to visit in Tanzania, the Island is full of energy.
The Kilwa Sultanate was a Medieval sultanate, centered at Kilwa (an island off modern-day Tanzania), whose authority, at its height, stretched over the entire length of the Swahili Coast. It was founded in the 10th century by Ali ibn al-Hassan Shirazi, a Persian prince of Shiraz.
Portuguese scout Pêro da Covilhã, disguised as an Arab merchant, had travelled the length of the Kilwa Sultanate in 1489-90, and visited the ports of Malindi, Kilwa and Sofala, and delivered his scouting report back to Lisbon, describing the condition of the Kilwa Sultanate in quite some detail. The first Portuguese ships, under Vasco da Gama, on their way to India, reached the sultanate in 1497. Gama made contact with the Kilwa vassals of Mozambique, Mombassa and Malindi, seeking to secure their cooperation as staging posts for the Portuguese India Armadas.
In 1500, the 2nd Portuguese India Armada, under Pedro Álvares Cabral, visited Kilwa itself, and attempted to negotiate a commercial and alliance treaty with Emir Ibrahim. But emir prevaricated and no agreement was reached.

Sailing to THE ANCIENT RUINS OF TANZANIA! After a few days surfing and exploring Mchinga Bay and village, we set sail north to the next anchorage on our list, Kiswere Harbour, where we are approached by a few locals and don't feel safe when one man climbs aboard SeaScape....
We leave that evening and sail to Kilwa Kisiwani, a UNESCO world heritage sight with ruins dating back to the 10th century!!

Kilwa Kisiwani is a community on an Indian Ocean island off the southern coast of present-day Tanzania in eastern Africa.Historically, it was the center of the Kilwa Sultanate, a medievalsultanate whose authority at its height in the 13th-15th centuriesstretched the entire length of the Swahili Coast. Kilwa Kisiwani hasbeen designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site along with thenearby stonetown Songo Mnara.
